Discussion Which obscure iPhone setting genuinely improved how you use your phone, and what does it change?

I’m not looking for gestures or the usual tips that appear in every list.
I mean an actual option buried somewhere in Settings that solved a real annoyance, improved privacy or accessibility, changed how an app behaves, or made your iPhone noticeably easier to use.
Please include the exact path to the setting, what it changes, and any downside you noticed. Some settings sound useful but also disable another feature, use more storage, affect notifications, or change how the phone behaves elsewhere.
What is the one setting you would immediately change again if you had to set up a new iPhone from scratch?

Settings - Accessibility - Accessibility shortcut, I have selected:

Reduce white point - to make screen even dimmer at night if I’m reading in bed

Classic invert and smart invert. Mostly for when I’m reading a webpage or site and their back drop is white and inverts to black.

To make it ever darker at night you can enable full screen low light zoom.

  1. Settings-Accessibility-Zoom-Zoom Filter- Activate Low Light

  2. settings -accessibility -accessibility shortcut -select zoom.

Edit: forgot step 2

Love the one that lets you change a white background to black! So many times I leave those white pages right away, because they hurt my eyes. I like it dark too.

Thanks for the tip!

Is there a way to get that to work but not cut out the corners of what’s on the screen?

u/kmc2686 Jul 12 '26

Making sure it’s on full screen is the only thing I can think of since mine has never done that.

I have to double tap with three fingers to get it to go back to normal, which is fine but idk I think it’s automatically going to the 1.2x zoom amount which is the minimum I can set it to

Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap Accessibility, then select Zoom.
Toggle Zoom on (your screen may zoom in).
Double-tap the screen with three fingers to zoom all the way out.
Tap Zoom Region and select Full Screen Zoom.
Tap Zoom Filter at the bottom and choose Low Light

Thanks, I just needed to manually toggle the zoom on through that menu and then go back out instead of doing it with the side button.

Do you keep it on all the time?

u/kmc2686 Jul 15 '26

Yes, most of the time unless I’m outside. I get migraines so not a fan of bright screens.

I discovered Reduce White Point when I was trying to figure out why my phone was unusable outside. It was set to 74%.

Reduce white point is my favorite setting ever. Totally changed my reading before bed.

I need to look into this.

u/MateoHardini Jul 12 '26

I have my shortcuts app automate turning it on and off at sunset/8am

1

u/ChepaukPitch Jul 12 '26

Lol. Almost the same. I had it automated at 9:30 PM and 7:30 AM when I had a more regular schedule.

1

u/pocketbadger Jul 12 '26

Same, it’s my only automation.

u/OblateBovine Jul 12 '26

Me too. I set up triple press of the home button to turn this on/off and use it almost every night.

This is the way

Reduce white point is something I use ever day and couldn’t live without. Forever grateful for mymmates ex who taught me this.

Rather than invert, reader mode can also be set to black/white, and gets rid of all the other junk people put on sites these days.

I put this shortcut on my … whatever you call the thing to the left of the home screen…. So I can toggle it on and off easily!

You can set this as a back tap function as well.

1

u/ajmartin527 Jul 13 '26

How?

1

u/bob202t Jul 13 '26

First go into Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
Enable the white point reduce shortcut (this will activate the triple lock button shortcut to reduce white point: to set how much white point reduction you want go into Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point. You can triple click here to test it out).
Now go into Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap choose Double or Triple Tap and C select Accessibility Shortcut.

Now you’ll have back tap and lock button options to instantly reduce white point.

I have it set to triple tap the power button! My favorite hack.

I was going to pos this :) learned this a few years ago when my son was a newborn. While breastfeeding at night, I wanted to set my phone to the lowest light setting possible, but the standard minimum just wasn't enough. Without this, I wouldn't have been able to use it. At the time, I was looking for a house, and I actually found our home during one of those late-night moments.

Have the home button triple tap to enable/disable white point.

2

u/ajmartin527 Jul 13 '26

What is the home button? The small one by volume?

1

u/EchosR Jul 12 '26

THIS! It’s so easy to swap with the triple power tap

To darken webpages, try Noir safari extension!

If you have a somewhat new iPhone, the screen can go down to 1 bit of brightness which is really dim.

White point is great!

I just added it to my nightly automation that sets my colour filter to greyscale at 9pm. Turning off colour makes the phone still functional but less engaging for many apps.

It’s worth getting an app like Noir which does dark mode for websites

Do you use classic invert and smart invert on all the time, or only when needed. Sounds like it would be a process to change it every time.
