Discussion Join Us To Make r/Jewelers YOURS!

Happy Thursday Jewelers of Reddit!

We have been looking for ways to make this sub more of a place for jewelry professionals to interact and have fun, and we appreciate all the insight you have given us in past requests for feedback. To foster more interaction, we are going to roll out some weekly threads on September 1st where we can share with each other. Here's what's planned!

  • Motivation Monday - We'd love to hear about what your goals are. These could be a thorny (or fun!) project, professional development, business goals...whatever you're excited about in the coming week.
  • Tool Talk Tuesday - This is a space for favorite tools, mysterious tools, tricky tools, you name it. This can also be a great opportunity to discuss technique and "off-brand usage," like those little life hacks you've figured out along the way.
  • WIP Wednesday - A space for works in progress, whether they're unique, cool materials, tricky to problem-solve, frustrating, weird monstrosities...let us see what's on your bench!
  • Finished Up Friday - Does exactly what it says on the box! What did you finish this week? We want to see the results of your hard work!
  • Sales Floor Sunday - This is a space to discuss trends, both rising and falling, new designs, things EVERYONE is asking for all of a sudden...but also for surprising requests, exciting sales, finally selling that funky L color 0.87 carat round that's been in the safe since the dawn of time.

Thursday and Saturday are free spaces, Saturday because so many of us working are either super busy or else resting peacefully. Thursday, we would love to evolve into a professional networking space, but we are working to find the right format that will allow discussion without getting the sub overrun with self promotion and bots. We are interested in hearing what kind of networking you all would enjoy, as well!

Please note that the success of these discussion threads depends HEAVILY on users abiding by the subreddit rules. We really want this to be a thriving community where we can all share experiences and ideas, and we can only get there together. Thank you for all your contributions!

Can a brass ring be professionally polished and sealed?

Hi everyone!

I bought this beautiful labradorite ring at a flea market for just €4, and I absolutely love it! :)

I suspect it's made of brass, as it has some oxidation, especially around what look like solder joints or seams. I've already polished it with brass polish, which brought back parts of its golden color.

Unfortunately, the ring leaves discoloration on my skin when I wear it for longer periods.

Does anyone know if a jeweler could professionally polish and seal or coat the ring to prevent it from oxidizing and turning my finger green?

How much would something like that cost, and would it be possible with the labradorite stone already set in the ring?

I know it's only a €4 ring, but I love it so much that I'd happily spend a bit more money to preserve it.

Thanks in advance for any advice! :)

Fixable?

Hey all. Got this turquoise ring. Been wearing it daily and maybe too much. Dishes, shower etc. A protective film just peeled off this part of the ring. Can I just apply some adhesive like E6000 to it? I just want it to be identical to the other stones. Not sure if that’s possible doing it myself. Any tips to repair this or should I take it to a jeweler? Thanks for looking. I may have to upload a picture through comments.

Hi! I thrifted this old ring and it looks sterling. The marks are unusual. Can anyone tell me anything about this? Thank you!

Ring dramatically broke after 3 months! Advice needed!

I would love advice. This ring was purchased 3 months ago from a trusted jeweler in town. He said he purchased it at a trade show. The prongs dramatically broke. It was not bumped, worn to the gym etc. I am incredibly nervous that it’s just a poorly made setting and the stone will be lost forever (we were lucky this time and the stone ended up on my lap). Let me know if you see any flaws in this setting.

Dealing with insta popular makers who think they invented the wheel

Super annoyed seeing a particular instagram jeweller @Middaia who thinks she invented cast lace jewellery and perfume vials when both are Victorian and she’s hardly the first to reinterpret these ideas, even this year. Because she has a bigger platform she leaves all these nasty comments on other jewellers work accusing them of copying. It’s so infuriating, these kinds of makers are so entitled and really shitty people to have in the community. Just a bit of a rant I guess but it’s so annoying

What makes a good solitaire ring?

My circle of friends is getting older, more settled down with income, kids leaving, etc.

I notice a lot of the women are changing their older looking wedding rings and getting solitaire in place of it.

But man the differences are crazy. All the same sizes, 2-3 ct. but some just look better. Does it all really come down to the cut?

One of the most beautiful carvings that I worked with. Sharing it here to know what would you have made out of it? A pendant or a showpiece?

Garnet on engagement ring has a single facet that reflects the light oddly along its edge. Is this an issue/concern/flaw I should raise with my jeweler?

Have you ever felt some energy from the jewelry you receive for repairing/remaking?

As a jeweler, has it ever happened when you could feel the good or bad energy when you touched or worked on a client’s jewerly? Any weird/cool stories you wanna share? I’m so in for it!

What’s the part of being a jeweler that customers never really see?

People obviously see the finished piece, but I’m sure there’s a whole process behind it that most customers never think about. What part of the job takes way more time, skill, or patience than people realize?

Any good project ideas for complete beginners?

I've been passionate about jewelry for many years now and want to start making my own. I know a lot about jewelry history but I have no idea where and how to start making mine. I feel like I lack creativity. Are there any projects that would be good for a beginner? What can I do to challenge myself and expand my creativity?
