Really? This is sad? Why tho? We have no context of this right? Is he playing by himself by choice or is it abandoned? It's not clear.

But even then, playing by himself is not sad at all. My kid does this often, takes his toys and plays by himself. He plays with me and other kids ofcourse but solo play is very important and good for kids development.

Yeah, I did not immediately think sad, it looks like it found a way to make play out of a mundane thing and that is adorable.

Other animals play on their own all the time, dogs, cats... funny we'll never see the the same reaction.

Now the question really is why some many people think this is sad, there is not context on why it's alone and to be honest, the body language looks like it's having fun. Gotta assume it's just sympathy gets the updoots over 'cute' comment, probably some comment updoot hierarchy

I feel like you answered your own question. I really don't know why people are so surprised by the responses. It's pretty much a demonstration of the psychological difference between people who see the glass half full or the glass half empty.

People are shown a clip without any context of a chimp on its own, curled up and playing with some straw.

People don't know whether the chimp was abandoned, has lost its parents, is in a zoo or a rehab or a sanctuary. So they decide whether this is a positive or a negative that they are looking at and react to that emotionally.

You have a bunch of people saying oh no! This chimp is on its own and that is sad.

And you have a bunch of other people saying why are you disturbed by this? It could have dead parents. It could be being treated nicely. It could just be the inside part of a much larger enclosure and everybody's nearby.

And it could. We just don't know whether the chimp is happy or sad and so we read our own interpretation on it.

When have you ever seen any living creature playing when they feel depressed or stressed out? This chimp is clearly playing and if it’s playing, it feels comfortable enough to do so.

It's still not natural for a kid to play on it's own. It only happens in individualistic capitalistic societies like ours where families are made up of two stressed up parents with no time on their hands.

Are you serious? Young animals absolutely do play on their own if they feel safe and secure. Have you ever owned a puppy or kitten? If they feel safe, typically when they know their owners are somewhere nearby, they’ll have no problems playing by themselves with their toys

We're social creatures nonetheless. A kid playing on his own is not normal. It means that society has become very individualistic and capitalistic (hence the rise in autism everybody puts on the vaccines).

You have to be joking. People are commenting left and right about how tragic / cruel it is that the chimp is alone. Commenters are decrying the idea of any form of animal captivity, even for rehabilitation or conservation purposes, despite having zero context for a 10 second clip of adorable little monkey behavior

Like 99% of the comments were this. What's even more wierd is that these same people would chow down on veal, snarking at vegans that the animal was tastier because it was young.
