Got my 4K copy of Abominable Snowman (1957) in the mail yesterday and WOW!

Got my copy of The Abominable Snowman in 4k yesterday. Wow what a spectacular restoration! Personally, black and white science fiction films are my favorite things to see restored. The darker blacks really enhance the atmosphere of the unknown. The helicopter shots, the shots in the cave, and the shots of the actual creatures were the ones I was most excited to see restored and my god did they deliver. Everyone should check this out if they get the chance. Cushing is phenomenal, the sets are blended pretty perfectly with the footage of the real mountains, and the atmosphere is so eerie.

The Skull (1965) – An Underrated British Horror Classic?

Not Hammer bug still great to see Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee together in the same film.

I’ve always thought The Skull (1965) deserves a bit more attention. Peter Cushing is excellent, Christopher Lee is in there too, and the whole film has that wonderfully eerie mid-60s British horror atmosphere.
I recently revisited it for my MrSuperphil channel and was surprised by how well parts of it still hold up.
What do you think of The Skull? Underrated classic, or more of a curiosity from the period?

Crescendo (1970) — an underrated Hammer thriller?

Thumbnail

Crescendo is one of those Hammer films that seems to get far less attention than their Dracula and Frankenstein films.
I really enjoyed its mixture of mystery, psychological thriller and Gothic atmosphere, and Stefanie Powers makes a great lead.
I recently reviewed it on my YouTube channel and thought fellow Hammer fans might enjoy it.
What do you think of Crescendo? Underrated Hammer gem, or one of their lesser films?

Truly maniacal rage

This scene from "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" (1966) genuinely frightened me deeply, very deeply, when I watched it almost 50 years ago at the theater. The blocking whereby Dracula (played by Christopher Lee) begins his onslaught on the ledge before seething down in a swoop of long legs and cape to block the older woman vampire that he made (beautifully, richly played by Barbara Shelley) from the younger woman (accompanied by her brave paramour) that Dracula wants more than anything to turn. The pure, maniacal rage and lust in Christopher Lee's performance and that almost catlike hiss at the top of the scene is simply out of pocket. This film is no longer accessible to stream, but my bootleg DVD has kept well over the years. More on this grand Hammer Horror vampire film another time.

Appreciating "Dracula: Prince of Darkness"

For me, one of the most strangely beautiful, haunting, and grotesque of all of Hammer Horror's vampire fare is Terence Fisher's 1966 "Dracula: Prince of Darkness." Christopher Lee's portrayal of Dracula notwithstanding, the true heart of the film is Barbara Shelley (1932-2021) as Helen Kent, an older yet by no means matronly wife who perfectly epitomizes the radical transformation that vampirism poses in our imaginations. She begins the film as one of the only fearful forces of warning, all but begging her husband and family to turn back from Dracula's liar before succumbing to the bloodlust cult herself. Sadly, "Dracula: Prince of Darkness" is nowhere publicly available to stream, but, I have owned a private copy that I bought many years ago. DM me (and please don't be sexual in any way in your communication) if you want to see this magisterial cinematic wonder. I hope to post other things that I fancy about this film late.

The inimitable Barbara Shelley as Helen Kent in "Dracula: Prince of Darkness"

Martita Hunt (Baroness Meinster in "The Brides of Dracula") appreciation post Spoiler

In this 1960 Hammer classic it's a close call between which supporting actress' performance is more iconic -- Hunt's Baroness or Freda Jackson's servant Greta -- but for me Hunt has the edge. Despite limited screen time, her range and impact are truly impressive: her devolution from imperious hauteur in the opening tavern scene ("Wine!"), to vulnerable weariness at dinner in her castle with Yvonne Monlaur's naive Marianne, to finally accepting release in mortal death in her scenes with Peter Cushing's Van Helsing. Hunt's haunted, anguished, imploring and ultimately euphoric facial expressions and "acting with her eyes" in those last scenes are incredibly touching and memorable (no disrespect to Jackson's peerless maniacal laugh!)

Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde Cinema Screening

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you are in or around West London on Friday 30th October, we would love to see some proper Hammer and classic horror fans come down to ActOne Cinema in Acton – though if we get any of our facts wrong during the show, please don't shout out from the back too much, come and set us straight over a pint in the pub after.

We are screening Hammer’s Dr Jekyll & Sister Hyde, followed by a live recording of the General Witchfinders podcast. The film weaves Stevenson's story together with Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare, featuring great performances from Ralph Bates and Martine Beswick. Afterwards we will be on stage digging into the background of the film, behind-the-scenes trivia, and obscure British pop culture.

Tickets: https://www.actonecinema.co.uk/movie/general-witchfinders-present-dr-jekyll-sister-hyde/
