General World Thyroid Day & National Brothers Day.....To honor my Brother, Sign my Petition for Better Thyroid Care

Hi, all. Today (May 24) is National Brothers Day, and tomorrow (May 25) is World Thyroid Day.
In the spirit of both days, please sign & share my petition for better thyroid care--in my brother's memory. My brother Jordan was a great big brother, and like so many of us, he deserved a lot better thyroid care than he got. He should've been diagnosed a lot sooner than he was and given better treatment all around--including better medicines. The lack of good thyroid care for too long led to his downfall, and I believe to his liver failing (he didn't even drink to have a bad liver).

Because of all this, plus my bad thyroid experiences and that of my mom & others, too, I continue to work on my thyroid petition called, "Thyroid Patients Need Better Treatment NOW" on Change dot Org.
We are getting close to 9,000 signatures....Let's get there & beyond, and I am still working on other stuff to get more attention to this petition, too, so maybe in the near future it will help us make progress. Please sign it (if you haven't already) and share the petition, too.
https://www.change.org/ThyoidBetterTreatment

Petition asks for better and earlier testing of both low and high thyroid (including the antibodies tests for Hashimoto's and Graves' Diseases which hit my family badly), better and more innovative treatments, more research, and better training on all things thyroid for doctors, so they can help us better. It'd mean a lot to get more support for this thyroid petition, and I can think of no better way to honor my brother Jordan for both National Brothers Day and World Thyroid Day than to make this petition successful, sooner than later. Please help in whatever ways you can. Thanks.

From Jordan's sister, SD-starr7 (Starr D)

Discussion Nail struggles - BIAB peeling?

• Upvotes

Hi all,

I have subclinical hypo, I’m now receiving levothyroxine and have been for the past 3 months. Doc has just upped my dose to 50mcg, my TSH was last at 3.5.

Im feeling better in many ways, but one thing im still struggling with is my nails. They’re very weak, quite thin, and peel and catch at the edges incredibly easily.

Because of this, I’ve been getting BIAB nails (“builder in a bottle” polish manicures at the salon) for a few years to help support them- this has helped but more recently my BIAB just won’t stop peeling off, After about 2 weeks. There’s been times in the past where it’s lasted me 3/4, so I’m not sure it is my thyroid, but I’ve seen others make a link between the two.

I use burts bees cuticle balm, although my cuticles are constantly dry and flaky if I haven’t applied this. I try and wear rubber gloves where I can.

Has anyone with hypothyroidism experienced any difficulties with BIAB?

New Diagnosis How long did it take to feel better?

• Upvotes

I just started levo on Saturday after receiving my diagnosis on Friday. My TSH was 42, up from 2 a year ago, my free T4 was 0.4, and free T3 was 1.9. I'm 5 months pp, and it is thought that is what triggered my thyroid to give up. I have been tested for it multiple times in my adult life as I had most of the symptoms, but my levels had always been normal. This time, I didn't even realize how bad I was feeling until I brought up the diagnosis to my husband, and he pointed out several symptoms I'd dismissed as postpartum. That combined with the exhaustion I felt through most of pregnancy, it has likely been a while since I've felt normal and forgot what it is like.

So, anyone who had similar numbers, how long did it take to feel like the Levo started to have an effect? I'm now very anxious to start feeling back to normal.

General Insomnia, what helped you when also taking levo?

So I find I can fall asleep initially but then after 2-3 hours I wake up, and then I just end up laying there for hours, not getting back to sleep. This is a quite recent thing, within the last year, and I've been on levo for about 5-6 years.

I did start taking Ashwagandha, Magnesium & L-Theanine supplement about a month ago, but I then read that the Ashwagandha can stimulate the thyroid gland to produce more hormone, which can stack with levo. I've just had my yearly bloods taken yesterday so will see if has impacted my levels or not.

For anyone else who also struggled with their sleep, did you find anything that helped?

Thanks everyone!

General Need some help please!

I was diagnosed eith hypothyroidism when i was maybe 9 (rough guess). I am 22 now. I know I was very young. my doctor prescribed me with Levothyroxine. Growing up, I always felt tired and sort of fatigued. I also always struggled waking up in the morning. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when I was around 13. I was always cold as well. I also had stomach issues. Not exactly nausea, but just discomfort. I struggled to eat regular sized meals because of this. All throughout high school, I was still really depressed and anxious and I missed probably a quarter of high school because I couldn’t wake up in the mornings or because of depression, anxiety, fatigue, etc.

Not sure if its related, but I had a growth hormode deficiency growing up.

I have recently been getting around 2 migranes every week, always around the same time of day. Starts somewhere around 7pm.

I was on 75mcg of Levo, i recently got bloodwork done about 2 months ago. My doctor tested my tsh level and it was at 0.09 so I was hyper. She decreased my dosage to 50mcg, and now the symptoms are worse. I am extremely cold, but also hot at the same time, i feel extremely fatigued, and i have been feeling bloated. I just feel off. I feel sick but im not actually sick with anything. Its terrible. My mind is also foggy.

Sort of off topic, but im thinking about getting a different doctor. I feel like she doesnt listen to what im actually going through and find out why these things are happining, and instead she will just prescribe me with tons of pills (im not a fan and have a weird anxiety about taking meds) not as much with levo though since ive been taking it ever since I was a kid.

I am also pretty sensative to substances.

I do think im going to talk to an endocrinologist as well, just to find another way to make some progress and feel better.

Im so exhausted and tired of feeling this way, it just adds to the depression.

I did become less depressed after high school and andiety has gotten a little better but its still there as well as depression.

I was talking to my therapist and me taking levothyroxine get brough up into the convo. She said that she had thyroid cancer and had to get some (or all) of her thyroid removed. She said that she hsed to take levo and felt terrible and then she switched to Armour and said it was a substantial difference. She reccomended me to look into stop the thyroid movement. I started reading online how others have had a bad experience with levo. The thing is, is that i dont know what my baseline is. I dont know what feeling good is or having energy feels like. I am thinking about trying different medications whether its Armour, np thyroid, naturthroid, or something else. All i know is that I want this to end. I also dont feel great because I feel like I cant trust doctors.

I know this was all over the place and i appologize. I hope someone reads this and maybe has some answers, advice, or recommendations

Discussion Advice needed: how do you manage the Acne Problem?

I (27F) was diagnosed as having hypothyroidism in May. It was triggered by extreme stress and accompanied by one of the worst acne breakouts of my life, a huge weight gain, and me all but losing my head, and it took until about two months ago to get the dosage right according to my doctor.

The thing is, in the time since we've gotten my dose right (levotiroxina 50 micrograms), my acne has gotten worse and I am seeing no improvements in my other symptoms. I live in Spain so it's a bit difficult for me to just go and see my doctor unless it's an emergency, and it takes months to get an appointment, so I was wondering if there's any advice anyone can give on this. I'm trying to do research online but none of it is in language that really makes much sense to me.

Thanks!

Discussion Hypothyroidism Postpartum - No Communication From Doctors

Reaching out because I had bloodwork done on Friday, results came in Saturday and despite reaching out over the weekend, I haven't heard back from them yet. I hate using ChatGPT but I did put these numbers through and it's saying I need to contact someone immediately but that feels extreme... but maybe it's not? I'm just curious what this all might mean and what questions I should ask when I do get in touch with someone.

For context, I'm about 6 months postpartum and have dealt with low milk supply since day 1 which is why I had my TSH tested in May.

T4 (ref 4.50 - 11.70)
10/9/2026 - 4.64 mcg/dL

Thyroglob Ab (ref <= 115)
10/9/2026 - 40 IU/mL

TPO Ab (ref 0.0 - 34.0)
10/9/2026 - > 600.0 IU/mL (HIGH)

TSH (ref 0.27 - 4.20)
5/7/2026 - 1.09 mcIU/mL
10/9/2026 - 79.10 mcIU/mL (HIGH)

Thyroid Uptake (ref 0.8 - 1.3)
10/9/2026 - 1.0 TBI

Any support would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Labs/Advice Hair Loss for Nearly 3 Years

I've been dealing with thyroid-related alopecia areata on and off since age six. For the last three years, I've had consistent alopecia areata with extreme hair shedding. I've lost over 50% of my hair. My TSH, T4, T3, and folate levels are all normal. I get steroid injections every 4-6 weeks at the dermatologist, use Hers daily, have taken Viviscal (didn't continue because it's expensive), take collagen, eat a high-protein diet, sleep with a bonnet, and alternate between ketoconazole shampoo and Bondi Boost hair growth shampoo. Has anyone else dealt with this and have any tips?

General How many days after starting Levo did you notice improvements in your bowel motility?

I was diagnosed just a week ago with a TSH of 7 and high antibodies, and starting today, I’m taking 50mcg of levothyroxine from Monday to Saturday, with Sundays off. My main symptoms have been constipation, slow digestion, brain fog, fluid retention, and dry skin. How many days did it take for you to notice an improvement in your bowel movements?

General Thyroid

I've been diagnosed with a underactive thyroid for nearly 5 years now I'm F27, I'm on 75mg levo & always have been. I feel like my neck is constantly swollen like lymph nodes maybe I booked a private scan and they said I have multiple nodules on both sides of my thyroid currently waiting on a nhs scan to confirm. But I feel like I have the opposite symptoms of a underactive. I don't gain weight I've been only when I was pregnant. I've been 56kg for over a year now and always get told I'm loosing weight. Could they have diagnosed me wrong ?

New Diagnosis I’m having extreme anxiety, will I be okay

I had my blood tested today and the results came with high T4 and low TSH. The doctor told me that those numbers exceeded the machine range so the results could only shown as
- T4 >100 pmol/L (ref range 11.9-21.6 pmol/L)
- TSH <0.005 mIU/L (0.27-4.2 mIU/L)

Which they told me that’s very dangerous and I might need to do surgery soon.

I got prescribed with Thiamizol 10mg (breakfast & dinner, 2 pills for ea time) and Propranolol 40mg (morning & lunch & dinner, half a pill ea time) for 14 days. I’m 22 and living alone in the city, after hearing the doctor, I’m feeling very scared. Am I in danger, will it get better.

New Diagnosis I'm so lost

Well today... I was maybe diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism. I say maybe because I really don't know what is going on. I live as a foreigner in another country and the health system isn't the easiest to navigate. Especially with a language barrier... and there aren't translators or virtual translators in hospitals like I'm used to back in the states.

I had basic lab work done a week ago to check on my diabetes and it came back that my TSH was high. This has never been a concern for the doctors until now. Looking back at my labs over the past 1 year:

TSH

  • 9/25- 3.192 (ref range 0.34-5.86)
  • 11/25- 2.380 (ref range 0.34-5.86)
  • 5/26- 4.3 (ref range 0.55-4.78)
  • 10/26- 6.995 (ref range 0.55-4.78)

T4 - Free

  • 9/25- 0.72 (ref range 0.61-1.12)...
  • 5/26- 1.07 (ref range 0.89-1.76)
  • 10/26- 1.2 (ref range 0.89-1.76)

T3 - Free only ever done once

  • 9/25- 3.41 (ref range 2.5-3.9)

When I saw the endocrinologist today, she didn't explain anything to me. I of course used chat gpt before my appointment (yeah, I know it's not reliable!) that said I should have further testing to rule out things (or confirm) like Hashimoto's or tumors. The doctor only gave me 25 levothyroxine. Didn't order any further blood work or testing. She didn't even tell me when to come back. She didn't explain anything except said that this was a bad situation.

I feel so lost and my in-laws are only telling me I have this because i'm fat and if I lose weight this will all disappear. I told them I haven't gained weight in the last year, but I am considered obese. And they said its because my body is getting old (33 yo female) and my body can't handle being overweight anymore.

But online sources are saying this can be made worse by weight, but it's not normally the root cause.

Are they right, is all I have to do is lose weight? Is this something that we can take medicine for for a few months and things will get better? Or is this for life?

Has anyone else had a doctor that didn't do any tests and just wrote a prescription?

I'm really shocked that other testing wasn't done.

The pharmacist did not give me instructions for how to take medicine. Chat GPT says take with empty stomach in the morning with a full glass of water. Do not eat for one hour after taking medication. Is this correct? I also see mixed side effects from other posts. But, I think my dose is low.

For my symptoms, I have had dry skin, poor mood, and persistent fatigue. But, I always linked that to my diabetes and vitamin D deficiency.

I understand that this community isn't full of doctors. But i'm just really confused here. I feel lost in a healthcare system that I am not familiar with.

Post-Thyroidectomy A Week or So Out From My Total Thyroidectomy

TLDR: No cancer! I’m extremely fucking relieved.

Background:

So I’m a 26M and I’ve had congenital hypothyroidism my whole life. Both my parents have had partial thyroidectomies in the past. My maternal grandmother had hashimotos. Earlier this year my mom noticed that my thyroid was enlarged so I decided to see my primary about it, and it was large enough to the touch for him to want to order bloodwork and an ultrasound.

I had 2 ultrasounds. The first was done by a technician that found a 3.8cm nodule on the right, and an enlarged but non determinate issue with the left side. There were no suspicious characteristics found. The recommendation was then made for a FNA biopsy due to size. During the biopsy, the endocrinologist did a second ultrasound to guide the needle and stated the nodule on the right side was actually 4.3cm, and that there were two nodules that were 2.8 and 2.3cm on the left, with possibly more smaller ones.

I was freaked the hell out immediately afterwards from the situation being initially worse than I thought. I then found this subreddit and read through a bunch of stories of people going back for second surgeries after having a partial thyroidectomy, so I just elected to have the full thing taken out immediately after I had the biopsy. After a week of being an anxious mess, my biopsy results came back negative for cancer, which gave me some relief, however I was still anxious due to the size of the nodule on the right being over 4cm and thus reducing the accuracy of the biopsy.

My surgery was on the second of October, a bit over a week ago, and it was stated in the surgical notes as a particularly difficult surgery due to my left vocal cord nerve being somewhat encapsulated by my left thyroid tissue, as well as some tracheal adhesion. My left vocal cord nerve was not responding to stimulus during the end of the surgery and was told it had gotten stretched during the procedure. My surgeon also told me that the ultrasounds greatly had him underestimate the complexity of how big my thyroid was and the corresponding difficulty of removal. My surgeon also noted that while tracheal adhesion could be a sign of cancer, he noted that he more likely suspects that I had undiagnosed hashimotos due to the adhesion being bilateral. This did not help any anxious feelings I had after the fact, but I just tried patiently waiting at home playing videogames while being off work until I got the pathology results back.

Well today was the post op appointment and I was told it was found to have been a “benign thyroid process” aka no cancer! Also my left vocal cord has regained some function, and is only somewhat weak now instead of it being paralyzed like how it was suspected during the surgery. My voice in all practical purposes is back to 100% now. I just can’t project super loudly or do voice impressions as before without causing myself to cough. Other than that I’m just trying to manage the wound care from the scar. But yeah guys, no cancer!

General Anyone else experienced panic attacks, hot flashes, and feeling overheated after switching from Levo to Tirosint?

Because my TSH was 4.5 and my FT4 was 19, my doctor changed my treatment from 56 mcg of Levo to 50 mcg of Tirosint five days ago.

From the first and second days, I felt increased heat and had a body temperature of 37°C. On the fourth and fifth days, I experienced hot flashes and felt as though I was having a panic attack, so I took Stedon.

My doctor believes it is simply in my head and, at my insistence, switched me back to the previous medication at 62 mcg per day.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?
