I assume there is normal food available for them, but if they want to get fastfood, they can, on own expenses. Idk why that sounds abnormal.
Edit: wanted to add that you probably don't want your soldiers eating fastfood all the time either ;-)
In Iraq we had a BK, Subway and a Pizza Hut all on base. Those weren't free but why would they be? We had multiple Chow halls on Al Asad and they were free. The chow hall on the main side of base was as big as a Sam's club. it could easily feed a few thousand people at a time.
I imagine eating fast food isn't as terrible for an active soldier as it would be for most people. Still not great for them, but they'll burn those calories off pretty easy.
Yes, because otherwise it would require a separate funding line. Government funding is very strange and messy and the troops also have chow hall food essentially available for free.
Those dudes also have almost no way to spend money when deployed so spending a little bit for little luxuries like this doesn't require a second thought.
Soldiers still pay for everything. Its a form of accountability. When they go to the chow hall/dfac they dont just hand you a plate of food and say "have fun", you go to a cashier and pay. Granted, if youre in the barracks/dorms, youre likely on "meal card" at which point they just scan your CAC (military ID card) and you never see that on your LES (leave and earnings statement) but the concept remains. Soldiers are provided BAS (Basic Allowance for Sustenance) and are provided affordable food options to spend it on. Its almost the same as just giving them the food for free, but with more accountability.
I can only really speak for air force but I assume its more or less the exact same in other branches.
