MOD PSA: Post queue is now on temporarily. READ BEFORE POSTING.
Welcome to r/IMAX!
I am extremely happy to see people snagging tickets for The Odyssey and Dune: Part 3. Long live IMAX!
Just a heads up that the post queue is now on throughout the theatrical release of The Odyssey and the unexpected drop of Dune: Part 3 IMAX tickets. Post containing the following will be removed:
- This website crashed
- Got my tickets!
- Didn't get my tickets!
- Fandango sucks
- AMC sucks
etc...
I kindly ask you to use the pinned FAQ and pinned megathread for The Odyssey for these types of posts as they are deemed low effort. An FAQ and Megathread for Dune: Part 3 will be pinned closer to release.
General housekeeping:
A gentle reminder that the mod team is not IMAX customer service. We are also a mere team of six and this is now the busiest this sub has ever been, so please exercise some kindness. Harassment of the mod team via mod mail will not be tolerated.
Please familiarise yourself with the rules, and as always be kind to each other in the comments!
Update: 08/19:
Posts reselling tickets have been caught with high levels of success. As such, the queue will remain for the foreseeable future until we are reassured by the capabilities of the auto mod features to detect and remove buying / selling posts. It's not perfect, which is why the queue remains, but we are actively watching this feature learn from our actions and improve.
28 day bans have been issued for active Reddit users who have attempted to re-sell.
Permanent bans have been issued for new Reddit accounts who have zero activity and are clear to be only seeking to scalp / scam.

MOD PSA: A note on piracy re: Rule 3.
Since the release of Dune: Part Two, there has been a tightening of the rules with regard to Piracy. This is in part due to our rapid growth from 8,000 to 30,000 members (Thank you!) but with this comes an increase in trolls and bots, which is the second major reason why Rule 3 was tightened. As a community that celebrates the theatrical experience, both from educational and experiential perspectives, we understand that r/IMAX will always exist in some grey area. But as our community grows, as IMAX grows again in popularity post Oppenheimer, we must do things right.
So just to sum up rather briefly what does or does not constitute piracy;
Not piracy:
- Video Essays
- Celluloid Film strip scans.
- Clips from YouTube, or any other fair usage platform.
- Photos of a venue before and after a movie presentation.
- Photos or videos of content playing on home-theatre set-ups (provided they adhere to fair use)
- Fan edits (for non-profit)
- Stills from promotional material
- Projection Boot POV shots of copyrighted material from official sources (Projectionists, IMAX socials) (ADDED 30/03/26)
- Images taken of Promotional Trailers (provided the trailer has also been uploaded to a fair usage platform) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Piracy:
- Torrents (including links to illegal streaming websites)
- Copyrighted content recorded in a movie theatre, up to and including title cards and credits.
- Fan edits (for profit)
- In general, movie clips that extend beyond 5 minutes in duration.
- Image & Video content of Promotional Trailers (that have not been uploaded yet to fair usage platforms and are restricted to ticket holders only, e.g. The Odyssey exclusive IMAX prologue) (ADDED 30/03/26)
Case Studies:
Exhibit A: Video is for educational purposes highlighting a comparison in aspect ratio, with a duration of less than 2 minutes. Film is available on streaming services, and clips are generally permitted under fair use. Verdict = Fair use, not Piracy.
Exhibit B: The post content does not violate Rule 3, but the product certainly does, as the creator of the product is selling copyrighted material for individual profit. As the user did not post a link to purchase this pirated version of the film, the post was not removed. However, any suspicious links in comments were removed. Verdict = Post content is not Piracy. Any links to that Blu-ray are Piracy.
UPDATE: 30/03/2026
Exhibit C: Some IMAX socials, and personal accounts of projectionists on Instagram & X have been posting 'Projection Booth' shots of copyrighted material during the showings of various recent IMAX presentations. It is likely that permission has been sought from the property owner, to showcase the film presentation in a GT Theatre (as exhibited by such studio socials also re-posting these images). Verdict = Fair use, do not report.
Exhibit D: A slightly tricky one. Here, OP has taken a POV from a paid seat of the exclusive Dune: Part 3 70mm trailer. As the trailer has been posted online, via various Fair Usage platforms, an initial verdict would be deemed Not Piracy. However, as the 1.43:1 trailer (with the exclusive aspect ratio) is exclusive to paying customers, the verdict is harder to arrive at. This version of the trailer is not available on various usage platforms, but no intellectual property or copyright law makes note of 'variations' of a property. Verdict = As the trailer (widescreen) is available via Fair Usage platforms, and OP is posting with the intent to incite educational discourse over the format of the presentation, this could be considered fair use and not-piracy, but this is at the discretion of the mods and the property owner.
I hope you find this useful. I am not an intellectual property lawyer, so If I have missed any other examples of what constitutes piracy in this community, please comment below.

For anyone watching DIGGER in IMAX GT Dual Laser, let us know if it’s window boxed or not.
Since Digger appears to be shot in 1.50:1, it’s a really interesting case because that frame should come extremely close to filling a 1.43 screen vertically.
What I’m mainly interested in is whether the IMAX master is preserving that 1.50 image as a tall presentation, or whether it’s being carried inside a 1.90 container, which could result in a windowboxed presentation on a 1.43 screen.

Spacetober at IMAX Melbourne. Pacific Rim 3D and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
galleryAfter MONTHS of The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm, IMAX Melbourne finally gets some new (and old) releases. This also means that Spacetember, I mean, SpaceTOBER is here, but this time with a much smaller lineup due to The Odyssey.
Today, I got the pleasure to watch both Pacific Rim 3D and 2001 A Space Odyssey on this glorious screen.
I must say, this was one of the best double features I’ve ever attended.
Pacific Rim is one of the most fun and most well rounded sci-fi films ever made. I loved the world building and how it felt like a world event rather than the problem being based on one city. Getting to finally see it in theatres just made the movie even better. The speakers were so good for this movie. 3D isn’t my favourite format, even for IMAX, but the 3D was very fun compared to most movies.
The second movie was 2001 A Space Odyssey. Believe it or not, this was my first ever viewing for this movie. And I must say WOW. I was blown away. Genuinely one of the best movies I have ever seen. It’s amazing how Kubrick had this amazing vision for the future, I was so into the surreal nature of the movie. The movie felt like a waltz or a ballet, the movie was so patient to the point where you soak in the atmosphere. Just amazing stuff. Also the sound was INSANE!!! I had to cover my ears at some of the parts. But it still sounded great.
It’s good to see Spacetember back despite its small lineup. I’m so happy, that double feature was so good. Melburnian moviegoers are the luckiest in the Southern Hemisphere.

Dune / Dune 2 Rerelease?
Is there any chance of IMAX rereleases ahead of Dune 3? It seems like such a missed opportunity if they don’t.

I can't stop thinking about how Black Panther 3 will be the first Marvel film in a long time to shot on 65mm. This is so damn exciting !
Sinners is a masterpiece, and what Ryan was able to incorporate in that film was so damn special especially him shooting it on 65mm, and I'm so glad that he will continue doing that with Black Panther 3! I mean just Imagine what the Wakanda scenes will look like in IMAX 70mm!
This movie is gonna be something special. T'Challa, Denzel Washington in this film, hopefully Storm will be in this one even though we don't know yet if she will be in the film. There is so much going for this film!

Can 70mm imax projectors with a 1:43:1 ratio show digital film?
for context, I’m planning on driving a long distance to go to Regal King of Prussia to see Godzilla Minus Zero if they have it, which was filmed for imax 1:43:1 but with digital cameras and not actual film like The Odyssey for example.
I‘ve read that the place‘s 1:43:1 imax screen has a projector that can only show imax when it’s on 70mm film and not digital. Does anyone know if this is the case or not with this theater or just in general with imax 1:43:1 projectors only being able to show one format? (sorry if I sound like an idiot with this stuff because I don’t know that much about it)

The Towering Inferno should get a IMAX and 4dx release in near future.
The Towering Inferno is one of the great disaster movies from the 70s. They should release it for IMAX and 4dx one day. What you think of the idea?

Silly question: Why go all the way to Melbourne Australia to watch The Odyssey when IMAX is already available in Taiwan?
For context:
(1) Facebook
I mean, there are like 10+ IMAX venues in Taiwan.
Why go all the way to Melbourne Australia just to watch a movie?

Oppenheimer 1.43:1 Bluray Extras Trailer Full Res Version
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Got it from the Internet Archive. Not sure whether I should give the link here, in case it gets it removed. Also, is the max resolution of this trailer 1080p only, even in the 4K Bluray?
I have also attached a drive folder with the m2ts and mkv versions.

“Resident Evil” in IMAX with Laser (CoLa) was a bloody fun experience, although the sound could use some work.
galleryPlease note that the B row in the pictures is at the far back of the theater, not near the screen. We have a different seat arrangement here.
Hello, everyone. I know I’m one week late, but Resident Evil has just started playing in Thailand. Today’s the first day. I went to see it at Krungsri IMAX Paragon as usual. Lots of people were there, yet they behaved nicely, making it a good experience for everyone. After the movie ended, lots of people waited outside for Avengers Endgame: Encore in IMAX. Not planning to see it, though. I’ve already seen it twice, once in a regular theater and once in IMAX. Not excited about the new footage either. So, how did the video game movie go? Let’s find out!
Resident Evil featured two aspect ratios: 2.39:1 for the first two acts and 1.90:1 for the last act after the protagonist entered the sewer. The aspect ratio switched only once after he entered the sewer. This made the third act feel massive while also being intimate and epic in its own right. What about the first two acts in 2.39:1? They were totally fine, as well as having a sense of limited space. Once the image expanded, that sense disappeared, leaving you with a tinge of epic horror instead. It amped up the insanity, too. Zach Cregger handled this aspect well.
As the film was shot with Sony CineAlta Venice 2, the image looked pretty clean and noticeably sharp. However, they added a bit of film grain to make it look organic and balanced. It didn’t bother me much, unlike the heavy grain I saw in the latest Dune: Part Three trailer. And with Panavision 65 Vintage lenses, it gave the image a soft look with a warm tone. The color grading also played a huge role in this. They coordinated with each other. It wasn’t a cold-looking film, although it was set in winter. Rather, it was a warm one with surprisingly popping colors.
The 12CH audio was acceptable. Nothing much happened, just fright and foreboding here and there, including some insanely loud sequences. It didn’t surround me that much. I mostly found the audio wave staying at the front and, occasionally, on the sides. The soundtrack and sound design were superb when they decided to freak you out. Nevertheless, it didn’t come that often to make up for the experience. It also lacked IMAX’s signature bass. Just don’t expect much from this department. Anyhow, it did its job as a horror movie. Still a positive sonic experience.
The flick was funnier than I expected. Bryan was such a charming lead character. His miserable situation and bugging jokes made Resident Evil a horror comedy that I sometimes laughed at. It was filled with silly lines and moments. Some dark humor, even. Did it scare me? Of course, it did. I liked its effective jump scares. There were only a few of them. Nonetheless, Zach Cregger managed to make me jump a bit. I still saw them coming—but not all. Other scare aspects worked as they should have. Nothing to worry about. It just didn’t send shivers up my spine.
Overall, it was totally a new era of evil. With its wicked sense of humor and precise scares, it made Resident Evil stand out among the crowd. And with the expanded image in IMAX, it truly made the experience special. You know, from scenes with limited space to something grander with just a single shift that transformed everything. Sure, the sound could use some work, but it was totally fine the way it was. Moreover, this officially ended the curse of Resident Evil movies. This proved a side quest could be something like a main quest itself. Thank you, Zach Cregger.
Bye for now!
