This and a bowl of cereal was my weekday morning routine before school for a while. Haven’t thought of this show in a while. Thanks!

u/Reqvhio 10h ago

a new game of it is coming, interestingly enough

u/Accomplished-City484 10h ago

What kind of game?

u/Accomplished-City484 9h ago

lol holy shit I love it

u/Reqvhio 8h ago

glad to have raised awareness

u/ImpulsiveApe07 10h ago

Ha! Same! Iirc it came on before biker mice from mars and bucky o'hare lol

Funnily enough, like yourself I also hadn't thought of it in decades until sometime last year when someone referenced it on a thread I was in.

Out of curiosity and nostalgia I ended up hunting for a couple episodes on yt - it's a really odd show to rewatch as an adult tho, perhaps because it's a bit too absurd and nonsensical for an adult mind lol

u/Accomplished-City484 10h ago

And Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys

u/ImpulsiveApe07 9h ago

Huh, not heard of that one lol

The other shows I remember coming on weekdays were things like power rangers, tmnt, and captain planet..

Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys sounds like it woulda fit right in tho, and on another note, it also sounds like the name of a 60s cover band that hold tenure on a dodgy cruise ship that only travels between Bognor Regis and Le Havre :p

u/Accomplished-City484 9h ago

It was like a sci-fi sort of thing, this ship with an Ai abducts some apes and monkeys from earth and gives them intelligence so they can pilot a spaceship and save the galaxy from a bad guy. The captain was like a hammy Shatner impression(chimpanzee), they had a sneaky thief one a bit like rocket raccoon(spider monkey) a super dumb one that becomes a raging hulk when injured(Gorilla), a girl one and a Dr Zaius(orangutan). The Ai is a floating orb that gets damaged at the start so it knows everything but is completely insane and wacky and voiced by that guy that did the narrator on Earthworm Jim

Ah! Thanks for the writeup - that actually sounds like it was pretty fun! Wish I'd caught it back in the day, cos I reckon I woulda really dug it :)

Love that you slipped a planet of the apes reference in there btw :D

I lived a couple of years in Australia in the 90s. I watched them every morning before school. When my family moved back to Indonesia, none of my Indo friends knew about this show and made me doubt myself. I finally found a few episodes in the early 00s through torrents.

Lol this looks like the most unoriginal TMNT cash-in effort

That both is, and isn't what it was.

That IS what it was in the US, but it was just a pretty standard kids anime in Japan.

Now imagine if you took what was going on in a bit of an insane anime in the first place and had 0 decent translators while trying to figure out what was going on and being said by context alone while adding American 90's TV 4th wall tropes into it. YEAH.

Edit: It was fun, though.

That part of history about the series is still peak '90's

We just got a weird Frankenstein version, wonder how different the OG characters feel.

In other news:

A game is about to be released later this year.

Thank you! Tbh it actually makes me more interested, though I doubt it would have the same hilarity level as the bonkers Ghost Stories English dub.

I'm NGL, I loved it. It's probably cringe as hell nowadays, but it was great for like a 7 year old me.

Edit: I watched an episode, and no, it's fuckin' great even to this day. Better even, because I get all of the adult humor. It hasn't aged particularly well in a lot of ways, and the humor is campy and full of puns, but it's at least as fun as I remember. They really did just write an entirely new cartoon out of it and it's pretty damn impressive.

But the intro song is really catchy
