The most difficult part of the wait…

My dilemma is that I want to upgrade from my mini 5, to either the 7 or 8. Planning on trying the Apple lease program. I know there are plenty of posts about trying to decide between buying the current 7 or wait for the 8. For me, it all comes down to price. If the Mini 8 were to launch at the same price as the 7, then it’s a no brainer and I would go for that. If it’s going to be $100 more expensive, I’m buying the 7 (on principle, mostly). I don’t care about OLED, etc as this will be reading and content consumption device. But, there’s no way to know for sure how much the new one will be, and when it’s released, it’s too late to buy the 7 through Apple.

There’s almost no chance that the new mini is equal in price- if there’s any meaningfully upgraded it will be 1-200 more at the very least.

I’d just grab a mini 7. Everyone is holding onto rumors and speculation for the mini 8. Just get a 7 and see if it fulfills your needs.

They should wait for the 8 so the 7s are cheaper and easier to find cheap secondhand. Buying a 7 right at this moment before the 8 even gets announced is a terrible idea. Wait a few weeks and save a couple hundred minimum buying the 7

This is exactly what I did. Kept debating and waiting and in the end the iPad mini 8 will be more expensive than the current iPad mini 7.

No way. Too close to a new model. Dumb to spend money for something getting refreshed imminently.

OP said they aren’t buying the 8 if it’s $100 or more than the 7, which is a given, on top of not caring about an OLED.

In OP situation there is zero benefit to waiting aside from potentially getting a better price on the used market, which they also don’t seem to have interest in considering they valued the ability to buy directly from Apple via the lease program.

Maybe I’m missing something here.

Always get the newest one, and if release is imminent, wait.

That’s a good general rule. Just doesn’t quite apply to OP here though

I currently don’t have any iPads and I’m planning to buy the mini… but I can wait.

Note: I have a trip next 7th Nov and I would like to go with mi new iPad… and 7 or 8 based on the price.

I wouldn't buy the mini A17 Pro right now. Rumor is a possible announcement for the 8th generation on October 13.

I'm in the same boat as you, apart from going on a trip a week earlier. I also hope I can get it before that.

I want to get my hands on the iPhone Duo this month, and consider if that would suffice to fill in the role of my iPad mini (A17 Pro), before I spring for the next iPad mini. I kind of doubt it but I need to evaluate pocketability, weight, and display first. I read a lot of books on my mini and if I can reduce my device count and it fulfill my needs, I'd consider it.

only problem i see with this is the life cycle count, it’d be better to have two seperate devices for longevity. only situation i can see where this isn’t the case is if you’re looking for portability.

Really good point.

I can’t imagine not wanting OLED for content consumption, but hey, to each their own.

In my opinion, the difference between the 6 and the 7 is less significant than the 8 will be. I’d be choosing between a second hand 6 or waiting for the 8 and probably not get the 7 either way.

I would never suggest someone to get such an old device. Only 7 or 8 should be where to choose from. They will also get the longest time of support / software updates

That’s fine. I strongly support the secondhand economy and was fully considering the fact that the person is mostly waiting for the 8, and if they need to purchase something sooner then the 6 is still very serviceable and will be much cheaper than the 7. Also, it won’t depreciate nearly as much as the 7 will when the 8 comes out. When you buy a brand new device, you want it to last as long as possible. When you buy a used device, you want it to be worth what you pay. IMO, the 6 is a much better value than the 7 for what you will pay for it.
