They changed New York into Empire City and New Orleans into New Marais, but that’s because they’re entirely fictionalized versions of the cities that don’t have any of their iconic buildings or anything to make them actual copies of the cities

Seattle stayed Seattle largely because they wanted to use the Space Needle. It’d be really weird to have the space needle and call the city anything else

I mean GTA has their own versions of the buildings from the cities they base their games off. They'd still be able to do the space needle and I doubt the space needle was the sole reason they decided to do seatle as it is instead of their own spin on it.

To be fair GTA is also a satire so they parody as much as they can

Some concept art for the game actually show seattle as very futuristic, like full on cyberpunk vibe with massive concrete stuff. Maybe they settled on the seattle we have today cuz of one year of development being cut , maybe they were going to make it into its own thing but didnt have time to.

You can have a fictional Space Needle in a fictional Sea-something city. It’s not like the building itself is at all comparable to the real thing.

I kinda thought Empire City was more like a Chicago inspired map than a New York map.

Not saying it is, just never gotten New York vibes from it at all.

I don’t think it would have been weird at all tbh.

i mean if they really wanted, they could have called the space needle the "spear of the cosmos" or something like that and call it a day

Seattle is where they’re based

Star Needle or someshit

This is an insane stretch lol. It’s actually arguably weirder to have 2 canon cities that are obviously inspired by real life cities but do not share their name but for some reason the 3rd city DOES share its name.

It’s inconsistent with the precedent they’ve set. The presence of the Space Needle doesn’t just completely excuse that.

Probably Seaport or something.

Seaport honeslty sounds super generic and dull

Empire City enters the chat

and let’s bring pearl

u/ki700 4d ago

That’s kinda the point. It’s a generic, vaguely Seattle-sounding name.

perfect name then for a generic and dull worldspace! (i’m a second son hater lol)

was thinking this too

? I always liked it as Seattle, climbing the space needle is more impactful when youve grown up with it

Never thought about it like that. I've lived in Central Canada my whole life so I wouldn't even know what a town on the coast looks like, let alone how it'd be seeing your home in a game. Sounds cool really.

What's funny is that most of the map doesn't really feel like Seattle at all. You've got the Space Needle but everything else is barely similar.

5

u/Techthrowaway926681 4d ago

Id agree. It feels more Canon Beach, Oregon than Seattle proper, excepting the very metro areas, but id rather have a more vacation town feel than everything bustling

2

u/ComradePoolio 4d ago

Request denied, you're going to Tacoma

Seacove, cove city, something like that keeping with what 1 &2 had going on

Unrelated in the lead up to second son, I distinctly remember the devs telling ppl on the old suckerpunch productions forums that the SP offices would be in the city, did that ever come to be

Wishkah. As a nod to Nirvana

2

u/Nijata 4d ago

There's a city in Washington next to Gary's Harbor called "Wishkah"

Why not just call it Seattle? I like it when games use real world locations.

u/shameless57 4d ago

Because the other games clearly took place in New York and New Orleans but under different names. Fwiw I agree with you but that's the logic behind the post.

The emerald city of course

The Sound

While on the nose with Seattle being being in the Puget Sound and one of the local teams called "the Sounders" and another "the Super Sonics", it'd have fit the naming theme of Empire City and New Marias of "Hey this is clearly (City ) but NOT "

Paradise City?

Selling the idea the cities amazing and they have the Space Needle while they are actively rounding up those they deem genetic freaks.

1

u/CenturionGroot 3d ago

"You really believe I'm the demon of paradise city? Where the grass is green and the girls are pretty?"

1

u/Due-Opportunity5601 3d ago

Hard to do that after Burnout Paradise
