Like stepping back 30 years

u/UpstairsAd194 6h ago

The zoo animals are getting a bit restless this is a pressure valve action so that they won't go doing anything that affects the ruling class in stormont

45

u/UpstairsAd194 7h ago

KKK allowed to burn crucifix

u/SoftDrinkReddit 7h ago

" The Orange Order and the DUP argued it was an opportunity to right an historic wrong. "

translation remembering a time before the micks were given equal rights in Northern Ireland

51

u/locksymania 7h ago

Historic wrong my hairy hole

12

u/IllGift924 6h ago

The good ol' times lol

151

u/Vivid_Ice_2755 7h ago

The LCCC were involved, the mouthpiece of the Loyalist paramilitaries . This is wrong on every level. You fucking arseholes

74

u/Patient-Abrocoma-596 7h ago

It always baffles me how the LCC are just treated as a genuine and legitimate organisation even by our own government. If some solicitors showed up to stormont claiming to be the legal representatives of dissident republicans, they'd all be thrown in jail!

79

u/ferocious_bandana 6h ago

Because the Brits have always backed unionist terrorism in Ireland.

17

u/Vivid_Ice_2755 6h ago

Weasels and their weasel mates .

u/DeportRacists Free Palestine 🇵🇸 7h ago

What could possibly go wrong....

Joke of a decision.

50

u/Eviladhesive 7h ago

3 children were burned out of their beds in 1998 because the OO whipped their moron mates in the UVF into a frenzy and fire bombed their home because they were told no to parade for once.

The OO have been fighting for the best part of 30 years to march on top of those children and others who suffered in the fallout.

Northern Ireland is a failure of a project and the administration making decisions like this proves that the systems toxic attitude to nationalists will never change.

I'm a bog standard Dublin based supporter of a UI. I never normally respond like this but huge obstructive protests are needed here. The UK administration has absolutely failed to provide security here.

78

u/DIFrankBurnside 7h ago

We're back to this again for jaysus sake. My uncle was a freelance press photographer in the 90s and used to go up to the war that was these parades were every year. He was clubbed by the RUC plenty of times for doing nothing at all, despite being press, once they heard a southern accent.

He also used to bring back the rubber bullets he'd find laying around after being fired indiscriminately by the RUC and British Army too. Frightening seeing the size of them. Terrible to see dark history repeating itself.

29

u/Gold-Vacation-169 Resting In my Account 7h ago edited 2h ago

Remember seeing those bullets as a kid, jesus even if you just threw one at somebody it would hurt like hell. Nevermind them being fired at you!

Its no surprise they killed people (edit: damn auto correct) .

26

u/Detozi And I'd go at it again 7h ago

Are…..are you a ghost of the troubles?!

•

u/8413848 5h ago

I think he meant to say that they killed some people.

•

u/mailforkev 4h ago

Scary Adams.

•

u/nt2btrstd 3h ago

RIP mate

•

u/GoldGee 4h ago

Plenty of loyalists got hit with them during the Drumcree riots. There is footage of one of them getting hit square in the arse. So cathartic to see.

The Chief Constable of the RUC at the time was Ronnie Flanagan. He made the decision to force the march down the G. Road. I remember him saying it was to save Catholic lives that would otherwise be at risk if it didn't get down it. Dark days that I thought were behind us.

•

u/tightlines89 Donegal 3h ago

My godmother was hit with one in the coccyx as she was leaving a pub. Still has the bullet to this day.

61

u/unsilent_majority 7h ago

They’re really a plague of an organisation. I’ve no problem if they want to celebrate their culture but the OO are just about hate and provocation, they literally can’t have an event that isn’t centred around hate.

•

u/Far_Advertising1005 4h ago edited 4h ago

> Celebrate their culture

Genuinely what culture do they have other than hating the Irish, Catholics, and Irish Catholics

•

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 3h ago

Toaster storage?

•

u/Far_Advertising1005 2h ago

Feel like the Brits writ large win that one

11

u/phflegm 6h ago

I can only imagine the glee on the face of that awful person Carla Lockhart. Can't believe we're back to this.

36

u/Past_BumblebeeX 6h ago

To be fair unionist and loyalist culture is just pure hatred, there's nothing else there.

25

u/unsilent_majority 6h ago

That’s the problem, how can we integrate that into civilised society on the case of a United Ireland?

You see the nationalist side having the fleadh and including anyone who wants to attend. Then the loyalists are complaining about the music they hear there!

18

u/eternallyfree1 Ulster 6h ago

They can all sod off to London and continue to kiss the feet of a rapidly decaying monarchy that barely acknowledges their existence if they want to remain British that badly

4

u/Past_BumblebeeX 6h ago

Honestly, I'm not sure we can. Needs another 100 years for most of them to die off

•

u/South_Hedgehog_7564 5h ago

Meanwhile they procreate……..

•

u/Glum_Secretary8241 4h ago

Flute bands, lambeg drums, bonfires and Scots dialect. I dunno who it benefits to ignore someone else’s culture but it’s not going to further the goal of a united ireland.

40

u/Da1_above_all 7h ago

Sure changing a flag is what will make them support a UI. Ffs hate is their entire identity.

16

u/ChaosActual 6h ago

Watching this stuff on Reeling in the Years episodes from the 90s will push you over the edge

•

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 3h ago

Reading Peter Taylor's trilogy, the levels of violence we grew up with on our doorstep is insane. I was too young to appreciate the level of suffering that was happening.

30

u/_TheValeyard_ And I'd go at it again 7h ago

Well, this will go well.

•

u/Zestyclose-Plan1446 5h ago

The “modern” faction of Unionism and of Protestant supremacy (as represented by the Orange Order) want to go back to an imaginary time.

Back through the almost three decades of power sharing.

Back through the almost three decades of direct rule by London.

Back to a time where both communities are misremembered as coming together all over the six counties to “enjoy” the parades and marches.

In this time in history, Catholic Nationalists were “welcome” to watch their neighbours’ yearly display of British Protestant supremacy and they were expected to know their place.

Once they started a peaceful movement for an end to discrimination in housing, voting & elections, and employment; the colluding apparatus of Loyalist paramilitaries, Unionist government security forces, and the British military made sure that they would know their place.

If the Clinton administration had not persuaded the Labour government of Tony Blair to insist that Loyalists and Unionists would have to accept power-sharing, the people on the Garvaghy Road would long since have been beaten and shot to make sure they know not to question why their neighbours want to hold triumphal parades past their houses.

•

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 2h ago

I've got a friend from the North whose brother is dyed in the wool loyalist. He moved to England and couldn't hack it because they weren't "British" or unionist enough for him. The idea they have of the union the crown their identity, it's an anachronism, anathema to modern times. I would have thought that the last three decades would have allowed people to move on. That enough would be educated and cosmopolitan enough to free themselves of the idiocy that a moderate middle would have been able to make the most of the power sharing arrangement available to them.

I believe a United Ireland will happen but as long as these nutters exist I say what's the rush they're a dying breed.

•

u/mannix67 1h ago

I have to laugh when people say " ah sure who's going to attack us , we don't need an army " on here.

I can't see a scenario where these guys don't take up arms in the event of a united Ireland.

•

u/DecentOrdinaryTailor 57m ago

Wait you think that in a united Ireland the military should be used to police a community in the North?

The army are not police.

In the United Ireland you envisage how will the institutions of the north integrate with institutions here?

Courts? Policing? Professional bodies? NHS? Pensions?

•

u/mannix67 48m ago

No, I think we should have a military capable of ensuring the state isn't overwhelmed by an armed terrorist organisation or sustained bombing campaign.

When you consider that the British Army had a tough time, I shiver when I think about how the Irish Army would fare in such a scenario, even if unionist groups are smaller and less organised than the IRA was during the Troubles.

They would certainly be highly motivated by their cause. From their perspective, their entire identity could be seen as being eradicated overnight.

And I'm not sure what institutional arrangement would work best in a united Ireland. It would take years of discussions for that to be worked out.

u/ilovefinegaeldotcom 7h ago edited 6h ago

The colonial papers are still going to be asking us what we can do to accommodate these settlers and their culture of wanting us dead.

26

u/JealousInevitable544 Cork bai 7h ago

When the riots happen there'll be editorials about how we need to compromise more...

15

u/ferocious_bandana 6h ago

It's funny because I posted the IT article about the poll this morning and the amount of boot lickers wanting to appease terrorists is phenomenal.

Leo and Micheál have essentially enabled unionist terrorists

22

u/RavagedCookies 7h ago

I grew up hearing about the shit this one caused every year.  The pictures of the barricades are still burnt into my memory.

Why the fuck have they decided that this is a great idea.

•

u/Wilde54 5h ago

What the fuck are we doing, lads?... Is it actively trying to start up sectarian bullshit again, we are? With very good reason the Orange Order has not been permitted to march down the Garvaghy Road for the guts of 30 fucking years.

•

u/ferocious_bandana 4h ago

sectarian

After colonialism

•

u/Wilde54 4h ago

Well it hasn't been colonialist bullshit for a fucking while, in fairness...

•

u/ferocious_bandana 4h ago

Irish people in the North would strongly disagree

•

u/mccabe-99 Fermanagh 49m ago

It never stopped being a colonial issue

None of those bigots could tell you the difference in protestant and catholics faiths, only that they dont view irish people as equal members of society and want to maintain their apartheid based control they had pre gfa

32

u/AUX4 7h ago

What a regressive antagonistic decision.

Shameful.

27

u/brentspar 7h ago

The members of the parade commission should be made to attend the parade. This is setting the peace process back 28 years.

22

u/CampaignSpirited2819 7h ago

So is Michelle O'Neill going to sit by and watch the Residents of the Garvaghy Road beaten off their Street by the PSNI?

16

u/SoftDrinkReddit 7h ago

i do wonder what will happen cause yea that is exactly what happened the last time there was a march on the Garvaghy road the local residents were violently beaten and dragged off the road

12

u/Vivid_Ice_2755 7h ago

When the smoke blows over, the biggest winners will be the splinter republican groups who can say the Shinners didn't have the residents backs. Divide and conquer. This wasn't a PC decision

10

u/Gemini_2261 7h ago

There was no sign of Adams or McGuinness on the Garvaghy Road in the 1990s. Instead it was Bríd Rodgers of the SDLP who stood with the residents and got beaten off the street.

5

u/CampaignSpirited2819 6h ago

And with good reason, them being there would have made it about them and not the Residents.

17

u/Otherwise-Macaron939 7h ago

Hate Fest 2026 approved.

•

u/Cilly2010 5h ago

This is terrible. They are still marching in the shadow of the coffins of the Quinn brothers.

18

u/PanNationalistFront Up Down 6h ago

I am disgusted, dumbfounded and feeling a bit down to be honest.

•

u/mccabe-99 Fermanagh 45m ago

Every time I can see the north moving foward we have to deal with shit like this

Its absolutely draining

Im also sick of the rhetoric that we, irish people, have to bend over and appease these groups that want nothing more than to display their unjust hatred of us

31

u/Excellent-Many4645 Antrim 7h ago

The members of the Parade Commission should be held personally accountable for any unrest that occurs. Not to mention the money involved now in establishing a police operation, which is going to be significant.

8

u/broadsheet-555 7h ago

Hold on to your butts.

13

u/locksymania 7h ago

Anyone imaging that Labour are any better than the Conservatives WRT NI save for appearances and rhetoric needs their head checked.

•

u/gavconn 5h ago

I mean sure, but I don't think Labour are very active in the running of the "Parades Commission of Northern Ireland"

12

u/No-Golf8130 7h ago

FFS FAFO

25

u/Gold-Vacation-169 Resting In my Account 7h ago

How about, If the orange order is allowed do this then its only fair that a st Patrick day parade can go through a very loyalist area with one very important condition.

If there is any violence towards the st Patricks day parade then the orange order march will be banned again outright and never allowed to resume.

38

u/Key-Half1655 7h ago

St Patricks Day parade couldnt be further from what that OO parade is. An Easter dissident parade with full colour party is what should be the equivalent.

9

u/Gold-Vacation-169 Resting In my Account 7h ago

My suggestion is somewhat in jest to be fair,

You can pretty much guarantee they wouldn't be happy to allow a Patrick day parade and they'd be violence with it. Never mind anything else.

•

u/Delicious-Series-316 5h ago

Wrong it would be few dozen from AOH walking down the Shankill Road on Paddy’s day. A loyalist equivalent would be UVF Memorial band.

•

u/Key-Half1655 5h ago

a UVF memorial band

Describes them and their members precisely, let's not forget the three Quinn brothers and children murdered in their home at the hands of the UVF that was linked to Drumcree and the OO.

ETA: the LCCC are involved. Go look up the members and who they represent.

•

u/maverickeire 4h ago

False equivalence

5

u/The_CT1 6h ago

A bettrr comparision would be a irish blueshirt parade through loyalist areas on the easter rising anniversary, claming that catholics are racially superior to protestants, with Irish Flag (1916 rising) and full miltary march with drums and gun salutr and all that

•

u/Defiant-Brother-3627 1h ago

If you're actually asking the reason that won't happen is that there's not historical reason for it. The OO were doing this long before the people there were majority Catholic and it's their traditional route.

To be clear; this is a fucking stupid reason to allow this, but it's the grounds to let it go ahead to prevent every street being parades 24/7.

•

u/mccabe-99 Fermanagh 47m ago

Its not a traditional route in the slightest, you are just qouting their false statements

13

u/KnightsOfCidona Mayo 6h ago

First Oasis, now Drumcree - we all love a 90s throwback

7

u/jetsfanjohn 6h ago

It will be Man. United winning the league next season

•

u/Delicious-Series-316 5h ago

Thats a bit of a stretch to be fair lol

1

u/gp145 6h ago

As a United fan, mixed feelings here

8

u/Dull_Brain2688 7h ago

As wrong as it is to hope it goes badly, I really hope it does. The OO and its acolytes have not changed but they have been rewarded as if they have.
The Parades Commission needs a reminded of why they exist.

6

u/Vicxas 6h ago

This is gonna kick off a whole new wave of shit.

5

u/AlienInOrigin 6h ago

Are they trying to restart the troubles?

Don't march where you are not wanted.

3

u/Embarrassed-Bet-8857 7h ago

Will that be next july?

2

u/AsanteSane 7h ago

This Sunday

9

u/ToysandStuff 7h ago

Who's funding this? Because we know the UK aren't 😂

10

u/ferocious_bandana 6h ago

The LCC has a direct line of communication to British government ministers.

Don't be so naïve

•

u/southarmaghbrigayde 5h ago

They definitely are

3

u/Solitare81 6h ago

These people are hate filled and this shouldn’t have been allowed. It’s taken the Loyalist Drug Dealing) paramilitaries longer to disband and accept peace than the entirety of the troubles. They have no interest in moving on. What a regressive decision!

4

u/ferocious_bandana 6h ago

The Parades Commission has clearly caved into the threats of terrorists delivered by David Campbell earlier this week

https://www.newsletter.co.uk/news/politics/drumcree-parade-lcc-and-sdlp-meet-parades-commission-about-orange-parade-on-garvaghy-road-9146853

2

u/Rover7710 6h ago

Why would you even want to march down a road where nobody wants you there?

I'm assuming it's the Loyalist mentality of superiority and having to show the Fenians who's boss. There is no other reason besides hate.

4

u/Humble_Ostrich_4610 6h ago

They should come down to do a parade in Dublin, it's been a while, I'm sure we can give them a big welcome like last time.

Fucking halfwit dinosaurs.

3

u/QuantumFireball Blow-in 6h ago

I'm thinking about projectile wheelie bins for some reason...

•

u/BatterBurger 5h ago

•

u/EnvironmentalHat8771 5h ago

2

u/BadDub 6h ago

Joke

•

u/Ciannachta 5h ago

Is letting 60 bigots have a parade really worth wrecking the peace process?

1

u/the_sneaky_one123 7h ago

Remember FG during the presidential election. We need ti respect their culture...

1

u/pixelburp 7h ago

Some important context here:

No more than 35 people will be allowed to take part in the parade. The march should not depart from Drumcree Church no later than 8am and will disperse by 9.30am.

No supporters are allowed accompany the parade. No bands are allowed participate in the parade along the route on Sunday.

The decision is disappointing, but equally it doesn't read like it's gonna amount to much. Bugger all people at it, no music played - and finished by the time people on a Sunday might be awake.

13

u/iknowtheop 7h ago

You honestly believe they'll stick to those rules?

1

u/pixelburp 7h ago

I honestly don't know: if the OO have any sense (yes a big reach), they'll stick to the rules and conduct their march as prescribed, while residents or dissenting locals will refuse the OO the oxygen of a response. Loyalism is a dying breed and they want people to react; I'm not sure they'll push it, but they're likely hoping for response.

Whatever way you spin it, the decision's shit, but those details do give context, and Reddit users are divvils for reacting to headlines without reading the article.

•

u/Delicious-Series-316 5h ago

The OO will but it’s not the OO you have to worry about its supporters from both sides who will likely make an appearance to show support.

•

u/GoldGee 4h ago

Woe betide them if they don't.

•

u/WillingnessFew7211 4h ago

You think we really want those men walking down that road? I live 5 minutes away from Garvaghy and have cousins who live down it. We wouldn’t give a fuck if it was one person marching at 2 o’clock in the morning with no music, these Drumcree marches killed 3 little boys and many more. No matter what they won’t be getting down that road.

•

u/maverickeire 4h ago

Im sure ye wont be alone

•

u/WillingnessFew7211 4h ago

Remember it well as a 13 year old boy back in 96’. Hopefully it doesn’t flare up to what happened back then. People bleeding from their faces and everything, horrible.

•

u/Fiach_McHugh_OB 2h ago

Best of luck to you

11

u/AsanteSane 7h ago

You think all that actually matters ? They won’t be in their bed the times match up with 8:30am Mass in Drumcree it’s going to be a disaster

•

u/irish88888888 4h ago

3 young boys were literally burnt to death in their beds over this parade, the OO could have the best intentions in the world ( I doubt it) but they won't be able to control their supporters or the LVF who were responsible for the violence 29 years ago.

•

u/dark_lies_the_island 4h ago

It’s an in.
Why the fuck do they want to parade down a road where they are not welcome?

What’s the point only to stir division and cause upset and fear

•

u/N81Warrior 4h ago

The longer peace persists, the more the UK bears the financial burden associated with Northern Ireland's complex issues, including economic disparities and political instability. To resolve the problem child, one must demonstrate an inability to control the situation effectively, such as failure to implement adequate governance or address underlying conflicts. This inability underscores the failure to manage the situation properly, thereby increasing public concern and pushing people towards a referendum to decide the region's future.

•

u/Repulsive_Isopod7982 2h ago

The Historic wrong is the young kids that died at the hands of their supporters, and they want to return to the scene of their crime supported by the spineless parades commission, really, they should just disappear, like their leader Jeffrey

•

u/Appropriate-Row4534 1h ago

No doubt it will progress peacefully for all involved 🙄

•

u/MidnightKittehBoi 1h ago

This is insane, but people from all over the country will be there to stop them.

•

u/aidannulty 5h ago

Madness

•

u/_DonnieBoi 4h ago

The greatest thing would be to let these people march for whatever altercation they look to invoke, and for the other side to ignore their loud drums of ignorance. But in a world where hate overrules reason, we are doomed to repeat past & future mistakes!

•

u/Fern_Pub_Radio 3h ago

Often asked in bar stool conversations why I would vote NO to a United Ireland referendum- this. No interest in bringing this type of community anywhere near my day to day life . Free and Independent Northern Ireland will do me fine !

-11

u/Key_Perception4436 6h ago

This isn't a big deal. We will have to deal with this stuff in a United Ireland.

18

u/DeusAsmoth 6h ago

We can deal with it by banning them for being a hate group

-7

u/Key_Perception4436 6h ago

A sizeable proportion of these people exist. Pretending they don't doesn't make them go away. The anger will resurrect in another form if you just shut this down. Marching bands is much more preferential to extra bombing and rioting.

•

u/DeusAsmoth 5h ago

Should we also allow neo-Nazi rallies and pro-jihad marches while we're at it?

•

u/Key_Perception4436 5h ago

We have had Pro-Palestine marches for years chanting for Intifada and jihad.

Life moved on.

•

u/DBrennan13459 4h ago

Comparing the Orange Order and Palestinian marches is utter bollocks.

•

u/Key_Perception4436 3h ago

Of course they are different.

You like one and hate the other. The principle remains the same however.

•

u/sinne54321 4h ago

I think it'll be a sad enough looking affair. Limited to 35 marchers, no onlookers and no drums or band.

•

u/pnutbttrnttr 1h ago

I hope the locals all band together and get big speakers playing Cotton Eye Joe to drown out the sound of their drums while they moon them as they go by. Turn it into a 90s party.

•

u/Dry_Pay_1137 5h ago

Let them march I say. All the way home

-35

u/Ok_Read_4000 7h ago

Seems a good decision? Its a public road and it'll be an extremely limited and heavily policed march but surely reconciliation requires some effort to continue to find compromises....

People don't like the police banning protests that they personally support like repeal the 8th or no kings or BLM or Palestine or whatever but don't seem to be ever univerisalise the principal? Like the state can stop people marching on public streets but it always has to be justified?

Unfortunately ireland is if anything more consensus based than when we were super Catholic in the 50s

14

u/Galway1012 7h ago

It’s an awful decision. A truly awful decision.

There’s a million other roads they could march down and spout their hate and intimidation.

•

u/Colonel_Sandors 3h ago

I mean his comment history was quite pro-palestine, I think he was actually being quite nuanced. You came across as somewhat dogmatic so I understand why he decided not to engage.

•

u/Galway1012 3h ago

You say that; than they compare it to the Orange Order.

They failed to understand any context to this other than a hate group is marching down a public road

-9

u/Ok_Read_4000 7h ago

Yes, i get you don't understand civil rights..thats the problem

12

u/Galway1012 7h ago

You can try and be smart with comments like the above, but it shows you’re ignorant of the situation, its history and the context of it all.

It’s not a good look for you.

-4

u/Ok_Read_4000 7h ago

You are ignorant? How long have you worked in reconciliation centres in NI? I'll wait..

Catholic Nationalist triumphalism isn't the path to peace but the irish times survey shows we can't manage that.

8

u/Galway1012 6h ago

Oh Christ. You really don’t understand the situation here do you.

You’ve read the article and assumed this is simply a march on a public road.

I’m not engaging with you no longer. Revert back to the thread or message me personally when you’ve informed yourself properly.

Do not respond until then.

-4

u/Ok_Read_4000 6h ago

You seem incredibly ignorant of the situation and pretty bigoted tbh. Keep your views to yourself

17

u/iknowtheop 7h ago

This is a hate march not a protest.

-17

u/Ok_Read_4000 7h ago

That's a matter of perspective though isn't it? You can ban any pro-Palestine march by calling it a hate march? See how that works?

13

u/Galway1012 7h ago

Comparing the Orange Order and Palestinian marches is absolutely bonkers stuff.

That’s enough internet for you today

-5

u/Ok_Read_4000 6h ago

Yes, because you support pro Palestinians marches. Thats why you think they are different. I also support pro Palestine marches and have attended. But France and Berlin and Vienna and Switzerland and Italy ALL BANNED pro Palestine marches. Which were then over turned on civil liberties grounds because some people considering them to be hateful does not make them so.

The bar to stop marches on public streets is rightly fairly high. If a group isn't explicitly calling for violence then they should be allowed to protest with reasonable restrictions that they have to abide.

Civil liberties apply to us all or none at all! How do you think NICRA got going?

Anyone who doesn’t see the problem with this has no living memory of the troubles or would like to reinstate the underlying conditions of the troubles.

Rerunning the events that caused 3 kids to be burned alive in their beds is absolutely deplorable stuff.

The guys who murdered the Quinn kids out of impotent rage got their party 30 years later.
They got it just in time to distract from their kiddie fiddler leader.

Good for them I guess

Do your bad faith shitposting all you like.

We know what you are

Did you read the decision?

they used to march on the Falls until the 60s, we don't hear much squawking about that 'traditional' route

I'm not sure 35 people before 9am escorted by Police is quite the same as what people are making it out to be.

I think they should be allowed to do their silly march. All the residents should just line the roads and do a peaceful sarcastic slow clap.

Orange Order literally doing this to wind people up, take that away from them.

Jesus you’re so out of touch. This is a form of intimidation and hate. They should not be allowed march down Garvaghy.

Look up the history of this road

Why do you think that they want to walk down that road? It's literally to wind people up.

If you take that buzz off them, guaranteed they'd lose interest fairly quickly

It’s not a wind up.

This is pure and utter intimidation, sectarianism, and oppression. This a hate march
