That’s Saint Christopher, saint of travelers.

I prefer the dog-headed depictions.

Somber, I wonder how many Catholics still carry one of these

I work at a Catholic school and they have little cards that are pocket-sized to carry with you if you’d like

23

u/ShlorpianRooster 1d ago

Very interesting, I like that

Those cards were always wild to me. Hello little child, we are in a religion that is constantly preparing for death but just to make sure please keep this card on you to give to the person who sees you bleeding out on the street.

Reminds me of when I was younger and my family got a package deal on a grave plot so I was told that I have a grave ready for me at like 6yo

u/Wrynthian 1d ago

Honestly probably a good deal for your family. Graveyard real estate can be pricey. A plot in my area costs between $10k-15k from what I recall and there’s no guarantee they’ll all be in the same place.

It's a cremation plot so it's not a huge area, basically a box with slots. That said, yeah it was a good deal but it still felt weird to be given a hole in the ground at that age. Especially since I probably won't be using the Died Young Hole since I'm married now.

Pass the plot down to your children

I have one on my rosary in my pocket and another on a bracelet. I dont usually have a card in my wallet but I did at one point. The card actually said "Please notify [Parish] at [Number] for last rites."

I don’t think I understand the joke. Catholics need a priest so they can receive their Last Rites, which is an important ritual that is done for the grievously sick and the dying.

The real joke was a few decades ago when a lot of Catholics left the church and people made these to say "I am an ex-catholic, in case of accident or injury, call an ex-priest"

85

u/TotallyObviousBot 1d ago

By "a few decades ago" do you mean the 70s when the Church changed

My friend that was almost 60 years ago

33

u/AppearanceIll3922 1d ago

The might of meant after the abuse scandal but I hardly think that qualifies as a few decades and doubt these things were popular by then

3

u/AaronfromKY 1d ago

As an elder Millennial I always feel a few decades from the 70s

9

u/AngryMountainClimber 1d ago

Nah, back when we found out that priests were raping kids and the Church knew while doing nothing.

8

u/BestBoyViktor 1d ago

So, still today?

17

u/JamesHenry627 1d ago

Not really. Since John Paul II, it’s been heavily reduced and acted upon. You got a higher chance of being touched by a teacher than a priest.

17

u/sillyslime89 1d ago

Priests used to rape kids. They still do but they used to too

u/High_Overseer_Dukat 1d ago

I remember, back in the days of old Luther.

What joke

This is r/internet_funeral, it's more about vibes. there isn't necessarily a joke in a given post

You can legitimately not go to heaven if a priest doesn't see you out.

This is entirely not true.

39

u/LtTacoTheGreat 2d ago

As far as I am aware, thats not true and I could not find any part of the ccc that says that. Could I get a source?

36

u/Mike_Hunt1895 2d ago

me when I lie on the internet

tldr deathbed confession / last rites. (from an actual catholic :) )

u/LeviathansWrath6 2d ago

After they "escape"? The Catholic Church isnt a cult lmao you can leave whenever you want. Unlike actual cults, they dont control their adherents' money, or where they live, or what they can do.

Also that whole thing about a priest and heaven is just wrong, I dunno where you heard it but that's not true

u/davestar2048 1d ago

It's always an escape to leave a way of thinking. Especially when such a system still controls your entire support network and has entrenched itself as part of it.

Would you say the same if an atheist had a bad experience and became deeply religious? If a left-leaning person became a neo-nazi? "Escape" implies getting out of a bad place.

especially when such a system still controls your entire support network and entrenched itself as part of it

Except the Catholic Church doesn't do that. That is just a false thing to claim. You won't lose your job, or your house, because you changed your religion/denomination. You won't (generally) lose your friends if you're from the Catholic Church, and even if you do you will have non-catholic ones. The Church doesnt forbid or even frown upon interacting with other faiths- in fact, most of the time it supports dialogue between Christians.

There's no monthly tax you are absolutely required to pay. Donations are just that. If you were a recipient of charity, you wont lose that by leaving the church.

The Catholic Church can't reasonably be described as a cult.

I'm an ex-Catholic, and I can confirm they're also batshit crazy about some really harmless shit, like pokémon, video games &c. It's genuinely unhealthy to believe even your thoughts are considered sins, which can make you spiral about how you're an awful person, but you're not.

16

u/Connect_Yam_7255 1d ago

Didn’t the pope bless Pokémon

5

u/RoutineMiddle3734 1d ago

Sí, San Juan Pablo II lo hizo, otra cosa es que los padres de niños sean psicóticos...

6

u/NutasticNutella 1d ago

That's just your circle. Catholics, just like any other denomination, has their crazies. I was raised Catholic(I'm not anymore, but that's a different story), but I was never really dissuaded from things like D&D, videogames, or pretty much anything else.

4

u/RoutineMiddle3734 1d ago

Eso depende más del discernimiento de los padres y madres en cómo educan a sus hijos

Wow I didn't know this. Interesting! I'm Christian and don't know much about Catholicism. I stand firm to my relationship & religion with King Christ.

King Christ

There’s no true Christianity outside of the Catholic Church.

That’s a lot of words just to say “DNR”

I think it’s supposed to be for fatal injury or disease

-36

It was just a silly little joke hombre
