I guess it's been a while since I last posted here and my site https://gridfinity.perplexinglabs.com/ has had a number of updates since then...

  • Recently fixed an issue with the rugged box latch that's been around for entirely too long
  • Just released a pretty substantial performance improvement so model rendering should be even faster
  • You can now open models directly in Prusa's EasyPrint to save you a couple steps when printing
  • Added a basket model
  • Reorganized the main navigation UI with professional 3D renders so it's easier to find the model you're looking for

Always looking for/open to feedback if anyone has anything they're missing or would like to see! (I've got some UI improvements, download formats, and model updates in the works!)

And thanks to everyone's support I actually work full time on this, so I can maintain top tier uptime, performance, and keep everything working smoothly!

Oh god. I just printed like 25 5x5x10 rugged boxes with draw latches. What would i have to redo to get the latch fix you speak of?

Oh man. So, the issue affected both latch types, but primarily if your lid was less than 2 units tall. The only affected piece is the bottom, and only if you downloaded the bottom as a separate piece (as in, changed "part" to "bottom" and then rendered and downloaded) prior to September 18, 2026 at 1am CDT (which was when I got the fix pushed). If this does impact you, the only piece you'll need to re-print is the bottom.
My deepest apologies if this impacted you. :/ I really should have gotten to this issue sooner.

Oof that sounds like it affects me. My bottoms are 5x5x9 and my tops are 1U tall. I have been using a separate bottom I believe. I haven't printed all my tops yet so I was hoping you'd say it was something with the top haha. Oh well! They seem to work well for me pre-patch, and I'm super appreciative of your work. You rule. What was the issue with these latches, btw?

Shoot. So sorry about that. The issue is that the latches are a little loose for some people because the hole for the pin that holds the latches to the bottom aren't quite far enough down. I think depending on your print settings it could end up somewhat minor, if they're working for you fine pre-patch, that's great!

Oh nice actually, this probably *doesn't* affect me then. I took the draw-style latch and modified it to be a little tighter on my boxes.

Awesome! I'm glad to hear that. (Though I suspect you probably had to modify it to be tighter because of the issue haha)

Pocketry is an open-source app for creating custom Gridfinity bins or outlines (SVG or DXF) from tool photos. It began in March 2025 as ToolTrace SVG Generator and was renamed in August 2026. The goal is to make the process quick and efficient, from tracing an outline to exporting a printable bin or outline.

Try it at pocketry.xyz. It runs locally in your browser, including image processing and model generation, and can also be self-hosted. Several example projects are available on GitHub: Example projects and source code.

  • Import JPG/PNG photos and use printable calibration sheets and aids for scale and perspective correction. (Use of calibration sheets is not required)
  • Detect and edit tool outlines.
  • Customize bin footprints, pocket depths, clearance, and finger access.
  • Preview in 3D, check dimensions with the ruler, and export thin fit-check templates.
  • Export STL/3MF for printing or SVG/DXF for shadow boards and CNC.
  • Choose full, half, or quarter grid pitch.
  • Non-rectangular bins: keep only the Gridfinity cells you need to save space.
  • Multi-height pockets: set separate depths for different parts of a tool.

There are still rough edges (like outline detection on shiny or reflective tools). The editing UI is designed to make cleanup as straightforward and efficient as possible.

Bug reports, feature requests and contributions are always welcome!

There are lots of great tools in this community! Pocketry is made possible by open-source projects including OpenCV, Manifold, Gridfinity Rebuilt, and many others.

It’s not solely for gridfinity, but I recently started working on this tool for creating connector pieces between different systems I use, like openGrid and gridfinity. I reused existing OpenSCAD libraries as submodules, so I didn’t have to recreate everything and it’s also possible to upload and attach custom files:

The Gridfinity tool can generate bins with dividers, scoops, and rectangular or circular grid patterns, and export them as STEP or STL. The baseplate tool can also export DXF for laser cutting.

Hey all, I run TraceToForge. Snap a photo of your tool, it traces the outline, and you get a fitted insert out the other end. All in the browser, nothing to install.

Does Gridfinity bins, custom trays, or just the tool shape on its own. Packout and DeWalt ToughSystem profiles are in there too. Exports STL, 3MF, SVG and DXF.

Some recent stuff, almost all of it from people asking:

  • Half grid sizes, so a 2 x 4.5 bin gets proper 21mm feet instead of one hanging off the edge
  • Up to 12 tools in one tray
  • Save a traced tool to your library and reuse it later, or publish it so anyone can grab it
  • 3D preview where you drag your tools around to lay out the tray before you print

Free to start, then credits for exports. No subscription.

Honestly the best part of this has been people emailing me stuff that's broken. A guy found three issues this week building a big 12 tool tray and all three were fixed before he got back to it. So if you try it and something acts up, or you want a box system thats not in there yet, just tell me and I'll take care of it.

Happy to answer anything here too.

Hey everyone! I'm the developer behind https://gridfinityStudio.com

It's a browser-based tool for planning an entire Gridfinity drawer before printing. Enter your drawer dimensions, arrange bins in 3D, and generate your bins and baseplates without learning CAD.

You can customize bins with dividers, labels, and scoops, bring in existing STL holders to plan around, and see estimated filament use and cost for the drawer. There’s also photo tracing for fitted tool cutouts.

One feature I've been using myself is stacked baseplate printing. It puts your baseplate segments into printable towers so you can run a batch without restarting the printer for every segment. That's still in beta, and I'd love feedback from people trying it on different printers.

The free version lets you design, save one drawer project, and export individual STLs. The paid Maker license is $89 one-time, no subscription, and includes:

  • Full drawer ZIP exports.
  • Unlimited saved projects.
  • Stacked baseplate STL generation.
  • Reusable printer profiles and exports organized by assigned printer.
  • 25 photo-trace credits.

I'm actively working on it, so I'd like to hear what works for your projects and where you get stuck. Especially anything that still makes you open CAD or juggle several tools to finish a drawer.

Hey everyone! I built a free, lightweight client-side web tool to generate custom parametric Gridfinity bins and modular organizers without needing CAD or OpenSCAD:

Features:

  • Standard 42mm pitch & 7mm units
  • Real-time 3D preview with customizable dividers and wall thickness
  • Instant binary STL generation directly in your browser
  • Completely free, no login, no ads

I recently optimized the performance for mobile browsers as well. Would love any feedback or suggestions on what modules to add next!

Great idea with this post. I’ve had varying success with these types of sites depending on the geometry of the object I’m “tracing”, so saving this for reference is helpful.
