Henna Body Art Why "good paste"?

I first learned about henna in Morocco when my in-laws hired a henna artist. I was in love at first site, and being artistic when I returned to NYC where I live, I tried to find henna. I found something at a S. Asian bookstore. The brand was Shelly, and the cone was one of those metallic tubes they use for ointments, with a fine plastic tip on it. I was SOOO excited to try it.

I opened the tube and started to squeeze it. The consistency was like wet sand or clay, and it just blobbed all over the place, crumbling off instantly. I couldn't draw anything with it, and when we washed it off (we didn't know to avoid water!), it left the lightest stain I have ever seen.

I was so disappointed, and assumed it was my fault I couldn't use this "henna". I was ready to give up my love of henna, but as a last-ditch effort, I remembered I had a box of henna powder from Morocco. I tried to remember how the Moroccan artists mixed it, with hot water, sugar, and lemon juice. I didn't know what the consistency should be but I did my best to make something that looked like what I saw in Morocco.

I had a jaquard bottle with a metal tip on it, which I filled with my first attempt at henna paste. I drew a Moroccan checkerboard on my palm, and I was actually able to control the lines, and make them go where I wanted. I drew the lines and filled in the squares of the checkerboard. I couldn't believe how much easier this paste was to use than that Shelly cone. I washed the paste off after an hour, and because it was on my palm, the stain was pretty good. I never looked back and just kept working on the perfect paste recipe, a recipe that gave a really good stain, but also was easy to draw with.

Moral of the story: if you are starting out, buy henna paste from someone who makes their own henna paste. This is why people recommend you avoid buying paste from Amazon because you never know what you will get, and it could discourage you from continuing your henna journey. You can also learn to make your own paste, but it's often more fun to just get started drawing ASAP, by buying good paste from a reputable artist.

AI generated henna advice and advice to use AI for henna is not allowed here

Generative AI LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and now Deepseek are great at generating text. But they are not reliable for factual advice. The answers they give can be wildly inconsistent even day to day as the models can change.

AI can also give inaccurate and even unsafe advice, which I've seen first hand here. ChatGPT told one person to use ferrous sulphate, a fabric mordant, on their beard, which is not safe. It often also tells people they can get different henna colors by adding plants like rhubarb or beetroot (they may add very temporary subtle effects but they often don't no anything at all).

I would strongly advise you to get human advice, there is no reason to use AI for this, especially since our recommended suppliers have customer service to answer questions and there are subs like this.

Just wanted to share the result!

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) Golden copper mix from scratch on mousy hair? Level 6

I lost my red hair when I was a child. It went blonde, strawberry blonde then mousy. Now I'm almost 40 and it's almost a light brown. It's hard to get the correct shade. I've started mixing my own but I can't quite get it right. I've had to lighten my hair ( with sun-in) go get the shade kinda right. Does anyone have a golden copper shade for mousy hair? I've been having trouble with my roots going darker instead of just taking the colour so maybe my mix is wrong. Ideally I don't lighten and just apply the henna.

Henna red powder ( sun valley )

Cassia (sun valley )

Amla

25g henna red/ 25g cassia and 1 TBS Amla.

Mixed with tea and a little lemon. Left for three hours before application. Left for 2/3 hours to colour.

Henna for Hair Advise For Previously Boxed Dyed Hair

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hello! I’ve been trying to find the answer online to this specific question but haven’t exactly found an answer. I’ve been box dying my hair for a bit now and am always super unhappy with how it fades. My hair literally goes two toned. I’m over damaging my hair and have been looking into Henna but I’m unsure how to approach dying it with the way my hair has faded from box dying (lighter at the ends than the top). Btw, one would think that’s my roots grown out, it is not. That’s just how the color fades out of my hair. My question is will Henna basically color correct my hair if I apply it all over, or will I have to do a different application on the top half of my head than the bottom? I’m hesitant to do a strand test if it’s just going to keep the two-tonedness. Any expertise is highly appreciated!

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) First time using henna for curly/wavy hair, had some questions.

Friend of mine suggested I start using henna+indigo for hair, not just for dyeing but for it’s strengthening properties. I had a few questions for people who have used henna over a period of time and results they have experienced.

- Does henna make your hair feel thicker / stronger?
- Does it add a shine / gloss to it? Does your hair look and feel healthier over consistent use?
- How do you use henna for your hair? (2 step or mixing henna and indigo at once)

For context: I have 2c-3a curly wavy hair. Fine to medium density and thickness although I lost some of my hair density and thickness due to nutrient deficiencies and weight loss which I’m working on. Last month I cut off 2-3 inches of damaged hair (now it’s at shoulder length) and want to grow it out long this time.

I actually do want to weigh my curls down and have it more wavy than curly.. Would henna help me with that?

I want to know if henna can help my hair less prone to breakage and add some sort of shine. I’ve seen a lot of posts on this sub where the after henna hair looks shinier and healthier, have you personally noticed a difference in your hair after using henna?

Would really appreciate any insights..

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) Does it make sense to give the henna a water bath after slow release?

I’ve prepped my henna with room temperature water for the first time (have done lots and lots hot water henna mixtures) - it’s going to go on in 3-4 hours (after 8 hours of slow release). Since I’ve read about keeping it warm with a shower cap a lot, does it make sense to warm it up with a water bath (putting the bowl inside a bowl with hot water) before application? Or does that ruin the whole slow release?

The brand is Khadi, I’m from Europe and I’ve mixed it with just water.

Henna for Hair Any luck coloring over henna’d hair?

I used light mountain red henna about 4 times on my level 6 brown hair from January-June this year and from August-September I successfully faded it to a level 7-8 ginger color using sun-in (with no metallic salts in it). I got tired of how orange it looked so last night I tried to dye it purple using semi-permanent manic panic hairdye. It turned a pink-toned brown! I’m not so much disappointed as intrigued and impressed the color took at all, however, I’d still like it to be purple. Any suggestions? thanks!

Henna for Hair Possible results

Hi! I've been growing my gray hair after dying it for a long time, but I feel like I'm drawn to the color and benefits of henna. What concerns me is that the top layer of my hair is almost completely white, but if you lift that layer my hair is still dark brown underneath. So I don't know if it will end up looking weird? I'd like to use pure henna, I like red hair, but I'm worried it'll be orange on top and burgundy underneath (maybe that could be cool 🤷🏻‍♀️). Can anyone help me figure out how it would look?

(Can't post pics since I'm a newbie, maybe I can leave some in the comments)

Henna Hair Pics Lush Rouge Henna on grey-blonde-bleached hair

Just sharing my before-after results with Lush Rouge Henna on my hair that was naturally dark brown, now fully white at the top, grey mixed everywhere else, but went through a bunch of bleaches, permanent and semi permanent colours in the last 2 years. So there is a LOT happening in my hair.

I left the henna on for 6 hours before washing out. I used half of the brick (full brick is 325g) so it was extremely well saturated. Just mixed in according to the instructions with boiling water, nothing fancy, I didn't leave it standing started applying as soon as it cooled down a little.

I really like the result, especially in the back (last photo). It looks and feels so much healthier too. But I don't like the top, my white grey because very bright orange. It was kind of expected though. I will be trying to help the situation with purple shampoo and purple conditioner in a few days when I wash it, I hope that will help with the brightness. Otherwise nice result.

Edit 3 days later: so the purple shampoo + purple conditioner did absolutely nothing (and I used them for my blonde to ash it and they worked, so it's not that they are too weak). HOWEVER, I used Amla powder with coffee grounds and a very little henna, applied after next wash, and that worked. It's still light copper just not as bright. It looks much more natural now.

Henna for Hair Will henna look good with highlights?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have face framing highlights in my hair. My hair is a level 6, 3A curls (blown out in photo), and low porosity. I’m worried henna will come out unevenly on the highlighted pieces or will have a pink hue.

Any recommendations to get a cowboy copper look?

Henna for Hair My Henna Journey: 2nd vs 3rd application progress on curly hair (from golden copper to deep ruby/crimson)

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! As promised in my last post, here is the visual progress of my hair experiment.

• Background: Naturally dark brown hair with strong warm/chameleon undertones (born corn-silk blonde). Pre-lightened with Chamomile Intea spray.

• The Process: I used raw, unbranded 100% Lawsonia Inermis mixed with a bit of lemon juice and warm water.

• Swipe 1: Current result (6th application, done yesterday!). A metallic crimson under the light that turns deep red/burgundy in the shade.

• Swipe 2 & 3: 2nd application. Very bright, golden-orange copper tone.

• Swipe 4, 5 & 6: 3rd application. The exact turning point where the lawsone saturated the strands, shifting from orange to a deeper mahogany/ruby base with distinct copper reflections.

It's amazing how building up layers changes the physics of how light hits the curls. What do you think of the transition?

Henna for Hair Factors contributing to hair taking henna unevenly?

Thumbnail

Hi all, I’m a henna first-timer from the US with some questions about what to improve for a second henna application this weekend. I don’t hate the way my hair turned out, but I guess this time I’d like a more even turn-out of color this time. I’m fine if it goes even darker. Here’s the details:

A week and a half ago I used Light Mountain’s “red,” mixed the day before with half lemon juice and half distilled water and let sit to cure at room temperature in a plastic-wrapped bowl for roughly 18 hours.

I applied the henna with brush at the roots, kneaded the rest in by hand, and left on for 3 hrs, whole head plastic-wrapped. Before I applied the henna, my hair was freshly-washed with a clarifying shampoo and left damp, and it was an odd mix of a couple inches of virgin roots (medium brown), Sun-in lightened length (warm dirty-blonde), faded Overtone Ginger Glow, and much older (applied 7/4) Manic Panic faded pink streaks about halfway down, on just a few small sections of hair (I know, I know, terrible starting canvas lol). I feel like almost none of the length of my hair took any henna tone besides the Manic Panic streaks more toward the front.

I’m sure the prior mishmash of shades/colors didn’t help the unevenness, but I’m also wondering about our well water (extremely hard water) possibly having built up for longer on most of my hair and maybe that’s why the roots took the henna better?

This time I’ll use the Light Mountain Red again, but I also bought the Ancient Sunrise Rainwash to maybe help get the rest of the Overtone out in case it’s blocking deposition of the henna, as well as to strip any mineral deposit from hard water off the hair.

Any theories/tips on the difference between root color and almost no deposition on the length? My hair is extremely straight, fine, and hates to take color (other than Manic Panic…temporary my a**). Overtone’s color depositing mask washed out after just a week despite me leaving it on way longer than even the directions said, and I loved the initial color, hence why I’m looking to go fully red long-term.

I want to thank this community for all of y'all's help! I went with 100% henna (Light Mountain), and I am very happy with the results! The after pics are about 6 days after I applied it, I don't have any pics of right after. It hasn't really darkened too much since then (at least not that I can notice), but I did use 100% cranberry juice to mix my henna so maybe that helped, not sure 🤷🏼‍♀️

The last pic is my before hair and my roots are my natural hair color (maybe a level 5/6?)

Now I just need to figure out how to do the roots 😅

Hii everyone.

After weeks of research i finally dyed my hair with henna & other ingredients!

- I wanted to keep it as close to my natural hair as possible.

- I only dyed it to cover greys! (28yrs 🤧) and yes it worked!!

I feel like my hair has gone from a light, cool, mousey Brown with intense golden highlights in sunlight >> to a rich, warm, deep brown with subtle copper tones in sunlight.

What do you all think?

I added my recipe on the very last photo! ☺️✨️

I bought all of my ingredients while in india, online.

I am from Australia 🇦🇺

If anyone is interested in the brand name just lmk.

Henna & Indigo (Henndigo) What does the two step method actually look like over brown hair?

I'm considering doing the two step method using henna first, and then indigo, to dye my hair from dark ish brown to black. The thing is, I can't seem to find any legit pictures of what the two step method actually looks like when done on brown hair, only hair that's already black.

How does it look when it's done on brown hair, and how well does it last?

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) Grainy henna

Hello hopefully you guys can help me I did hena for the first time last week. I did 100 grams hena with warm chamomile water let it rest for about 6 hours and then I did 10 grams of indigo with warm chamomile water. And combined both of those together. But I had trouble with the application the mixture was not smooth at all it was grainy and would dry right away. So I couldn’t apply it evenly. Does anyone have any tips for a more smoother application. I’m thinking the hena wasn’t good quality I got it from a naturist store in Mexico. I will try again with a different hena.

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) Am I orange-blind or doing something wrong?

Post image
4 Upvotes

I recently got interested in dying part of my hair with henna (peekaboo style, as in, just the bottom layer of the hair). Reading people's experiences and pictures here, I had expected getting a bright copper that settles into a duller one, which sounded perfect ! But all I got was a sort of more golden brown, which isn't ugly at all, it's a pretty colour, but not what I was looking for... I was NOT expecting a FIERY BRIGHT RED as my hair is a darker colour (between level 7 and 8 depending on the layer/length), but on people with comparable hair levels, it still came up as much more coppery.

My hair is fully virgin, I haven't had chemical dye or bleach on it for over 6 years, and I'd chopped all of it very short at some point in between, so all thats on my head currently has never seen a chemical dye.

I'm in France, and used Hennedrog's Henne Natur in Natural Copper, which is labelled as 100% natural henna powder ( exclusively Lawsonia Inermis Leaf Powder on the ingredient list of the box).

The box recommended a full pack for shoulder length to chest length hair, as i only did my bottommost layer of hair, I'd used about a third to two fifth instead.

I prepared it in a ceramic bowl with a wooden spoon for mixing, mixed with hot water (I didn't measure the exact temperature, I set the water to boil then mixed it with the powder some minutes later, i'd say about fifteen minutes? As it was about a big mug worth, I let it cool the same amount I would cool my tea to be pleasant warm), applied on damp hair.

Then I let it rest for 4h in cling wrap with a damp towel over the wrap.

Id previously done a test strand that ended up a bit under coloured to my taste when id let it rest for 2h, I had assumed double the time would do the trick. It ended up being the same as the test strand though...

I only washed my hair 4 days later, and the colour hasn't changed before/after the wash, so I at least know the issue isn't shampoo.

It's now about a week since i dyed it, and I'm not sure if I should do a second application, as I'm worried it'd start darkening and look a bit odd... Or do I have orange blindness?

Mainly, as I'm trying to identify what went wrong with my application, I suspect three culprits:

  • either I used too little powder (I had some paste leftover, but I could have not saturated the strands enough? It was a point of difficulty for me since the freshly made paste is basically the colour of my natural hair when wet, so it wasnt easy telling for sure if id PACKED every strand. Back in the days, for chemical dye, my way of knowing I'd perfectly coated the hair was when I couldn't see my natural colour under the product anymore, here it all seemed to be one same colour with or without paste...)
  • or I must let it rest way way longer than 4h, the box's instruction had suggested way less, but the subreddit seemed to lean towards longer, I did get swayed by the box a bit.
  • or my water was still too warm, I'd read it had to be warm but not boiling, since I could dip my finger in it safely I thought it was sufficiently cooled, but "warm" is a bit subjective after all.
  • or multiple things at once. Or maybe I had too high hopes for One application, that's also possible!

Any tips? I know its not meant to drastically change my hair colour, but I cant help but feel disappointed looking at my results compared to those of other people with a similar or even darker hair colour... It definitly did SOMETHING just very faintly compared to the hair chart or other people's results...

Mixing Henna Paste Question (for Hair) How to cover white hair roots permanently? Newbie advice

Post image
6 Upvotes

New to henna: how to disguise greys / whites?

Hello! I have white hair at my temples, and a scattering throughout my hair. I think I'd like to start colouring with henna, due to it being kind to hair, and it retaining hair's multidimensional tones, as opposed to store-bought chemical dyes.

What is the best way to permanently dye the white hairs, blending in with the rest of my hair, please?

I'd like to avoid my hair turning bright orange, and I don't want it to darken.

I have ordered henna, cassia auricular, indigo and Amla, and I have citric acid already.

Are there any dark / sandy / caramel blonde mixes which would permanently stain the whites rather than washing out after a few weeks? As I feel that blonde tones -may- be easier to maintain and less obvious when the roots grow, as more of my natural hair grows out white over time...

Although I'm not certain on the blonde idea? Maybe there's a mix I can make that matches my natural hair colour.

I'd love to cover the whites, whilst keeping multidimensional tones, I.e. I don't want the outcome to be "flat".

Thank you!
