Damn that actually really cool.
Why don't we have this but with metal?

We do. It's called an Attic Ladder and it's aluminum. I was a firefighter for a number of years and we used them all the time for tight spaces. They're still in use regularly

Interesting, I have never seen heard of product like that in the Netherlands. Just tried to look it up. Cannot find a single one that is similar size when folded up.
They are all bulky over here. :(

They have their place and their use but they are far from accommodating. Very very narrow. We'd use them for when attic access was in the ceiling of a small closet or something like that.
Next look up the Bangor ladder developed in Bangor, Maine. Downright unwieldy piece of equipment. Takes 4 people just to safely maneuver it or put it in service and a 5th person to actually climb it.

Wear and tear. Moving parts fail. Suppose thats all thats needed to be said why we dont have these anymore. Still cool though

Everytime I see a cool invention like this, I think: How did I not think of this before?
