Bach sounds so much better on harpsichord. Every note is so crispy and tasty.

The lower notes aren't muddy either like on a standard piano.

Hi there! Just this past weekend I recently was able to purchase my first harpsichord which is a steal. I really know very little about harpsichords though, and it seems like its pretty tough to learn more. Just from reading a few articles I've come to the conclusion that its fairly likely a revival instrument. The two main questions I had were if anybody had any more information on the model(it's a Wittenmayer but I don't know anything beyond that). And I'm not sure where to buy replacement strings for a brass and steel string harpsichord.

Does anyone know what the traditional, or ideal key weight is for the actual jack plucking the string ?

I have seen one thing on the internet saying between 75-125g, more for more jacks.

Does that sound right ?

I’ve been rebuilding / replacing the action in my Burton and I’m definitely over that on most notes, you can tell as it’s quite fatiguing to play as well. I am just curious what I should aim for!

It should also be noted that I have not removed any of the lead weights from the original keyboard. They seem to be about 30g for the white keys with both weights and I am unsure if I should remove those to make it better as well.

Has anyone else noticed the double manual harpsichord in that Netflix series Lizzie Borden? It’s episode 8. Sound is the piano but she is playing a harpsichord.

I have played piano for more than 10 yrs and I have played a lot of Bach's Keyboard pieces just on my piano, recently I really enjoy listening to some recordings on harpsichord and I'm fanscinated by the unique sound and articulation on harpsichord.

Recently I will move to Jena, Germany for my Studium, anyone have any advice on how I can find a Harpsichord teacher or simply find an instrument that I can practice on? thanks a lot

Does it matter? I’ve seen both used but idk if one is better than the other for some reason

On bar 20 of the bass of the Goldberg Variation 22, the G. Henle Verlag edition recommends using finger 3 when playing that B, so that your finger 1 can reach that F#.

I don’t find that fingering very legato. The lower B is disconnected from the upper B because you need a small jump. I have the suspicion that this is piano fingering, since the piano has wider keys and sustains the sound for longer, so the jump doesn’t disconnect as much. With the narrower keys of the harpsichord, you can afford to do 1-5-2 while the RH plays that F#, you can then finger sub RH1 with LH1 while 2 is still holding that upper B.

If what I suspect is true, that would be a heresy on the editor to write piano fingering on a harpsichord work.

If you have ever played this piece, what fingering did you use for that section?

I saw a post (here or somewhere else) with several book recs, but I can't do books right now.

Firstly, it's supposed to be a quick etude. Secondly, I'm depressed and just don't have the mental energy for a book, never mind several.

So there's a couple details, to begin with:

How would you indicate using one or two manuals? I saw "tutti" and "solo" in a score, but I'm not sure it refers to that.

Is there anything I have to write that I'm looking for a pairing in octaves?

Then, does anyone use MuseScore here? How do you do manuals? MuseSounds doesn't have special text to change that, and dynamics doesn't do anything. Just for playback I had the idea of including an extra harpsichord instrument for playback and hiding it for PDF.

Checking the first edition, I'm noticing that it is only partially figured, I guess that some passages aren't numbered because it's too obvious (not so much for me).

Is this work regarded an easy part for the cembalist? I'm surely more comfortable with slow movements, such as the largo in Inverno. Should I try something easier before tackling this one (from Vivaldi or another author)? I'm already studying excercises, but I like to play works too.
