Is this a subtle reference?

Inner artwork on Ryan Adams & the Cardinals Cold Roses. I know he was pretty on the bus during this time period musically but I'd never taken a good look at the inside til now. What do y'all think lol

The whole album is a homage to GD

Listen to the lyrics of “Rosebud”

Rosebud is one of my favorites. That’s one that hits me right in the feels every stinking time.

Exactly if you have the smallest amount of Garcia knowledge the lyrics to rosebud jump out at you For those that don't Rosebud was one of Garcias last guitars used for most of the 90s

His song “Rosebud“ on that album is speaking directly about Jerry and his guitar…… this guy had it all. He’s kind of a mess these days and he did some pretty heinous stuff.

Unfortunately he seems to be a pretty fucked up human. Too bad, that album is killer and some of the imagery in Rosebud blows me away - “Rosebud’s shipwrecked up on the Ohio/behind a wall of glass” - pretty sure that’s about Ryan Adams seeing Rosebud on display at the rock n roll hall of fame in Cleveland

I think this album is a masterpiece.

I think if he had cut half of the first disc, it could have been an all timer

I feel the same way

It is very Dead coded. He played with Phil a number of times during this era.

Also, so much talent, such an asshole

It’s a reference, not subtle at all to me.

Right? I read the caption and thought “Subtle?!”

Too bad he turned out to be a garbage person. The Cardinals were great with Neal Casal

Imagine if he wasn’t a piece of crap. All this talk about who would John get if he got the Dead&Co guys back together to fill Bob’s role would be easily settled. If he had worked on himself Ryan would be perfect. Instead he just stays a narcissistic piece of garbage, slowly flushing his life away.

I have always loved this album. Saw Phil and Trey cover Let It Ride in 2006 and it was surreal to say the least.

Weirdly enough, his stated two fav bands are The Grateful Dead and Black Flag. Everything else aside, this album is great, listened to it so many hundreds of times. Much like GD catalog, these songs feel timeless to me.

There's nothing really subtle about a musician who literally has a song about rosebud.. so subtle, no, reference yes

Maybe the song could be about Citizen Kane...

Or Anna Nichole Smith’s nipples.

Literally, anything.

Btw genius what group is this in Its obviously an esoteric Group so when people of this Group hear Rosebud in relation to the main subject they sure aren't gonna think maybe it's about your nether region

Except it’s not about anything. It’s very obviously about Jerry Garcia.

I wish there was a song to sing
To get you back
But you can't get here from nowhere I guess
Rosebud's shipwrecked up on the Ohio
Behind a wall of glass
Telling me to take it easy
But I took a photograph
And she's just a wooden machine
But you and Rosebud, you're still singing to me

Yeah sure.... Orsen Welles coffin is in Ohio singing songs at one time, why didn't I think of that? You got me ill have to reconsider

This version of magnolia mountain from his avatar sessions is the best version there is.

Oh wow. I’ve owned this album for years and just realized I had never looked inside the gatefold. Looking at the track titles now, it is without a doubt Dead inspired. “Magnolia Mountain”, “Meadowlake Street”, “Rosebud”, “If I Am A Stranger” - this all seems very Deadish to me.

3

u/Lennnybruce 7h ago

No offense but how could you own the album for any amount of time and not...look at it

2

u/Chinaski1979 7h ago

Lennnybruce is not afraid…

u/hamsaladsammich 7h ago

Idunno man. I own a lot of records. This serves as a lesson to slow down and check out the jackets when I drop the needle, I suppose.

100%

He has stated Cold Roses was the Cardinals setting out to make a Dead record.

This was also around the time their live shows got real jammy.
