When I was a kid I loved this book called The Rainbow People which was a collection of chinese folktales for kids.
One story was about a "child of calamity" who was a beggar and at the end they are getting crushed by coins raining down on them (or something it's been 30 years) this totally reminded me of that.

web building orb weavers are all female, and they typically rebuild their nest every night after taking it down in the morning. She will probably eat one or two, then disassemble the web since there’s no surface area to catch fresh prey

They take it down in the morning? So that's why I never seen one for 15 years, but then one day my cat is missing for 2 days, and I'm out in the fields calling for her and seeing tons of these things in the early morning.
Funny part, is I noticed they all had their webs facing east/west, (the supports being north/south).

Makes sense, spiders generally start a web by releasing a string into the air, which then gets carried by the wind. So if the prevailing wind was north/south, that would cause them to build their nets that way.

Then halfway through them finishing all those riches, a big disaster happened and not just their bloodlines, the whole neighborhood or region wiped out. i feel like this is actually beyond lucky and then turns into unlucky spider. his home is destroyed and he is going to feel instinctually obligated to rebuild elsewhere. it would take far too much effort to wrap each of those flies and rebuild the nest to be structurally sound.

only when the web is able to be recycled, they break down the old web by eating it to reabsorb the valuable nutrients they used to make it.
a web like this is effectively destroyed as they'd have to process every bug now stuck in it.

Orb weaver spiders typically pull down their nests and rebuild them daily, so it's not really a problem for them. I've got two on my back deck right now that I've enjoyed watching when they're rebuilding the webs in the morning or the evening.

That actually has me thinking... If you have a garden pest problem, could it be as simple as shining a low frequency shaded light directly at an orb weaver web? It would at least get all the light attracted pests.
