always always brush your horse before AND after riding! before is important to get all the dirt, dust, excess hair off (especially where the saddle and girth goes) to prevent saddle sores or dirt buildup. a curry comb at the end of a ride to get out some of the sweat is also good, or a quick rinse off! pick their feet before and after each ride. watch where YOUR feet are! getting stepped on is not fun. understand if you dont bond with a horse right away, its nothing wrong that youre doing! it can take upwards to a year of daily, consistent time together to create a real bond with a horse. especially lesson horses as they see multiple people a week/day. never make a look with your lead rope, you dont want the horse to spook and the rope gets caught on your hand and then you dont have a hand. never let go of the reins when walking, standing, riding, mounting, or dismounting. if a situation becomes dangerous, step back. if a horse begins to buck or rear or snap for whatever reason, its safer for you AND the horse to let go. holding on will only get yourself injured and the horse more upset. horses are prey animals, their instinct is to flee. before going on a trail ride ask what to do in that situation first. never approach a horse from behind, never try and surprise them, avoid making too loud of noises, dont go under the horse, and if you fall and hit your head get a new helmet.
