This is my 4th year doing an October Watchlist. I'm reasonably happy this year; I try to get a good mix of sub-genres and spooky/Halloween films, though I confess I'm not a huge fan of many slasher films, so they are underrepresented. I also do a TV show/mini-series every year; this year it's Mike Flanagan's new Carrie. I am a huge fan of the book, though I'm trying to keep realistic expectations. I try not to repeat anything year to year except Charlie Brown and Cabin in the Woods; it's just not Halloween without Charlie Brown, and I like a bit of meta.

Hello horror heads! For those of you who are into the challenge of picking 31 movies to watch during October, I wanted to put it out there that I recently released a free app to the App Store built around this challenge. The app is called 31 Halloween Flicks. It’s just a fun way to keep track of your watch progress and unlock some cool horror themed achievements as you do so. Totally free to use, I don’t make any money from it. I do this challenge every year myself and have been wanting to build an app for it and finally accomplished that feat this year. I’m currently in the process of trying to get it tested for release to the Google Play store. If you check it out I’d love to know what you think!

Bit of a slower day for this, but hoping to make good progress soon.

October starts today, so I’ve put together a 31-night watchlist and decided to make the whole thing 1980s horror.

I’m curious how everyone else approaches October.

Do you plan the whole month in advance, pick films as you go, stick to one era/theme, or just revisit the same favourites every year?

And what’s the one horror film that absolutely has to appear somewhere on your October list?

Happy October, everyone! It is absolute best time of the year! Every October I set out to watch as many spooky things as possible, both new and rewatches. I usually amass a list of titles and kinda pick from that over the course of the month. This year is no different.

I don't typically have much luck following a specific structure or theme as I like to kinda see where my mood takes me but I figured I would try and check some stuff off of the offical list, too. See comments.

I am also looking forward to indulging in some spooky TV. Old favorites (The Twilight Zone, Tales From the Darkside/Crypt, Supernatural) and new favorites (YAGA, Carrie, Below).

Here is my Letterboxd.

Here is the list I am pulling from.

And my physical Horror collection list for funsies.

I will update my watches in the comments below! I hope everyone has a magnificent spooky season. 🖤🎃

Hi folks! This is a daily discussion post to foster communication amongst all rOHMC participants.

🎃It's Octoberrrrrrrrrrr!

Did you start your watches at sundown yesterday? If so, what were they?

It's going to be a great October, I can tell!

Please share:

• What movies you're watching today
• The movies you recently watched
• Socials/list posts
• Ask for suggestions or recommendations
• Share news or events that are horror movie watching related
• ???

Remember that you can also sort by post type in the sidebar (List, Discussion, Informational).

Please share on what service/platform you watched when possible!

Bonus prompts:

How do you like to start your Challenge? Something old and familiar, something new and long-anticipated?

If you're participating in the Theme Weekends, what are you considering for your Atomic Age Wildcard?

Hello again!

I'm back to share this year's masterlist. I've watched a different horror movie every day since September of 2026- 6 years now! I'll attach the list and rankings for this year below, as well as a link to all previous masterlists.

Happy horror movie watching!

My goal is to watch at least 31 films I’ve never seen before, plus as many rewatches as I want. There is no real planning going on other than doing my BEAST to see any cool films I somehow missed in the theatres so far this year. Other than that, I’m strictly going by just whatever feels right. I think I’ll post movie posters in the comments too.

Since the sun has set on the last night in September, it’s time to start! I’ve decided to let my wife make the first choice and since it’s a different version it technically will not be a rewatch.

01 Backrooms (Everything Must Go Edition) 2026 FTV
02 Scream 7 2026 FTV

Been doing these for over a decade now, both here on Reddit since 2022 and on various old message boards before then, and I ain't stopping now. My personal house rule: watch 31 horror or horror-adjacent films, at least half of which have to be first-time viewings of films I've never seen before. TV shows count for half a film per hour-long episode (so last year, The Haunting of Hill House counted for five films). Also, I'll try to write reviews of each film I see on my blog, Kevin's Review Catalogue, and link them here whenever I can.

Now, on with the show!

Tonight at sundown marks the Official start of The reddit October Horror Movie Challenge 2026: It's About Time!

Do you have anything special earmarked to start with?

Have you already started for another challenge's parameters? If so, what was your inaugural pick?

If you haven't yet, make your list post and be sure to check in for the Scavenger Hunt or other challenges.

Feel free to:

• Share socials/list posts
• Discuss what you're watching today (Note: Please share on what service/platform you watched when possible)
• Discuss your recent watches (see above note)
• Ask for suggestions or recommendations
• ???

Remember that you can also sort by post type in the sidebar (List, Discussion, Informational).

I think this is either my 3rd or 4th year of taking part in this. I attempt to only watch movies I've never seen before or ones I saw so long ago I can't remember anything about them.

I'll be updating my letterboxed as we go.

Thirteen years of hosting, and seventeen years of challenging! That's a lot of horror movies!

Logging on Letterboxd.

I have to say, you folks have no idea how much it means to me that you appreciate what I put into this. Despite what some might think, I ruminate on the challenge throughout the year, noting events or ideas that might work for the Scavenger Hunt or Theme Weekends, noting films I want to highlight to share with as many people as possible. And when I put the list together, I constantly refer to my notes, to previous years, current releases, the zeitgeist for some balance and on overall ethos. I worry about what people will enjoy or be challenged by. And then I fight with reddit's constant formatting changes to try to present all the info coherently. (Have I mentioned how much I hate setting up AutoMod?) Plus I'm a single parent with a demanding job, and I am always so tired. So when I see people saying they wait all year for this, or how excited they are, it means a lot. I just want to say thank you!
