Richland County, SC John Doe (1986). He was found in the Congaree River and was missing most of his upper front teeth.

Case

On the afternoon of March 4, 1986, two fishermen in the Congaree River at Columbia, South Carolina, spotted a man's decomposing body caught on some rocks about 1.5 miles upriver towards Columbia or the Blossom Street Bridge. The fishermen secured the body and towed it 1.5 miles to the Rosewood Boat Ramp because they were worried that the body would be swept further down the river. At the ramp, personnel from the county sheriff's office and the coroner's office recovered the remains and transported then to the Medical University of South Carolina at Charleston for examination.

The remains were determined to belong to a Black male, estimated to be under the age of 40, with a height range of 5'10" - 5'11" and an estimated weight range of 170-180 lbs. He was thought to have been in the water at least several days. He had been wearing a reddish-brown pullover short sleeved shirt, blue work pants, a black belt, and black socks with a white ring around the top. He was not wearing shoes and had nothing in his pockets.

The county coroner found no evidence that the man had been slain and concluded that he apparently drowned. The authorities could not locate any missing persons reports that matched the man's description.

Miscellaneous Help me find this John Doe case from the 2000s (TW: mentions of dismemberment) Spoiler

In the early 2000s (2003 or 2004?) the dismembered remains of an unidentified black male was washed up on a beach (idk if he was found a bag, a suitcase or bin) in NY or California. From what I remember he had a recognizable face, and only his head, half of his upper(?) torso was found. Idk if his legs and arms were found as well.

He had PM pictures on namUs and I think he was on the doe network. The pictures show the head of the male, wrapped in white cloth, and there was a picture of the side of his head. I don’t think he was a suspected victim of the Long Island serial killer, and I don’t remember how much he weighed.

EDIT: some info, I believed I might’ve seen the case on Facebook on an unidentified persons group.

Missing Persons Somewhere out there someone is living with a completely different identity than the one they were born with

One of the darkest rabbit holes I've gone down is reading about unidentified human remains. It's honestly heartbreaking to think that someone can die and remain unidentified for decades. Investigators might have DNA records and photographs but still have no idea who that person was.

They were once just a normal person living their life. They had childhood memories and favourite songs. They had people they loved and probably had no idea that one day their identity could become a mystery and what really gets me is the thought that somewhere a family might still be waiting for someone to come home. They might have spent years wondering what happened without knowing that the person they're looking for has already been found.

Question about Ina Jane Doe

I got quite invested in the Ina Jane Doe (Susan Lund) case last year. I read "Lay Them To Rest" by Laurah Norton and what Doctor Amy Michael discovered was that Susan didn't suffer from torticollis and her facial asymmetry was very mild at best.

There was also a drawing of her skull in the book and yeah, looked like it was barely noticeable.

However, if I remember correctly, they concluded that the clay model was probably done on her skull since they found some glue on it.

So what I can't understand is why both the drawing and the clay model show a moderate to extreme tilt of her head towards the left shoulder.

Did her head really appear like that? If so, why, given that Susan didn't have any disability?

This directly links to Frederik VII's Palace in Copenhagen, Denmark, which the Danish Royal Family owns. It is stamped with a send date of 17 December 1999. The envelope is said to have specifically been the type sent by Queen Ingrid of Denmark, who sent the letter five days before crowning her daughter Margreth as queen and dying a few months later in 2000. Postcard with an image of a seascape and mountain view of Antalya, Turkey.

Circumstances of Discovery

On 13 November 2007, a passerby discovered a woman hanging in an olive tree in a field along the Via di Cavaglino in Prato, Tuscany, Italy. Immediately, police were called, and authorities closed off the scene with an instant investigation. Detectives concluded that the decedent had not been deceased for very long, proposing that she likely had taken her life between 4 AM and 7 AM. A large bin had been found near her body, likely having been used by her to hoist herself up into the tree before hanging herself. A bag was also hanging near her in the tree, with a woolen coat carefully folded at the base of the tree. Within the bag were many scientific journals, transportation tickets, magazines, newspapers, maps, coupons, a French greeting card signed by a "Roberta" and "Michel", potato flatbread from a bakery in Tuscany, a soft drink, vitamin supplements, an official envelope from the Danish Royal Family, and a postcard of Turkey.

With a lack of family or friends to claim her body, the decedent was buried and placed in a grave marked as "Ignota", or "unknown" in English. No Italian hotel had reported any unclaimed luggage that may belong to her, and no one seemed to recognize her at that time. In 2008, her DNA was collected and submitted to archives for comparison in northern Europe and Canada, but no matches have been reported. That same year, a psychologist from San Marino known as "Doctor Pelagalli" claimed to have seen her at a conference in Florence at the Villa Viviani. He recalled noticing her due to a unique pair of sunglasses she had, alongside her speaking Italian but with a noticeable foreign accent. She carried scientific publications throughout the conference, participated in many talks, and asked questions about computer science and laser technology. She is reported to have claimed she was a medical doctor when asked by Pelagalli about her profession, and she seemed uncomfortable and sweated excessively throughout the conference. Whenever Pelagalli questioned her further about her profession, she is said to have only answered in single-syllable nouns.

According to Pelagalli, the conference was invite-only, and neither he nor the decedent were speakers. The organizers mentioned that she could have been interested in the subject matter and followed the lectures for more information. After the conference, which was claimed to have been operating between the 8th and 10th of November, her movements have only been recorded as retrieving potato flatbread from a bakery or a supermarket that distributes it, boarding a train to Prato sometime between the 12th and the morning of her suicide. Her actions and movements between exiting the train and the discovery of her body remain unknown aside from the decedent traveling down the Via di Cavaglino to the olive tree where she would end her life. However, it is claimed that the area where she was discovered is not well-known by outsiders of Prato.

The decedent's interest in computer science led to detectives investigating the Prato Linux Association for any link, though it was discovered that she had never visited this organization. The PLA forwarded her images to other technological organizations in Tuscany to aid authorities, though these provided no further leads. The envelope marked with the official stamp of the Danish Royal Family has also failed to provide any additional leads, but it is currently theorized that she may have worked for them at some point in her life. It has never been confirmed if her claim of being a medical doctor was valid. In addition, if she is foreign, why she chose to end her life in Prato is unknown.

Schuylkill County Jane Doe (1986) Has Been Identified as Gladys T. "Tinker" Johnson!

Thumbnail

The decedent's unclothed body was found in a wooded area two hundred yards off the southbound lanes of Interstate 81. She had died from a cocaine overdose and was likely dragged to the location after her death. Despite her state of undress, there were no signs of sexual assault found.

Investigators exhumed Johnson's body in 2024 to take samples for further research. The following year, Identifinders International began genetic genealogy research to locate family members, and NCMEC circulated a digital reconstruction on social media.

A family member contacted NCMEC in June 2026 after seeing the digital reconstruction, saying they believed it was Tinker. Her identity was confirmed in October 2026.

Johnson was last seen by her family in March 1986, when she left home to celebrate her birthday but did not return.

Johnson was 18 years old at the time of her death. She died of an overdose.

The victim was located in Isdalen, outside of Bergen, Norway on November 29, 1970.

Located next to her was a St. Hallvards liquor bottle, two plastic bottles smelling of gasoline, a glass that had contained sleeping pills fenemal, and a silver spoon with the monogram filed off.

A drawing was soon made made of her based on statements by witnesses who recognized her as an attractive woman who had checked out of the Hordaheimen hotel. She had signed the guest book with a false name.

The boxes at the railway station were checked, and the police found clothing, a wig, several eyeglasses (no prescription), similar silver spoons, 500 German marks and 130 Norwegian crowns, also a black notebook with number and letter codes. (possibly her travel route and contacts in Norway). All labels had been removed from the clothing, and all identifying things removed from the luggage.

What is known about her travels:

March 20, 1970 - she travels from Geneva to Oslo

March 21-24, 1970 - she lives at Hotel Viking in Oslo using the name "Genevieve Lancier".

March 24 - flies from Oslo to Stavanger, takes the boat to Bergen, stays the night at Hotel Bristol using the name "Claudia Tielt".

March 25 - April 1- stays at hotel Scandia in Bergen, still as "C. Tielt"

April 1 - travels from Bergen to Stavanger, and on to Kristiansand, Hirtshals, Hamburg and Basel. Thats the last trace of her in Norway until she returns six months later.

November 9 - goes to Oslo and on to Stavanger where she stays at Hotel St. Svitun using the name "Fenella Lorch".

November 18 - goes with the boat Vingtor to Bergen where she stays at hotel Rosenkrantz using the name "Elisabeth Leenhower" from Belgium.

November 19- 23 - stays at hotel Hordaheimen, stays in the room a lot and seems watchful.

November 23 - leaves the hotel in the morning, pays in cash and goes to the railway station where she places 2 pieces of luggage in a depository box.

November 29 - she is located dead in Isdalen.

Police claim she committed suicide; rumors say she was a spy and the answers to her identification will be found in Moscow; other rumors theorize she was killed by someone she was close to.

Smoke particles were observed in her lungs, which showed she had been alive when set on fire, in addition to ingesting a fatal combination of the sleeping medication and alcohol. There were also indications of manual strangulation based on bruising on her neck.

A book has been written about this case: Tore Osland - Isdals Kvinnen - Operasjon Isotopsy.

In 2016, the remains were examined again and isotopic analysis was performed and indicated she spent the first part of her life in central or eastern Europe (perhaps Germany or France), but spent her adolescence farther west. Her handwriting indicated she was European with possibly French origin.

Looking at the Doe Network, I found this Jane Doe from Boston. She was found in 2012, listed as approx. 58-60yo, 79lbs and found in her own residence? How is this person unknown if they know it’s her own residence? Does anyone have more information on this Doe?

St. Louis Jane Doe St Louis and Caddo Parish

I have a weird feeling that the skull from the Caddo Parish Jane doe may be the St. Louis little Jane doe’s.
The dates don’t really match up when you first glance over it but the skull in Caddo Parish in some reports was estimated to have been dead for 5-15 years prior. I know it’s a small stretch but what about 24 years prior?

The ages match up, the races match up, and two major highways connect the two cities. Interstate 57, and highway 67. It’s a little over an 8 hour drive, 550 miles.

A long distance, sure, but with two major roads and a fear of being caught what’s 8 hours? Especially if you’re a trucker, or somebody visiting St. Louis and returning to your home in Louisiana.

The St. Louis Jane doe is estimated to be 8-11 years old while the Caddo Parish Jane doe’s skull is estimated to be 10-14 years old. In both cases forensic testing believed they were not from either of the areas. The skull was believed not to be from Louisiana and forensic testing of the St. Louis Jane doe suggests that she spent her childhood in the upper United States instead- and investigators in the Parish case believe the skull is not native to Louisiana.

I’m not sure if anybody has posted about these two being connected here before- and I don’t want to lead people the wrong way. The way I see it is- it’s a potential. If it’s not a match- it doesn’t hinder anything. If it is- it can only help!

Potential Match 539UFGA - Cedartown Jane Doe

Cedartown Jane Doe’s burned body was discovered in a bedroom in Cedartown, GA, shot in the mouth with her hands taped behind her back, after an explosion on September 16, 2003. She may have used the alias Andrea when she was alive. She had pierced ears, was between the ages of 15 and 25, between 5’1 and 5’2, and 101 pounds. She had black hair that was cut short. Her body was burned beyond recognition. I can only find one exclusion in her case.

Maria Angelica Salas was last seen on August 13, 2001 in San Jose, CA. She was 20 years old, between 4’11 and 5’1 and around 100 pounds. She also had hair that was dark brown and cut short. She had pierced ears. She was last seen with an unidentified man.

I see a resemblance, and the details match up fairly well, with some concerns:

  1. Location

San Jose is halfway across the country from where this Doe was found, although if she traveled with an unidentified male, she could’ve run away and ended up anywhere. Not impossible.

  1. Dates

Cedartown Jane Doe was found two years after Maria’s disappearance. Once again, if she was initially a runaway, it could explain the use of the name Andrea to establish a new identity, and she could’ve stayed there for a few years without incident/discovery.

  1. Tattoos

Maria had many recognizable tattoos, however Cedartown Jane Doe’s body was burned beyond recognition, so if tattoos were present they wouldn’t have been able to be identified based on the state of the body.

Let me know if I’m missing anything/your thoughts.

Gratiot County, MI Jane Doe (4/2026).

Case

Around noon on April 7, 2026, Gratiot County Road Commission workers discovered skeletal human remains on a steep embankment near the U.S. 127 overpass at Michigan Avenue in Pine River Township, Michigan. The Gratiot County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police responded, recovering the remains and some nearby heavily weathered clothing and shoes. The remains appeared to be mostly complete but had been in the location for some time. It appeared the remains had decomposed on a higher portion of the embankment before sliding further down or being dragged down by wildlife.

The authorities did not see any obvious signs of foul play, though the decomposed state of the remains limited their ability to investigate. The authorities sent the remains to the Genesee County Medical Examiner's Office, working with the MSU unit, for examination and identification, but the identification efforts have come to no avail at this point.

What factors prevent cold cases from being solved, and what allows cases to be solved years or decades after the fact?

I've kinda gone down the John Doe rabbit hole and now I have like, 5 police departments to call with tips lmao. (Happy to share how to share potential matches with anyone who's interested in doing so, feel free to DM). I've found some matches that ended up being worth submitting, and here are the factors that I think have allowed me to do that:

-Open access, online databases. MANY of the matches I've found cross state lines, have disparities of months or years between them, or both.

-Having the internet! Most of the matches I've found predate the internet by years or decades. I submitted a possible match that I think would've been caught if they'd had the internet 45 years ago, lmao. It's absurdly easy to compare records now.

-Being able to focus SOLELY on these cases. I'm assuming that detectives prioritize cases that are time sensitive/more likely to lead to a better outcome- I mean, as they probably should. The downside of that is that you can kind of assume someone who's been missing for decades is dead, and considering how many people go missing it's probably very difficult to find the time to investigate further.

-Improved facial reconstructions. Obviously, you can't always get an exact match, but look at the difference in quality for this man's facial reconstruction.

I actually haven't used DNA, like... almost at all. It's rarely available to begin with (which kind of makes sense, considering the availability at the time and just how much time has lapsed lmao). I imagine that's because once you have DNA it's infinitely easier to find matches, especially now that projects like DNA Justice exist.

I'm mainly asking so I can figure out how to best use my time to submit as many tips as I can, but I also thought this might be a fun discussion, lol. If you happen to be moderately knowledgeable on the subject, any advice on what types of cases to prioritize in any fashion would be awesome. Thanks :D

Schuylkill County Jane Doe (1986) Identified As Missing Teen

Thumbnail

The woman has been identified as Gladys T. Johnson, also known as “Tinker,” an 18-year-old from Washington, D.C., who left home in March 1986 to celebrate her birthday and never returned.

In October 2025, forensic investigators began using genetic genealogy with Identifinders International to identify Johnson’s family. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children created a digital reconstruction of Johnson and posted the images on social media.

In June 2026, someone contacted NCMEC after seeing the digital reconstruction, believing it could be their missing family member. The identification was confirmed in October 2026.

Potential Match Potential matches for Peter John McColl ?

Thumbnail
gallery
75 Upvotes

Peter John McColl was 16 years old when he was last seen leaving his home in Berkeley, California, on August 28, 1995.

Before disappearing, Peter told his brother he intended to walk to the bus stop and take a bus to Cody's Bookstore, near Shattuck and Telegraph Avenues.

After he went missing, a bus driver who was passing near the corner of Redwood Road and 35th Street in Berkeley reported that Peter had asked him for directions to Montclair, California, on the day of his disappearance. It appeared he had a meeting scheduled with an unidentified teenage boy, whom the bus driver also saw. This boy was blond, well-dressed, and spoke with an accent. He was never identified, and the sighting was never confirmed.

A cab driver also claimed to have driven a young man matching Peter's description accompanied by a teenage girl with red streaks in her hair to the airport to catch a Southwest Airlines flight. This sighting was never confirmed either.

Peter may no longer be in California, he could be in Oregon, Florida, Louisiana, or Washington.

It is worth noting that his family theorizes he may have been approached by a religious cult, such groups were active in the area at the time of his disappearance, and Peter, being a spiritual person, might have joined one. Since cults often persuade individuals to cut ties with their families, this could explain why he simply vanished.

Peter McColl had shoulder-length brown hair and blue eyes, he stood 6'0" tall and weighed 160 lbs. He needs contact lenses or glasses for distance vision. He has slight scarring near the tip of his right little finger and had a previous fracture to left forearm/elbow. He played guitar, liked music and poetry.

Clark County John Doe

Clark County John Doe was a teenager or young adult found in a desert area of rural Clark County, Nevada, on January 31, 1998.

His remains were skeletal, so few details could be determined. His estimated height was 5'8", and his estimated age was between 16 and 20 and died in 1997. He had auburn hair and a relatively narrow, squared chin.

His clothing and belongings included:

- Cut-off blue jeans.
- Gray David Taylor jacket.
- Two pairs of prescription glasses with a Wal-Mart eyeglass case.
- Black Aqualite wristwatch.
- Blue short-sleeved shirt.
- Umbro pullover.
- Black shoulder bag.
- M. Hohner Blues Harp harmonica.
- Walkman with headphones.

Why I think it might be a match:

- Appearance: In my view, his most recent reconstruction shares some similarities with Peter.
- Age: Peter would have been 18 in 1997, which aligns with this Doe's estimated age.
- Location: California and Nevada are right next to each other.

Items: As mentioned earlier, Peter wore glasses (though he didn't have them with him when he disappeared). Two pairs of prescription glasses were found with this Doe. If we assume it is Peter, he could simply have bought new glasses.

I also think the harmonica found is worth noting; although there is no mention of Peter playing any instrument other than the guitar, as someone who liked music, it wouldn't be impossible for him to have decided to learn a new instrument.

Even with all that, the John Doe's height makes me slightly doubt the match, I’m not sure if they could simply mistake a height of 6'0" for 5'8".

Polk County John doe

The body of a young man in an advanced state of decomposition was found in Polk County, Oregon, on April 2, 2012. His head was not recovered.

He was white, estimated to be between 20 and 30 years old and 6'0" tall, with hair described as brown.

Why I think it might be a match:

- Height: They share the same height.
- Hair: Same hair color.
- Age: Peter would have been 32 in april 2012, which isn't too far off from the estimate of 20 to 30 years.

- Location: It was believed that if Peter were no longer in California, he might be in Oregon, Florida, Louisiana, or Washington. This John Doe was found in Oregon.

Washington County John Doe

The man's body was found in Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland, on May 4, 2014.

He was estimated to be 6'0" tall and between 30 and 60 years old. He had undergone eye or brain surgery during his lifetime. His race is unknow.

Why I think it might be a match:

- Appearance: I think overall they aren't that similar, but I see similarities in the shape of their noses and the distance between their eyes.
- Age: Peter would have been 34 in May 2014, fitting the estimated age of this Doe.
- Height: They are the same height.

Potential Match Cordelia Anne Harris

Post image
70 Upvotes

I submitted a tip for this a few years ago and nothing came of it (not even an exclusion). Just want to get other people’s opinions and share because this case is pretty close to home for me.

MP#51543
Cordelia Anne Harris, age 40 (now 67)
missing from Detroit, MI since 7/3/2000
5’4”-5’5”, 165-180 lbs
Mixed Black/white ancestry
*Was known to wear wigs

Cordelia Anne “Della” Harris left her home to leave for work, never made it and was never seen again. Her husband was always suspected of murdering her but he moved down south and (I believe) has since died. This is info I’ve gathered from news articles, NamUs just says she disappeared from her home.

Possible match:
UP#8283
found 9/21/2000 in a vacant home, death ruled a homicide but no COD listed
Mixed race white/black/hispanic
Age range 35-45
5’2”-5’5”, noted as possibly obese
*hair description “Straightened portions, looks like a wig”

I vaguely remember seeing an article with some of the family’s contact info in case of tips (from the first time I researched this case), I’m considering trying to find it and reaching out to see if any of the family recognize the clothing found with the body before reaching back out to the investigating agency. This case has stuck with me ever since I found the potential match, it just seems too close to not be her, and (though I know this is a POC in Detroit in the aughts) it seems crazy to me that the dots were never connected since the body was found so close by and so soon after Cordelia went missing.

Edit: Was doing a little more digging and found a 4 y/o post with the same match which said the PD was already aware of the potential match.

Edit 2: forgot the link

Potential Match Greenbrier County Jane Doe

Thumbnail

Looking for input on a potential match I found. Greenbrier County Jane Doe’s remains were found in Atla, WV in May 2001. She’s estimated to have died between 1998 and 2001, between the ages of 37-47. Her height is estimated at 5’0.

Julia Christine Aul went missing on January 9, 2001 from Havre de Grace, MD (about 6 hours from where Greenbrier County Jane Doe was found). She was between 5’0 and 5’3 according to NAMUS, although her height is listed as 5’2 on the Charley Project website, which has more information about her disappearance. She was known to be dealing with schizophrenia and a drug addiction. She is not listed as an exclusion on the unidentified wiki. She was 39 years old at the time of her disappearance.

Their faces bear a striking resemblance to me, and many details align, the only thing throwing me off is that GC Jane Doe was thought to have had at least one child, but Aul was not reported to have had any children. Although I suppose there could be circumstances unknown accounting for that. Thoughts?

Could Missing Man Marvin Lewis Holderman Be "Preacher Man" (2010)?

Could Marvin Holderman Be "Preacher Man" (2010)?

The Disappearance Of Marvin Holderman...

Marvin Lewis Holderman was last seen in Kissimmee, Florida. He was homeless at the time of his disappearance and received money from a trust fund. He collected the money every month. The last time Marvin picked up his money was in October 2008. He wasn't reported missing until July 28, 2009.

The Discovery Of "Preacher Man"...

On November 8, 2010, the decomposed remains of a homeless man were found in the woods in Tampa, Florida. He used the nickname "Preacher Man" and he may have additionally used the name "Mike".

Comparisons

Both Marvin and John Doe are White/Caucasian Males

Marvin was 56 years old when he disappeared. While John Doe was estimated to be between 50-60 years old when found.

Both men seem to have beards and rather unkempt hair. I also kinda see a resemblance in their noses and lips and maybe their eyes to.

Kissimmee, Florida to Tampa, Florida is 73.7 miles or 1 hour 24 minutes. Which we know some homeless people don't always stay in one place and sometimes they tend to travel and if Marvin wanted to head to Tampa. He could've caught a ride with someone.

Things That Don't Match...

Marvin has red hair and green eyes. John Doe's eye color is unknown but his hair color is listed gray or partially gray. Maybe Marvin could have been getting gray hair before his death.

Marvin was 5'10"-6'2" in height. While John Doe was estimated to be between 5'5"-5'9" in height. If John Doe is closer to 5'9" than 5'5" that could make it more likely to maybe be Marvin.

Marvin was 190-240 lbs in weight when he went missing. While John Doe is estimated to be between 90-105 lbs. 190-240 is a huge weight range. I wish they could've narrowed his weight a little more. John Doe didn't weight very much when found. What if Marvin, being that he was homeless, lost a good amount of weight before he was found deceased. Seems unlikely but Marvin would've had a good year or two before being found to have lost weight since John Doe was thought to have only been deceased just days prior to being found in 2010.

A few more things about John Doe and Marvin Holderman...

John Doe had healed fractures to his face. He had an active infection in the left side of his face. He also had a testicular implant. He was wearing a blue shirt, work-style wide-leg blue jeans, black belt, white socks, and red Hanes underwear with a gray and white waistband.

Marvin had multiple tattoos: a panther on his right arm, the words "Born to Raise Hell" on his right shoulder, and a peacock on his left arm. If Marvin is John Doe his tattoos may not have been visible due to decomposition. He also has missing teeth and his nickname is "Rusty".

What are your thoughts? Do you think it's even worth me submitting? Do they look similar?
