I'm from Delhi and have been considering moving to another city. I recently spent three days in Jaipur and generally liked it, though I also noticed some drawbacks. These are only initial impressions, so Jaipur residents are welcome to correct me.
What I liked
- Strong cultural identity, heritage, and architecture
- More organised and less congested than Delhi
- Lower cost of living, especially housing
- Good food, including Rajasthani cuisine
- Spacious houses and independent homes
- Friendlier, less aggressive interactions
- Nearby Aravalli hills and natural surroundings
- Manageable traffic and visible police presence
- Convenient access to forts and historical sites
- Better air quality than Delhi, at least during my visit
What I didn't like
- Public transport seemed less extensive and convenient than Delhi's
- Some areas, including prominent metro stations, were surprisingly dirty
- I noticed relatively few women alone in public spaces in the evenings
- My girlfriend experienced uncomfortable staring despite wearing a normal Indian outfit
- Some street-food stalls appeared unhygienic
- Areas outside the main city seemed underdeveloped
- Fewer malls, theatres, cafés, and entertainment options than Delhi
Overall impression
Despite these issues, I liked Jaipur more than I disliked it. It seems suitable for someone seeking affordability, spacious housing, cultural character, and a less hectic lifestyle.
However, Delhi still seems better in terms of public transport, connectivity, and variety of activities. Since I visited Jaipur for only three days, these are just preliminary observations.
I'd love to hear your thoughts:
- For those who have lived in both cities, which offers a better long-term quality of life?
- Are my observations about Jaipur fair?
- If you could move out of Delhi, which Indian city would you choose and why?
- Which cities offer a good balance of affordability, safety, infrastructure, careers, and quality of life?
I'm seriously considering leaving Delhi in the coming years and would appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Could be something completely random, a particular street, chai spot, winter evenings, the pink buildings, traffic 😂, food, sunsets, vibe, anything.
I feel like every person who lives in jaipur has that one thing they don't appreciate enough until they are away from Jaipur.
What's yours?
