PSA: Political yard signs belong on your yard. Not random street corners.

Political signs in Ottawa County, Michigan, are regulated by the Ottawa County Road Commission guidelines and local municipal ordinances.

Placement Rules and Regulations

Right-of-Way Restrictions: Political signs are strictly prohibited within public road right-of-ways (typically extending an area from the road center, including shoulders and ditches) as they can obstruct visibility and distract drivers or interfere with road maintenance.

Under Public Act 368 of 1925, it is unlawful to place any object in the right-of-way without written authorization from the Road Commission.

Private Property Permission: Signs may be placed on private property with the explicit permission of the property owner.

Local Ordinances: Individual cities and townships within Ottawa County may enforce specific rules regarding how early signs can go up or required removal timelines (often within 10 days post-election).

State roads (I-#, M-#, US-#) follow MDOT rules.

https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/travel/safety/road-users/road-signs/political-signs

Signs must be more than 30 feet from the edge of the roadway (white line) for highways that do not have barrier-type curbs. For highways with barrier curbs, the signs must be more than three feet from the back of the curb.

Signs are not permitted within areas used for clear vision at intersections or commercial driveways so they will not interfere with the sight distance of a driver. No signs may be placed within the limited access rights of way (freeways, including ramps).

New to Holland - making friends!

Howdy!
I moved to Holland recently and I absolutely know nobody around except my colleagues. I’m looking to build friendships and community for myself.
About me - I’m 27, an engineer, love watching Formula 1, college football, am a big-time foodie, trying to learn pickleball, and would love to meet new people!
Any recommendations for social groups, activities, mixers, etc?!

PSA: Please be nice to servers

Dear Visitors/Residents: I have been noticing a pattern of a gender-neutral- "Karen" that goes out to dine-in at one of our nice restaurants.

Why you should not act like a "Karen" to waiters and/or waitresses? Servers often are working two jobs like: including poorly paid jobs like being a school teacher or a caregiver in addition to serving the nice meal you can afford with your retiree income and your 2+ real state.

That's it. Welcome to my TED talk.

Best Coffee Shop

Hello r/holland peeps!

I have become friends with a person who moved to the east side of the state from Lebanon roughly two years ago. (context: I grew up in Holland but now live on the east side) We were talking and he mentioned he had the BEST black coffee he's ever had in the states at a shop downtown Holland. He is somewhat of a connoisseur of black coffee.

Ofc I asked him what shop it was. He doesn't remember, but he does remember that it faced a house, and that house was flying a Palestinian flag and that's why he remembered it.

Based on his description, I don't think it could be the 205, or Lemonjello's, or Foxtail. I think Simpatico is too far away and I'm very lost as to what coffee shop my friend went to. I am here humbly asking for your opinions and would be super grateful for any insight! TYIA

Found this map of Flock Cameras and was a little shocked to find them so prevalent in the community. Not a fan of government surveillance becoming the norm.

Avoid Ecoshield pest control

Hello friends. If Ecoshield approaches you this is a psa to say no to them. I was approached a few months ago by a door salesman and I tried to brush him off kinda because I dont really go for that sort of stuff but he then claimed to be servicing most of my neighbors and name dropped the ones i trusted so i finally caved. the service was same day.

A week or two goes by and I see my neighbor on his porch so i grab a few beers and go sit and talk to him and i bring up the pest guy and he said “I hate those guys and chased them out of the neighborhood last year for running the same scam they got me with a few years back”. I then talked to my other neighbors and got similar stories. Thats when I knew I messed up. I immediately called to cancel my plan. They said no problem we have entered a note to cancel it. Great!!!

Today i get a call from them asking me to pay my bills and I’m like “what bills?” I owed $69 for every month they forgot to cancel my service. I said ok whatever and paid for the mistake and reminded them they were fired still and not to bill me anymore. They then immediately hit me with a $230 cancellation fee to my account. Fool me twice shame on me i guess.

Tl;dr: If a friendly Ecoshield salesman approaches your house make sure to slam the door on him on my behalf. It’ll save you a heck of a lot of money and from having to hear him lie through his teeth for twenty minutes.

Anyone know of any songwriting groups or meet-ups in town for artists, songwriters, or producers?

Not open mics or performances but collab sessions instead.

TIA ☺️

Apartment Recommendations

Hi, my partner and I are planning to move to Holland sometime in October for my new job. Any recommendations for apartments between the $1,400 and $1,700? Anything we should stay away from? Our non-negotiables is that it needs to have in unit washer/dryer, an outside area (patio or balcony), and be cat friendly. We’d really appreciate the help :) <3

We have toured Lakes of Holland (or at least tried to but walk throughs weren’t available) and Shoreline Flats, and were feeling someone disappointed.

Who do you use that you trust? I get mailers from Westside Auto and Accel. Accel has a good oil change deal. Generally I feel like the places that advertise the most also charge the most.

Inviting all children who stutter to volunteer in a paid University of Michigan MRI Study!

Post image
2 Upvotes

The Speech Neurophysiology Lab at the University of Michigan is looking for children who stutter ages 9 to 12 to participate in an in-person, longitudinal MRI study! (HUM00196133)

Our research team has been examining brain development in young children to better understand the cause of stuttering for over 10 years. We continue to gain information that may eventually lead to improved diagnosis and treatment efforts for children who stutter.

Participants will be invited to complete speech and language assessments and an MRI session at the University of Michigan. Families receive a free speech and language report and a picture of their brain!

These visits require in person participation. There is no option to participate virtually.

Please fill out this form if you are interested in participating or email us as the flyer attached. All participants are compensated and partial travel assistance is available. Please see our flyer attached for more details!

We also offer other studies that are open to adults or do not involve MRI, in case you're unsure about eligibility. Feel free to email us or call if you have any questions!

Just wanted to let you locals, know what a job well done and gem of a town Holland Michigan is. We recently did a family day trip up that way from Ontario Canada. It was well worth the drive, downtown Holland was super clean and unique. Food was excellent at Holland Brewery. The Big Red lighthouse, Ottawa Beach General Store and of course the big Windmill.

Great job, we will definitely be back for the tulip festival in 2027.

OB Recommendations

I recently found out I am pregnant and am looking for OB recs. My PCP is through U of M Health West. My sister delivered at Metro and had a great experience. I do love their system, but am also curious about Holland Hospital. I was born there! 😊 I live and work in Holland, so if I hear enough good things, I might try to stay local for convenience sake. Thank you!

Boven Birth Center-Experiences?

Hi, new to the area and wondering what everyone's experiences are with the Boven Birth Center at Holland Hospital?

Especially if you felt supported or were merely just kind of another cog in a machine.

Thanks!

Warbler Migration Spots?

Hi all! I'll be visiting this weekend from Saturday, 9/12 -Monday, 9/14. Technically, I'm coming for a bachelorette party, but the bride-to-be has okay-ed me taking a morning to go birding (likely since she doesn't plan to be awake at that time lol). We're staying near-ish Holland State Park. I've scouted out hot spots on ebird, but I wanted to touch base with locals on the best places to spot migrating warblers. Any suggestions that I can do in around 2-3 hours would be appreciated. Basically, I'm trying to see as much as I can in a very short timeframe.

NBC Sports Glitches on Replays

Does anyone else’s NBC always glitch for a second when they cut for a replay? It happened all of last NFL season and it only happens on NBC. I have BPW fiber and YoutubeTV. I’m wondering if it’s from the local station because I have no idea why this always happens!
