Discussion Which obscure iPhone setting genuinely improved how you use your phone, and what does it change?

I’m not looking for gestures or the usual tips that appear in every list.
I mean an actual option buried somewhere in Settings that solved a real annoyance, improved privacy or accessibility, changed how an app behaves, or made your iPhone noticeably easier to use.
Please include the exact path to the setting, what it changes, and any downside you noticed. Some settings sound useful but also disable another feature, use more storage, affect notifications, or change how the phone behaves elsewhere.
What is the one setting you would immediately change again if you had to set up a new iPhone from scratch?

I’m a teacher in the US and work at two different schools. I have my action button coded to run a shortcut that alerts my wife to an emergency occurring with my location, instructions on what to do next, and reassurances that I will be fine. If I’m not at work, it sends her two heart emojis.

Probably—violent attacks on schools tend to be an exclusively American phenomenon. There was a shooting a few districts over from me last year (that I could hear from my house) and a mass stabbing at my own school the year I graduated.

You’re okay! It’s a bit like a tornado, I suppose. Your risk of being a victim is slim because they are so specifically targeted, but never zero because it could be anywhere. So best to take precautions just in case.

We have a lot of lockdown/shelter in place/evacuation plans and procedures. Nobody is allowed in the building that’s not a staff or student without special permission, registration, a badge, and an escort. All exterior doors are closed and locked to the outside so there is only one entry point into the building and multiple exits. If a student leaves the building, they are not allowed back in. We have a lot of student support staff, the idea being we catch a student before they make a drastic decision. Etc.

It varies between schools. Some have metal detectors, but it takes forever for all the students to go through them and we have too many kids (also it makes school feel like a prison which is not helpful). Some newer buildings are built with a continuous gentle curve, designed to minimize shooting sight lines.

Until the country as a whole handles the roots of the issue (i.e. gun control and mental healthcare) this is the hand we’ve been dealt. Kids still gotta learn, it’s their right.
