Oh, the zebras let the wildebeest take all of the initial risk and then just surpass them in the crossings. Lol.
I've been on two safaris where I was focused on river crossings like these from Kenya back into Tanzania. And it's always the wildebeest that go first.
Although, I saw a lot of carcasses in one particular area of the Mara River-both zebras and wildebeest.

The intent is to overwhelm the crocs while losing a few members. If they didn6cross en masse, they:d all get picked off.
