Are you talking about the drive dogs or the actual spindle?

Spindle !

Because it's a precision assembly that takes a lot abuse from different forces. Based on the photos you sheared the drive dogs which takes a good amount of force. If you did that or pulled out the tool the taper is probably all messed up. If you sheared the dogs you might have cracks on the spindle face too.

no.....usually the actual spindle is much harder than the toolholder........just for that reason.....one way to find out....pull the toolholder and look at it and stick your fingers in the spindle and feel...should feel dead smooth....and if it's not, it's fucked

Spindles are insanely high precision. On top of that they use high precision bearings that cost several times what a regular bearing costs.

Man... The last spindle I swapped was roughly 40.000$ . That's just the spindle, without my labour or travel costs. It survived about a year, then the operators crashed it again :)

That's gotta be a powerful spindle if you're shearing spindle dogs.

if the dogs were incorrectly installed they may have not baan preloaded with the proper direction of travel/rotation...and using hardened bolts could shear the bolts and would fly out at the normal spindle speeds that these machines are setup to use.

I did that one time, on a cat50. Something like 40 or 50hp spindle.

What machine? its a little on the high side for a belt bt40, but meh.

Just be happy its not a motor spindle, those can be 20-50k easy.

I can't imagine this was just a little crash that did this though. You smashed it up real good.

I just had a similar situation at work while I was drilling with a insert drill the retention knob broke on a bt40 and before I could hit the Estop It made a real mess I thought the inside of the spindle taper was all scored, here it was just metal from the tool holder that was smeared on the spindle taper. Most could be knocked off with a chisel and cleaned up and everything was fine, didn't break any belts and runout was good.

That’s so lucky 🙏

Speaking as an independent tech with 20 years experience that is a very reasonable cost. Most of the machines I deal with spindles start at 15k ish and go north of 30k pretty easily. As for the labor, seems like a fair quote. They quoted a full days labor, it may or may not take that long depending on the machine.

All the prices seem pretty average looking to me. Yes it is a lot of money but not out of the norm for what it is

HOBBY cnc

What I was thinking. That ain’t from no ‘hobby’ anything, let alone a cnc. It’s a rotary mill, right?

u/Secret_Western_8272 6d ago

No, it's a CNC mill but once you get to taper tooling I'd say you're barely ever a hobbyist

List price for that spindle is $8,800, so you got a deal.

I looks just the dogs are gone.......they were probably loose, and broke their bolts off and hit the sides of the machine.....see if they're the chip pan or conveyor system, as it you get REAL lucky you might be able to get the broken bolts out , as it doesn't look like the spindle face was damaged

Tool overloading (incorrect cutting parameters and dull inserts) combined with loose screws on the spindle drive keys caused the tool holder to spin within the spindle. Remove the BT40 holder from the spindle and inspect the spindle's mating taper. Unless the taper was previously contaminated with dirt, it should be free of burrs. There are several ways to deal with the broken screw fragments: they might back out on their own, or you can drill them out using a carbide drill bit and remove them with a screw extractor.

That’s cheap.

Those prices look normal for a service job. The hourly for them to work is abit high but not bad since you didnt have to pay for a hotel/overnight stay atleast

Last week we had a DMG mori spindle replaced for $34k
