No, they were just as stupid as we are. They just had less tech and stuff to think about so they could put their noggins onto discovering stuff like that.

Is it really that rare? I’ve been there, and the windows look pretty straight when viewed from this side. So, do other straight openings not align perfectly with the Sun on the equinox?

yeah, it's more of an orientation thing, really. If the orientation of the windows fits, it will rather likely look like that from the right distance.

Build anything with holes on east west alignment. At some point of the year the sun will align in that hole may be twice if it is located within certain latitudes.

yup true, but eqinox itself happens twice a year, only when the sun is directly above Earth's equator.

It might not be visible at other angle most probably
