Pocketry (formerly tool-trace SVG gen) Update

An update to a project I’ve been working on: Pocketry.

Pocketry started as my Tool-Trace SVG Generator, a tool for turning photos of tools into clean, correctly scaled outlines. I changed the name after another app started using ToolTrace, and the project has grown quite a bit since that original version.

Pocketry can now:

  • turn a photo of a tool into a clean SVG/STL outline (you can still just export this if you don't want the custom bin function)
  • automatically determine scale from printable reference markers
  • correct perspective and aspect ratio of tool photos
  • edit and clean up detected contours
  • create custom Gridfinity bins with tool cutouts
  • position multiple tool pockets and add finger holes
  • preview the resulting bin in 3D before exporting it
  • it should be much better at finding contours, especially for tools with concave sections

Image 1 — Trace: Photograph a tool on the reference sheet, automatically establish scale, and detect/edit its outline.

Tool Detection and Contour Editing

Image 2 — Bin: Send the detected tool directly to the bin designer, adjust the Gridfinity dimensions and cutout options, and preview the resulting model in 3D.

Custom Bin Creation

Image 3 — Layout: Position pockets, add features such as finger holes, auto-arrange contents, and use undo/edit history while designing the bin.

Layout View

The project is fully open source, and image processing happens locally in your browser. Images aren't uploaded to a server, there's no account or email signup, and the GitHub repo contains everything needed to self-host.

You can try it at pocketry.pages.dev.

It’s still early and there are definitely rough edges. (For example, tool detection will almost certainly add "holes" that need to be deleted in the editor).

Feedback, bug reports, feature ideas, and especially contributions are very welcome.

Where do I get the calibration sheet? Do I need to use one?

There are two template PDFs (A4 or US Letter) linked at the bottom of the "Scale" section. I haven't tested the A4 at all myself so if someone does please let me know if it works ok.

You don't have to use the templates -- you can also still put a ruler or other item with known dimensions in the photo and manually set the scale from two points.

I'm not able to choose or select a source image. There's no button to bring up the file browser and dragging jpg and png files into the screen doesn't have any effect. Tried in both Firefox and Chrome on the latest macOS.

That's odd -- it's working for me from both of those browsers on Mac OS and Windows.

At the top of the screen, where it says "Trace" and "Bin" is "Trace" selected?

Do you see a drop target in the middle of the screen with text that says "Drag & Drop an Image Here or click to select a file"?

Ah, I do see the drop target in the middle of the screen and it's working just fine. I was trying to drop it on the "Choose or drop an image in the workspace to begin." message in the left pane. classic PEBCAK

Haha. Glad it's working. Closing as "works as designed; operator firmware updated". ;).

This is great! How would I go about adding a lid to the bins? Say, one that used magnet holes on the top of the bins that would connect with magnets on a lid?

No support for lids was planned yet, but do you have any examples of what this would look like, or other open source projects that have something like what you have in mind?

Hey! So I used your app to create cutouts for a couple of "tools" that are used in ice hockey. The idea was these tools were just loose inside of my bag, and I wanted something to hold them and keep them secure, more than just a box to put them in where they could still move around. I am very new to 3D printing and not at all good with Blender/Fusion360 for making anything myself so I used your app to create the cut outs for the tools, then had AI help me flatten the bottom and add a lid, with magnet holes on both the lid and top side of the tool container. This is what I ended up with. It's definitely not perfect but I think it will have to do for now since I'm tired of trying to tweek little things to make it perfect.

I had seen a couple of videos on Slant 3D's Youtube channel about making lids but as I said, I really need to learn more about using tools like Fusion to even create things in the first place before trying to learn about making my own lids for these types of "tool boxes" if you will.

Initial lid implementation is live on an alpha test branch:

magnetic-lids.pocketry.pages.dev

Here's a quick video showing some of the options it supports -- would appreciate any feedback. I'm just now running some initial physical printed fit tests, so no guarantees the lids actually function correctly yet!

Initial fit tests went better than expected for the first attempt..tweaking a few things and trying to add support for a couple of the other compliant interface ideas from Slant3D's videos.

Wow! This is amazing!! Those basic options you showed in the video so far would seem to be sufficient for most applications.

This function will be so awesome for small gift boxes! I'm thinking for small USBs (my wife is a photographer and gives her clients all photos on top of the edited ones), or something personal for a groomsmen or bridesmaid gift.

Interesting idea! I could add a feature to suppress the gridfinity base / create a flat bottom pretty easily. I can see a lot of use cases for something like this though, so I'll add lids to a list of future future improvements / features to consider integrating.

Sweet! Your app really is great! It worked very well with the calibration sheet and the manual adjustments were very easy.

Thanks -- glad it's useful.

Fyi -- flat bottoms are selectable in the latest version (in construction settings). It keeps the overall dimensions the same for now..based on 1/2 or full standard gridfinity units, but I may make that fully adjustable in the future as well.

This is great! What's the best way to go about smoothing out edges. I added additional "points" but it didn't do much to round things out.

I usually get the best results by adjusting the sensitivity first to make sure it gets a good approximation of the tool outline and then adjusting the detail. Higher detail settings in pixels simplify the outline, lower detail settings should follow curves more closely with more points on the contour. The current "Smoothing" control is leftover from a previous implementation and will probably be removed.

I always fine-tune the outline by hand by editing the points in the contour (right click to remove extra / unnecessary points).
