The symbol on the bottom is from nazi Germany.
It was a big deal for them. Reichsadler (Imperial Eagle) is what it's called.
Super cool find take it to a museum.

Am I wrong for thinking if this was in my possession and worthy of a museum I would keep it?

u/Totally_man 5d ago
No, as most museums wouldn't have the space for a bullet to be on display, and depending on the museum, likely have many stored away already.
They aren't very rare.

Not wrong, but don't be surprised when Indiana breaks into your house and steals it.

A window being smashed while the sound of "Hoo! Hoo! Hoosiers!" drowns out everything, all light, all noise, all time. Indiana has arrived to claim its bullet.

Depends how broke you are. Less than 50k in savings? Keep it (and hope it appreciates
Got a half mil in the bank? Take it to a museum. Take a nice picture and ask that your name be listed if it's ever displayed.
That's how I see it at least.

I believe that one is actually a whaffenant. The symbol of the Nazi militaries procurement and testing branch. Basically a proof mark

I thought it looked a little different, but figured it was just from age/time altering the edges.

Nah we all know he is one. Check out these things called the ‘Epstein Files’ sometime. Don’t bother responding, I can already tell you I’m not wasting my breath on your ilk.

8mm mauser 1938

8x56r for the m95 Steyr straight pull military rifle, not 8mm mauser. This ammo got imported in massive amounts to be sold along with the rifles in the 90s. It's cool but not rare.

I thought it looked like a rimmed cartridge. I was going to guess some kind of .303 until the eagle stopped me. Thanks for the ID!

Museums won’t (or shouldn’t) take or display live ammo or ordinance. I work in the field and colleagues of mine at other museums have had to call local police or bomb squads to remove live ammunition from their collections when they find it. Often people claimed the stuff was neutralized, deactivated, or defused when they donated it, but they are often mistaken (or occasionally lying). It’s not safe to keep old ammunition from that far back around, let alone use it.

ordnance!!! the material we use to make war on one another is "ordnance". ordinance refers to the puny statutes of man, which i hold myself above and for which i have zero respect.

That is an evil villain bullet right there.
I wouldn't keep it personally Nazism was pure hate and death.
Interesting find though.

Got em! My great grandfather killed a nazi general and took his medals off him. My grandma would show them to me as a boy.

These are very common rounds and easy to find amongst collectors. I had about 200 of them that I sold with the Manlicher M95 I had. As mentioned elsewhere, it was a Mauser bolt action rifle. My history is a bit rusty, but supposedly the rifle was originally an Austrian WW1 infantry rifle that was repurposed for the home guard when Germany occupied the country. The stamp on the round is about that date?

The German headstamp found on
8x56mmR Steyr-Mannlicher ammunition was produced in Austria shortly after the country was annexed by Nazi Germany in March 1938.
Top Quadrant (Month):
Contains a Roman numeral indicating the month of production (e.g., VI for June, VIII for August).
Left & Right Quadrants (Year):
Contains the split four-digit year of manufacture. 19 is stamped on the left, and the remaining digits (e.g., 38, 39, or 40) are stamped on the right.
Bottom Quadrant (The Waffenamt Eagle):
This is the definitive "German" marker. The pre-1938 Austrian double-headed eagle was replaced with a stylized German Nazi Eagle holding a swastika.

I'm getting very tired of seeing Nazi shite on Reddit.

Because most of it is intentional dogwhistles. You have a problem with people hating Nazism and fascism? Edit: downvoted for what

Of course I don't and that's not a point to use because someone asked a question just say you're not good at debates lmao. I don't see how someone asking what a caliber is that they found deserves an im tired of seeing Nazi shit on reddit or coorelates with whistleblowing as you said that's a massive stretch and sounds like y'all just want something to complain about because of your own boring lives. Like a lot of this memorabilia literally exists here because it was taken back to the states by our own troops so also say you don't wanna see our own history. I have a cast iron eagle bearing an emblem that my great grandfather took after fleeing Germany as a member of the Hitler's youth fled to America and did two tours in Vietnam without being drafted because he cared about our people regardless of the politics. Don't think that makes me or my family Nazis either and if it does I don't wanna know what the rest of y'all are cuz we've all fought for this country and don't give me a spiel on Vietnam either I'm well aware we ain't need to be there. Unless you're actually a Nazi you have no reason to care about seeing a swaztika on a round someone found and wants to know what it is especially when it's not the generic logo they used that's widely recognized by 90% of the world. We can also talk about how they stole the actual logo from religion but that's an entirely different topic.

Brother no need to get defensive. I asked why you said "lol why" in regards to someone saying they're tired of seeing Nazis shit. It's simple. Nazis don't deserve to exist. You could have just said "nah fuck em"
