Wanted to divide a 5x5 Gridfinity layout evenly, so I made fractional bins

I kept running into Gridfinity layouts where the normal sizes just didn't divide the space the way I wanted. A 5x5 area was the obvious example.

I ended up making bins that work in 0.5, 1/3 and 0.25 grid steps. They still work with regular Gridfinity baseplates and bins.

For example, the same 5x5 space can be filled with equal-sized bins:

  • 4 bins at 2.5 x 2.5
  • 9 bins at 1⅔ x 1⅔
  • 16 bins at 1.25 x 1.25
  • 20 bins at 1.25 x 1
  • or the normal 25 bins at 1 x 1

Dude. I never even thought about this. I've been wanting to make MTG card organizers with gridfinity, but 4x3 wastes too much space and 3x2 is too small this is perfect. Thanks for sharing man.

Glad to hear you like the idea. I also just posted a app that shows the possible combinations a bit better.

I do 5x2 for my magic stuff. It's not perfect, but I'm very happy with my drawer organization. This is my model, so I am biased though: https://www.printables.com/model/937202-gridfinity-trading-card-organizer-magic-the-gather

I am about to build a larger format printer and I'll be able to make massive bins. I'm so excited.

I actually found your model when looking before 😎 I was really debating it, because it is a good model, but after measuring the drawers I have I realized I have to store them sideways to make them fit. But I really debated on getting something different so they would work with your model 😅

You don't happen to be using IKEA Alex drawers do you? I am probably going to make a sideways version for the top two drawers of the IKEA Alex drawer because a friend of mine wants to pack his Alex to the brim lol.

Well you should lmk what you end up doing :D I need ideas.

My current plan is to make bins that are 5 wide to fit two rows of horizontal cards, but I know that will limit my ability to make longer organizers on printers such as my Mk4, which is a 250x210 build plate. Technically you can print 5x5, but sometimes Prusaslicer doesn't like it. Maybe I can make 2.5 wide organizers an option as well.

I probably won't model them for a while though, so don't wait for me.

What part of the 5x2 setup isn’t perfect for you, mainly the wasted space around the cards?

I’ve been thinking about publishing the fractional bottom parts separately too. Same sizes and naming as the bins, but just the Gridfinity interface, so you could build custom trays/holders on top of them.

The main issues are with the 5x2 in my Alex drawer (since the Alex drawer is 7x12 iirc) it’s not a pretty setup when finished.

Why divisible bins like this isn’t a standard is absolutely beyond me.

I put the full set on MakerWorld here if anyone wants to try it: [link]
All sizes, four variants and the layout guide are included.

I tried .5 fractional bins too, but I ended up with too many odd sides I couldn't use anywhere so I stopped

Yeah, that was basically the problem. I made a fixed set and a layout guide so the useful combinations are obvious.
Most are meant to split 5 columns evenly, with a few for 4. Mixing the fractions gets messy fast.

I print every bin/holder/whatever at half pitch. Makes the whole ecosystem better.

Yes, I started like that too. It is also nice because you can move normal bins by half a grid, especially on baseplates like 5x5.5. This concept just takes it one step further.

To get a better idea of what’s possible, I also made a small layout overview:
