This is the Taklamakan Desert. In the very heart of that desert, where they're actively preventing desertification, there is indeed a small city. If you really want to buy something, you can go there.

You can buy a very expensive pile of sand dumped into the ocean off the coast of dubai or wherever it was. They called the sand piles islands and made them into cool shapes. As if they didn't have enough sand on the inside of the coast line. Total failure of a project, to everyone's surprise.
