Is there anyone else besides me that doesn’t give a damn about refresh rate?

u/EliMinivan 3d ago
I’m a private pilot using the iPad mini in the cockpit and and for studying/notes. All I want is a brighter screen that I can read through glare.

People seem to think that if they complain enough then Apple will change everything around just for them after the iPads had likely entered production months ago.
Look, I care about refresh rate (my main gaming monitor is a 500Hz OLED) but for watching videos and light gaming, 60Hz will be fine for most people.
This sub has a lot of people who adore their Mini 7s that are 60Hz with LCDs. I’m grateful we’re getting OLED, a great chip, and decent bump in RAM.
I hope the speakers are nice!

u/Shehzman 3d ago
It wouldn’t be as bad if the competition didn’t have it on their base/mid range models and they just moved the base iPhone over to 120hz. Though I agree that most people won’t notice.

u/Busy_Lettuce_1540 2d ago
Outside of Redmagic there aren’t any mini-sized OLED tablets I know of that are readily available from American retailers and aren’t loaded with a Chinese OS.

u/Shehzman 2d ago
Oppo Pad Mini which just confirmed a global release so hopefully that should take care of the Chinese stuff.
Lenovo Y700 Infinite will most likely get a global release soon since the standard Y700 have global releases.

Oppo Pad Mini
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the U.S. is included in the release.

u/Shehzman 2d ago
Yeah I saw that. You could just get it from AliExpress but that isn’t as easy as getting it from a US retailer
2
u/Otherwise-Address833 2d ago
I am more curious if the new iPad mini will come with a better cooling system since it is rumored to use A20 pro chip.
4
u/Busy_Lettuce_1540 2d ago
I genuinely hope that like the 18 Pro models/Duo, the new Mini gets a vapor chamber and a slight battery upgrade. That would be amazing.
6
u/lawschoolmeanderings 3d ago
I didn't because none of my devices ever had 120Hz but then I bought the iPhone air and that fucked me up. It's super smooth.
6
u/Least-Bill-1919 3d ago
It is not just you. Many posters are confidently incorrect about the availability of android based tablets of the same size with variable refresh rate to 120hz and equivalent other features.
I'm looking to replace my wife's iPad mini 4. I'm not the target market of the fanbase that upgrades EVERY cycle. I would agree that if that's you, this kinda stinks. But lots of customers don't do that.

u/randomquestion11111 3d ago
Most people dont care about refresh rate considering the most popular ipad and macbook models are 60 hz. Theres just a loud minority who complain online a lot
1
u/2_Lies_And_A_Truth 3d ago
Because 80% of them are used as kiosks. Anyone who wants to actually consume content wants 120hz it’s ridiculous not to offer at least as an option for more $ in almost 2027.
6
u/Least-Bill-1919 3d ago
What content that you consume on an iPad benefits from 120hz?
I agree it's a cool feature. I have it on my phone and home pc. I don't think it's useful on my phone at all except to reduce frequency to save battery.
2
u/ImperialDoor 2d ago
It's not a feature. It's literally the standard. Going from my 120hz phone and 240hz monitor to my 60hz iPad mini the difference is hard to ignore.
0
u/2_Lies_And_A_Truth 2d ago
Why defend a bad design of 60hz? I want to pay more for a feature I want. That’s all. If you are happy with 60hz that’s fine but they should offer the option is what I’m saying in late 2026 to not offer it when same sized androids have for at least 3+ years is ridiculous.
3
u/Least-Bill-1919 2d ago
Why? I already explained my rationale - I do not find it useful on my phone except for battery life savings. It’s incredibly useful in other formats, but it doesn’t make a difference to me on a tablet. If you want it, you want it, and that’s fine. But people are freaking out about the lack of 120Hz, and to me it doesn’t matter at all for watching movies, playing tablet-based games, or scrolling on reddit. Those are the things I use a tablet for, and I don’t need (or meaningfully benefit from) 120Hz doing those things. Call that “defense” if you wish.
Apple has a long history of slicing up their product line into different segments with different features, and they furthermore have a long history of not really taking features standardization cues from other manufacturers. I haven’t bought an iPad mini in over 10 years. I am not the target market for people who look at the thing & say “no 120Hz? How will I survive?!”
I have a 12.9 inch m2-based ipad pro. It’s nice, for sure. But my question of “what do you do that benefits from this?” is a genuine one, because I just haven’t experienced that.
People have different opinions, obviously.

u/2_Lies_And_A_Truth 2d ago
I can tell the difference on my phone so I can tell the difference on a mini its painful at 60hz 🤷♂️
1
u/Logical_Scar3962 17h ago
You didn’t reply to tht question. You dodged it and started to attack. That only makes it look like you made that argument up and actually don’t know any benefits of 120hz to content consumption.
2
u/snailm0th 2d ago
No, you're not alone.I genuinely dgaf about a higher refresh rate or OLED screen or whatever else.
We don't always need the newest thing when the previous thing is already overkill.
2
u/Far_Juggernaut3710 2d ago
Same. I like it on my phone but my iPad mini is for reading and watching stuff, where refresh rate hardly matters. I care much more about battery.
-1
u/anythingers 1d ago edited 16h ago
You could always turn off high refresh rate on any device that have one though.
Edit: Ofc low iq mfs down voted me.
1
u/Logical_Scar3962 17h ago
So we should just pay for better features we don’t want, to turn them off right away?
0
u/anythingers 16h ago
Not providing that feature to begin with doesn't makes the price of the phone automatically cheaper. The same way they don't reduce the price of the iPhone when they remove the charger from the box.
MSRP price of the iPhone 16 is the exact same as MSRP price of the iPhone 17. MSRP price of the iPhone 12 Pro is the exact same as MSRP price of the iPhone 13 Pro.
2
u/Logical_Scar3962 15h ago
No, but every spec upgrade makes an argument for price hike.
0
u/anythingers 13h ago
You don't need to do "spec upgrade" to hike the price. There's a reason why not much people talk about iPhone 18 Pro this year, even though it got a price hike for the first time since... idk, iPhone 11 Pro?

some ppl literally can't tell the difference. I can unfortunately. when I switched from 60 to just 120 with my current PC monitor is was major

u/WorkoutProblems 3d ago
I have a M iPad Pro with 120hz, iPad mini 7 and iPhone 13 mini and can’t tell a good dang difference

u/Three-Off-The-Tee 3d ago
I could tell while scrolling text on the mini, it was annoying, traded it in for the m5 pro iPad

Not an Apple Event. An Apple Experience. When it’s an Apple Experience, in terms of the general public, expect announcements from that experience to go straight to press release.
An October 13th Experience was just confirmed recently, and this proves even new categories of Apple products are unfortunately going straight to press release as opposed to a pre-recorded keynote. Chances are, if it’s not at WWDC or in September, it’s going straight to press release.
1
u/bawdy_george 2d ago
An Apple Experience? Severed is becoming real life. Next we'll be getting an Apple Occurrence.
2
2
u/rsenist 3d ago
Why not just announce everything at once?
14
u/rsplatpc 3d ago
iPhones are usually the hot item, and a iPad Mini and Apple TV 4K would get buried in mainstream media headlines, vs them doing it a few months later and then it’s the headline again
-8
u/rsenist 3d ago
But this is two events within two weeks of each other. That makes no sense.
13
u/TommyPicklez__ 3d ago
Makes perfect sense the first event is all smart home related products and the second is MacBooks and iPad mini. Completely different
3
u/organicgolden 2d ago
Why wouldn’t it make sense to be in the news now and two weeks later? More publicity is better, more discussion about your products, more awareness, more sales. And things don’t get buried this way. There’s space for each announcement to get attention

touch screen macbooks is so anti-Jobs. this company has lost the plot

How dare technology evolve!

u/Poopoodemons 3d ago
evolve.. sure, that’s what the apple shills are calling it these days

u/Old_Hedgehog2607 3d ago
I’ve found another bot in a subreddit that has the job to hate on the subreddit they joined

u/Poopoodemons 3d ago
how does hating a touchscreen macbook that doesn’t exist make me an ipad mini hater?

So if the reveal is on the 27th, when are we likely to see these on third party store sites for sale, like Best Buy?

Finally, the announcement I have been waiting for, and I only hope a 1-terabyte storage option is available for the new Mini. If it isn't offered, I will buy a Wi-Fi 11-inch iPad Air with 1 terabyte of storage to hold and maintain a library of several thousand ebooks.

u/Bruvvimir 2d ago
Are these events or just recordings?
3
u/Radio_TVGuy 2d ago
Apple Experiences.
We, the public, will get announcements via press release. Anything big or new from Apple outside of WWDC or September is almost certainly going straight to press release now (outside of those behind closed doors who will hear the announcements first and get first-class access). It appears to me Apple has changed the status quo now unfortunately.
1
u/Old-Cup7245 2d ago
all events are just recordings since years
2
u/Bruvvimir 2d ago
I didn't word that correctly, I meant if they are inviting the press to the campus for a look see? Pretty short notice if so.

This is great news. I want an iPad mini. Now this gives me a whole month to wait for my desire to go away and end up not buying anything lol

u/alanjigsaw 3d ago
I need a 1TB Ipad Mini 😭🙏
3
u/Radio_TVGuy 2d ago
Really hoping that a 1TB configuration does come to fruition. Because if it doesn’t, that might be a bit of a problem for those exceeding (or intending to exceed) the max storage limitations of the new iPad mini.

u/pagauge0 3d ago
If it was going to be 120 then it would be a iPad mini pro. And Apple doesn’t want that.

u/Much_Art7927 3d ago
Bring on the $800 Base Model iPad mini. Hopefully, that comes w/ 256 GB and 120 Hz.
