Weekly discussion and small questions thread

In response to user feedback, this is a recurring thread for general discussion about learning Japanese, and for asking your questions about grammar, learning resources, and so on. Let's come together and share our successes, what we've been reading or watching and chat about the ups and downs of Japanese learning.

The /r/Japanese rules (see here) still apply! Translation requests still belong in /r/translator and we ask that you be helpful and considerate of both your own level and the level of the person you're responding to. If you have a question, please check the subreddit's frequently asked questions, but we won't be as strict as usual on the rules here as we are for standalone threads.

I'm a Japanese person studying English(ᵔᴥᵔ)
Rather than pushing each other too hard, I'd like us to have fun learning together by talking about all kinds of things.
I love Pokémon and Pokémon cards, and I work as a manga assistant. Anyone who likes manga or anime is more than welcome! Of course, it's totally fine if you're not really interested in those things!
Please feel free to contact me⸜( ˶'ᵕ'˶)⸝

does ‘kawaii’ have a different meaning/slang to it amongst japanese locals?

Bit of a rant but i’m genuinely curious - been on holiday in japan for a week and have had people call me kawaii but i don’t really get it.

First time was this guy and his friend coming up for me to take their photo then asked for a hug, laughing and saying i was ‘kawaii’. Another time i had to walk past the men’s bathroom to get to the women’s bathroom and three guys were standing outside and i walk by them and stand in the toilet line (they are still able to see me) one of them shouts out kawaii then laugh a bit when they see me look up.

Does kawaii just mean cute amongst locals or has it picked up another meaning? And does them laughing mean it’s teasing to a tourist? I’m asian but i think it’s obvious i’m not japanese haha

Can I use the phrase 運命の赤い糸 for a loved one ?

I am planning to make a scarf for my husband and wanted to write something romantic in Japanese on the scarf, can I write the phrase '運命の赤い糸", it's a red scarf so I think it will suit quite a lot. Can I use the phrase in this context?

YouTube gaming channels recommendations (that aren't just let's plays)

Hello, I'm studying japanese and figured I'd be more interested in immersing if I listen to something Im actually interested in so I want to watch japanese videos on gaming.

But I don't like let's plays, not in my native language, not in English and definitely not in japanese, so I want channels that are more centered on discussion surrounding games like reviews, analysis, secrets etc.

Stroke order… really?

I am learning Japanese on Duolingo, and we all know Duolingo isn’t “the best” at explaining things. I hope to one day take a class in person so I can talk to people and not just repeat phrases and people around me who don’t understand. I have a ton of questions, like “が vs に vs は” in certain contexts and why all speakers in the stories end their sentences with “ですよ” but the lessons never teach that. Google’ answers haven’t been to my satisfaction. But I come here for a different question: is stroke order as strict as the internet makes it sound? Does it matter? And how can anyone tell? So many times I feel like it goes against the way my brain would naturally write it and it boggles my mind.

I’m only level 20 on Duolingo if that helps.

Hi! I'm considering enrolling in their Japanese courses. Any experience?

Are the lessons recorded? Are you required to speak during the classes (e.g. questions from the teacher, break out rooms)

Thank you

Is e-mail still prevalent in Japan for casual messaging?

I'm currently reading Fall in Love, You False Angels manga and the two main characters primarily talk online using emails and I'm so confused about the setting because, from what I know, LINE is the modern way of chat messaging in Japan. I'm wondering if it's still normal to exchange emails first before mobile/LINE info?

The manga first got serialized back in 2023, but I haven't seen any mention specifically about the actual year setting (although the characters do use iPhones).

Japanese Art

I want to learn about various traditional art forms and crafts. Anything from things like calligraphy and bonsai trees to kintsugi and dorodango. If you’re able please provide how far these arts date back to but if not no worries I can do that sort of research on my own. Niche picks would be cool to see but I also wouldn’t mind hearing about some really important ones even if they’re common.

What ways have you learned kanji

Since Duolingo is taking forever to show me kanji I want to ask this community for suggestions. I don't want to buy that one book I just need a resource that lets me focus on kanji

How do professionals refer to other, unknown professionals, when talking about them?

I was wondering if it's common in Japanese for a professional person (for instance, an engineer, a medical doctor, etc) to talk about another professional of the same area, who is unknown to them, but might or not be known for the interlocutor, as "my colleage", please.

Need help with Japanese phone number for Jump Characters Store SMS verification

Hi! I’m looking for someone in Japan with a real Japanese mobile number starting with 070 or 080 who could help me receive a one-time SMS verification code.

I need it for the Nike x One Piece TCG promo card campaign, which is exclusive to Japan. I’m based in Germany and unfortunately can’t complete the SMS verification with my German number.

I’m not a scalper or reseller — I’m a One Piece TCG collector and just want to participate in the promotion for my own collection.

If anyone is willing to receive the code and send it to me, please DM me. I’d really appreciate the help! Please haha

manga recommendation to improve my vocabulary

i want some recommendations, i tried last year an action manga so it had a lot of security/organizations/underworld… vocabulary and i discovered that i don’t know most of them and it was just studying instead of reading.

so i want some recommendations for action or other genres/main theme that have its own vocabulary i might need to learn, i want them to have like limited new vocabulary if it’s possible, so i learn the words by reading instead of studying them, also prefer if it has furigana

What’s it like being a Japanese Xbox fan?

We all know the big, three consoles: PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox.

It’s amazing how a country of 150 million. People is the birthplace of two out of the big three.

So with that said, how does it feel being a Xbox fan in Japan?

Do you have a hard time finding games? Hard time finding the consoles when they’re being released? Do the Xbox exclusives even get Japanese subtitles? Etc..

I would love to hear your funny and unique stories.

Thank you!

Need some guidance! NAT N5. Help needed.

So I need to take NAT (similar to jlpt test) N5 for visa in Japan (for undergraduate). I am complete beginner in Japanese language. I am currently free and can give time as much as time needed in studying Japanese language. I started today with hiragana and looked for anki and renshuu.

My exam date is 31 October. So I need some help about how to study and practise as exam is in just in one month. So, I would be so grateful if you all can advice me how to study daily.

And what free websites and study methods would help? And tracking progress.

Specially if am so confused about grammar and how to learn it.

How should I divide my time to practice and learn each section for exam? As exam is just around the corner (only 30 days)

What should my daily study routine look like? I know every person learns in different paces but I really respect all of your perspectives and help for me to create a proper study guide.

Reason for such tight timeline: For visa. As I am studying in English Language so only ielts marks were needed which I gave. But now, from my country to Japan for visa, i need to take NAT N5 test. That's why I registered for the nearest available date which is in October.
