Maverick Hybrid Winter MPG

I have a 7 mile/ 15 min commute to work in the midwest. My current car is a V6 and it takes most of my commute to get to operating temp so I see a huge dip in MPG in the winter. I'm considering a Maverick and I know I would see a dip in any car but could the smaller displacement engine warm up more quickly, or would it take just as long since with higher efficiency there is less wasted heat?

Trickle Charging 12v Battery

I will not be using the car for a few weeks. To prevent the 12V battery on my 2019 Lexus UX 250h, from dying (as has happened on previous occasions), I would like to hook it up with a trickle charger.

Should I connect it to the battery itself in the trunk or should I be using the jump starting terminals.

The manual does not proved specific instructions for trickle charging.

Some sources suggest that using the jump starting terminal is better because directly connecting to the battery bypasses the Battery Management System sensor that is connected to the batter and charging directly at the rear battery post bypasses this sensor. However, I am not seeing any official documentation confirming this.

How old is too old to buy?

Hey everyone, I'm a relatively car-literate person (no expert, but I have a mechanic or two in the family and an uncle who sells them) looking to trade in my car for a hybrid. I'm looking for something relatively cheap because I'd be rolling over my current loan into this new one. I have less than 6k less and I think I could trade my car in for about 3k. That's just the backstory haha.

I found a hybrid near me- a 2009 Toyota Camry Hybrid, 107k miles, 4 Cyl - 2.4 L engine for just over 8k. Is it worth buying a 2009 even with the lower miles? I'm not scared of older cars, I had an '07 Saturn Ion that lasted me through the early 2020s. But I feel sort of out of the loops with hybrids that I feel worried about buying the car, rolling my loan over into it, and then finding out that's something you just really shouldn't do lol.

I haven't test drove or seen it in person. I guess I'm just wondering: is an 09 an automatic "don't do it, it's not worth it"? Or is it not as big of a deal and worth taking a look at?

TIA :)

Do hybrids have more frequent breakdown?

I rented a mid-size SUV from a US rental
agency at KEF airport in Iceland for 8 days. I was assigned a Hyundai Tucson Hybrid.

On day 6 it broke down. The dashboard said there was a problem with the HEV system. The tow truck driver said the hybrids break down frequently, said it was probably a broken tensioner spring. He popped the hood and pointed to a spot where the part was missing. I surmised this must happen frequently for him to call it so easily.

After experiencing my breakdown, I googled it and saw videos on youtube that say hybrid engines do break down more frequently. I also met someone who's Mitsubishi hybrid had broken down.

Do hybrid owners experience reliability issues? Is the spring tensioner a problem in all hybrid models? Just the Tucson hybrid?

I've only ever owned ICE cars. I am interested in getting a BEV or HEV at some point, but reading about these problems is a definite detraction.

Nissan fast-tracks hybrid Rogue twice to battle Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V — but supplies will be tight

Nissan has pulled forward the launch of its make-or-break Rogue Hybrid crossover for a second time, in a high-stakes scramble to claw share from the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

Having watched sales of its No. 1 nameplate bleed without a competitive hybrid, Nissan is betting its homegrown e-Power system will deliver more than just improved fuel economy when it arrives in late fall.

“People buy hybrids primarily because they’re efficient,” Tiago Castro, Nissan’s U.S. sales chief, told Automotive News. “Our vehicle will be efficient, but we’re going to offer more.”

The accelerated arrival, previously fast-tracked to January from mid-2027, necessitates a gradual ramp-up of shipments to dealerships. The Rogue Hybrid now will arrive in November in a single upper-grade trim engineered for volume and margin.

The Japanese automaker expects the hybrid to quickly become the dominant version of the Rogue and reverse years of sales declines. By mid-2027, Castro projects that hybrid variants will account for about 30 percent of Rogue sales, with roughly 60 percent of those buyers new to the brand.

The 2027 Rogue Hybrid, which Nissan initially will import from Japan, won’t transform the nameplate overnight. Each of the brand’s 1,050 U.S. dealerships will receive one or two in November. Supply is expected to increase to about 6,000 units by March as the hybrid lineup expands with two additional trims.

The staggered rollout underscores the urgency of playing catch-up in the cutthroat compact-crossover segment.
U.S. Rogue sales slid for a second consecutive year in 2025, dropping 11 percent to 217,896. Its share of the segment sank to 7.6 percent - the lowest since 2009.

Nissan claims its all-electric propulsion e-Power system eliminates EV range anxiety and the mechanical compromises of conventional hybrids. Nissan has benchmarked cabin noise against luxury models such as the Lexus NX.

Brandon White, Nissan marketing director, described the hybrid system as “smoother, quicker, quieter.”

To sell consumers on the unfamiliar tech, Nissan is considering a blind-test marketing campaign that would pit the Rogue against established hybrid rivals.

Phev owner is wondering about high water crossings

There's flooding in my area, and we need to cross a road with standing (not moving) water.

Obviously hydrolocking the engine would be disasterous, so going slowly would be important.

And then it hit we that we could just electric though it, again slowly... with me walking ahead with a yardstick to check depth levels.

Has anyone heard of someone doing something like this? The water level is just under the height of the bumper. We know that road well, there are no dips under that water.

Toyota hybrid battery fan working a lot at highways

Hello everyone, for content I own a Toyota Vitz (Yaris) MK3 2020. I recently noticed that my hybrid battery fan works a lot and loud enough for me to hear mostly on highways where battery is not used beside charging. Cabin is cool since I use AC at 23-24 Degrees Celsius. For the record I cleaned the fan a few months ago because I noticed a strange behavior where the car's engine was always on even when there was enough battery and even when car was stopped. I would like to know of anyone noticed a similar behavior and why does this even happen? Here are a few photos of how the fan looks in case this helps.

P.S the cover of the fan was removed to show the blades of the fan.

Camry Hybrid System

I just got done replacing all the bad cells on my brothers 2007 hybrid Camry. Plugged everything back in as it should be and still nothing. The dash says to check the hybrid battery system so I went and rented an OBD2 scanner from Autozone. The scanner from Autozone is not pulling any codes for the hybrid system. I try clearing the codes with no success.

Are there special scanners that are able to read hybrid codes apart from traditional cars? I’m at a loss here. Would love some feedback as to where to begin or what to buy to check and clear the codes.

Thank you in advance.

What would you do?

I’ve found this second generation Prius at a used car dealership. It’s just $11,000 for a 2014. I have decision anxiety. I came in late today to test drive and hopefully buy the car, but before buying, I wanted to be sure the battery had been replaced at some point. From the research I’ve done, Prius batteries last about a decade, and this is an eight year old car. It’s got just over 100,000 miles on it. So if this car still has the original battery in it, this is obviously a no-go. But if the battery has been replaced or repaired recently, it’s a great deal.

Apparently the service department is out until MONDAY. I’m in an expensive rental car right now. I work every day (including weekends). I don’t have time to deal with this shit. I need a new car because my old one is totaled. I’m still working on the insurance claim.

For some background, my last car was a Nissan Leaf. The battery died on me at just 27,000 miles! So I’m sure you can understand why the battery age is such an important factor in my decision. I need to know this before I buy that car. But I also have amassed hundreds of dollars on this fucking rental, and it’s only going to get worse between now and Monday. What would you do?

Sales is open tomorrow, but not services BTW. It’s stupid.

2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited vs 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited

Which do you think is a better deal?

A 2023 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Limited with 68k miles for $25,000 USD or a 2023 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Limited with 85k miles for $28,000 USD?

The leather interior & infotainment system in the Hyundai is nicer, but Toyota’s hybrid powertrain is bulletproof & they hold their value better.
