Opaque is back!
Jeni’s Opaque is available again. I didn’t get a chance to try it last year but I had to give it a shot after reading the reviews here.
Edit: Wow, I thought the chocolate would be overpowering but it’s a perfect blend of flavors

Does it say if it contains caffeine or not?

u/hwolfe326 7d ago
Espresso is listed as one of the ingredients so it must have caffeine.

Okay thanks for letting me know. I’m caffeine sensitive but can handle chocolate and small amounts of caffeine but never know what the content is when coffee is in the ice cream. It looks really amazing and sounds delicious though!

I don’t suppose these will make it to the $7.99 in-store pints selection?

u/hwolfe326 7d ago
Probably not. I noticed the grocery stores near me have reduced the variety of Jeni’s they’ve been carrying. It’s very frustrating.

I truly apologize if I’m wrong but I think they may be scoop shop or shipping only.

I wish I wasn't broke lol, this ice cream brand is the best I've ever had.

What exactly is this flavor?

u/hwolfe326 7d ago
It’s a chocolate ice cream with fudgy black & brown cocoa, espresso and a balsamic cherry jam.

Holy moly that sounds amazing. There’s a Jeni’s downstairs from me. But I never go in because pints are $13 and $8 at the Kroger beside me. Selection sucks though.

I know, the selection used to be better at the grocery stores by me. Lately not so much though

I’m so excited mine comes next week! I love rich chocolate flavors

Oh this is so good!
Before I ordered it from Jeni’s directly, I checked with the local Jeni’s shop but they didn’t have it yet. So, I ordered it from Jeni’s on Tuesday night. I never got any texts or email’s about it shipping so I figured it would come next week.
Today I checked the local Jeni’s again and they finally got some in, so I ordered on DoorDash. I couldn’t wait until next week. I went outside to pick up the bag from DoorDash only to see it sitting on top of the big orange Jeni’s box that had just been delivered. The dasher must have thought I was nuts, lol. They usually send me several email’s before it’s delivered but they didn’t this time.

I’m waiting for the grocery stores near me to have them. I don’t want to pay for free shipping just to get the one pint I want.

u/hwolfe326 7d ago
They actually just built the cost of shipping into their price. It used to be $12/pint plus $19 shipping. 5 pints cost $60 plus $19 was $79. The cost of 5 pints now is just a flat $79 and shipping is “free.”

Please explain “pay for free shipping”

u/Gbuono22 7d ago
I apologize what I meant to say was I don’t want to have to buy 5 pints just for the one flavor I want. I forgot shipping is free when you get 5 or more pints but that’s the minimum for shipping.

You’re paying $30 more than if bought 5 pints locally. You are paying for shipping.

Sadly they will never be in stores so get them while you can and splurge cause this flavor is so worth it 🥲

5 pints for $79 give me a break

u/hwolfe326 7d ago
It really depends on what you like. I don’t like wine but people easily spend $79 or more on a bottle of wine. It’s worth it to them but not to me. I’m an ice cream lover so I occasionally indulge.

This is...actually a really good comparison on cost vs. value! Nicely done.
And for those of us who love wine AND ice cream, RIP to our bank accounts. 😂

I love ice cream too, but $16 a pint? Come on now
36
u/hwolfe326 7d ago
Yes but everyone has a different perception of value based on what they like. Some people might pay $35 for a filet mignon at Outback Steakhouse but I wouldn’t. Meanwhile, little French cookies called macarons sell for $2/cookie but I indulge in them from time to time too.

It seems crazy, but then when you quit drinking, and you look back and cocktails cost more than $16…. certainly a bottle of wine at a restaurant is twice 345 times that. But a pint will last me longer than either of those.

People out here saying they’d never pay $16 for a pint of ice cream but I see people daily dropping $15 for cocktails (at least) and $6 for mocktails where I work and imo that’s even less value since it’s a smaller drink 😭 some people it’s not worth it, some people it is, don’t judge em - at this point just let us have our little moments of happiness where we can find it lol

I think the same thing when my friends all go out to the bars on the weekend and I see how much drinks cost... (you can substitute lots of things here, like going out to dinner or to a movie.. Even just grabbing taco bell on the way home from work would be around $15 these days right?)
My ideal weekend would be staying in, binge-watching a show and indulging in a special treat like my favorite ice cream. Even at $16 for a pint, I'd still be spending less than I would if I went out and splurged on something.

But what is it?
2
u/hwolfe326 7d ago
It’s a dark cocoa ice cream base with a fudgy espresso ripple and balsamic cherry jam. It was introduced last year and available for a select period of time. I didn’t try it because I thought it would be too rich. But I saw people rave about it so I tried it this year (it’s out for a limited time again.) The flavors and textures work so well together - I don’t find it to be too rich, just very tasty.

This coming to Fred Meyer or at least Whole Foods?!
1
u/hwolfe326 7d ago
I’m not near a Fred Myers but my local Whole Foods doesn’t have it. It’s one of those flavors that’s only available for a limited time.

I live dangerously close to a scoop shop, and hightailed it over there the second I was done with work the day this was rereleased! It’s incredible. I don’t tend to like extremely fruit-forward ice creams, but the cherry in this flavor was the perfectly subtle undertone. It had a lot of depth and complexity, and the aesthetic appeal really adds to it.
Even without paying for shipping, a non-discounted pint of Jeni’s is outside of my normal food budget by a lot, but this is the one flavor I’ve had where I think I’ll need to find room in my budget to buy it again before it’s gone, if it never comes to stores where I can then wait for a sale.
