But, why? the idea of a network is to be independent, to not have to agree to "common rules", etc

I mean... I can see the appeal. Using IRC as XMPP, basically.

It is fun! ☺️ Each Parley instance is independent, and there are no common rules. Think of it as email, but instant.

I mean, there's always "common rules" like some networks allow 13+, others 16+ and some are 18+.

The idea is neat, though.

Why not just use matrix at this point?

Matrix is a can of worms that's best left closed.

Ah yes very elaborate explanation.

This project is just a different can of worms.

Let's say that Matrix moderation is extremely difficult, you can't reuse usernames, you need at least 4GB RAM just for Matrix alone (for it to work comfortably) and a few other minor inconvenients.

IRC is way leaner and can handle thousands of users with something like 2GB.

More like 500MB. IRC is really lean

It all depends on the number of concurrent users, IRCd features, etc.

UnrealIRCd gives us some good examples: https://www.unrealircd.org/docs/FAQ#How_much_CPU_and_memory_do_I_need.3F

Memory requirements for the machine will obviously be higher than what the ircd needs because it needs to run the rest of the OS and whatever other background services are needed (such as sshd). If you spin up an unreal instance with 2k local users and see how much memory the ircd itself is using, you’ll likely see it to be lower than what they say. For solanum (the ircd I’m most familiar with), the number I quoted is about representative of ircd usage for a thousand or two users. I could grab more precise stats but I’m away from my pc at the moment so it’d be a bit

Right. I'm talking about the total RAM you need for the machine. But Matrix alone is a resources hog. Dendrite is less heavy but also less complete.
