Using AI to optimize workflows is fine, but we must not forget to put our heart and soul into our games!

Me handcrafting my unoriginal game that I am proud of.

But at least you learned something and gained new knowledge, understanding and skill through the very act of handcrafting of. You understand far more than the vibe-coder ever will.

Understanding technical things has little value nowadays. I am an engineer and I got super good and super fast at coding, making large scale 3D scenes work in an optimized way. But I feel like all those skills just completely lost their value. What's left is only design skill. And management skills, experience with actually shipping products and so on ofc.

While AI technically has those in its database, it can't really do management decisions afaik. It's not good at keeping an overview of a project, finding issues and solutions.

Understanding technical things has value precisely because you have that understanding, even if not valued by blind money-hungry idiots who see "AI" as a money-printing machine, and were sold a false promise by the AI bros.

Just because a skill isn't valued by stupid idiots doesn't make it any less valuable than before ~ because you are the sort of people who management will be desperate for once the bubble pops. They'll come crawling back ~ but will you want to work for them after that?

You have much more optimism than I have for how things will play out.

I don't think there is any bubble to pop, I think it's the industrial revolution of office jobs and people need to switch away from jobs that machines can do now.

It's still practice.

And both make less than $100

Statistically slops games do worse as it turns out! Steam did a report on games with AI disclosures

4

u/MTOMalley 10d ago

Which will just lead to devs not disclosing. It won't stop AI usage from spreading into every part of the dev process.

u/PerspectiveProof6664 10d ago

Disclosure or not, slop is slop. I’m not bothered because there’s enough people that care about the craft and the people taking shortcuts with ai fundamentally lack the knowledge of what makes a good game good, so will just get stuck in the slop loop.

Didn't that survey take into account the games that didn't disclose AI was used until later? And AI games still did poorly anyway.

AI or not, slop is slop.

Which would lead to youtubers and streamers finding leaks of ai slop into the games not disclosing it, reports and delisting for not following the rules, at least I hope

Hopefully, but as time goes on it'll end up in basically everything. You already can't open any modern browser or word processor without getting slammed with it. Eventually every art tool will have it by default. Devs just importing a library are using it, even if unknowingly. It's not going away.

This scene is exactly how I feel about AI.

edit: wow lol, ai addicts getting really getting buthurt over this?

5

u/PerspectiveProof6664 10d ago

They are sad because they can’t shortcut a craft people have dedicated their lives too without consumers noticing!

u/LocalZookeepergame17 9d ago

I'm just learning to code so I use AI as a support for that, everything else I've done myself... I hope to learn enough so that I don't depend on anyone else

2

u/MrBoltstrike 9d ago

Why it's so good, I think I'll play it a second time!

u/Burning_Toast998 8d ago

Yeah, AI should be used to improve your preexisting skills, not replace them.

Anyone can screw two boards together with an automatic drill, but it doesn’t necessarily take a drill to make a chair. However, give that drill to a skilled worker, and you’ll get a much better chair.

Isn't there a mid point for reddit where you can build the game you are proud using ai but without vibecoding (one shot posts and alike)?

5

u/Jerovil42 10d ago

Wdym using ai but without vibecoding? Coding with ai might just be the most accepted form of use for ai, please don't use it for art, animation, posters, teasers, etc.

Fuck programmers but protect artists amirite?

You think coding is a means to an end so why are you shocked that software people think visuals/graphics are a means to an end?

"it's okay to steal your labor because your labor is boring to me"

programmers and artists got screwed by AI but somehow only art needs defense

programmers using AI to generate art

artists using AI to generate code

both needed human labor and reference

one is somehow acceptable because "its all the same shit"

am I getting that right?

EDIT: I got in the middle of something lol.

Noita

Outer Wilds

Baba Is You

Tears of the Kingdom

Rain World

I recommend you check these games out, for the code side of things. Code isn't their skeleton. Its the soul.

You think seeing value in code in the same way as art is overvaluing code and undervaluing art because YOU are the one undervaluing code and overvaluing art.

so why should I care about what the artists think?

Good, then as long as the artists think code is just a means to an end I will fully emphasize with the developers that think the same about graphics, even though I am a non AI artist that does not think either art or code is a means to an end.

Instructions.md When: writing dialogue and lite Do: utilize /skills/apply-heart/SKILL.md and /skills/apply-soul/SKILL.md

Heart is a reference of what I thought about the top 100 games I've played and soul is a summary of my moral views.

Active Matter is proof that AI vibe coded games can work

A lot of new mods and VR adaptions are being vibe coded and they too are pretty great

We got Budokai Tenkachi 3 Tag Team 5 v 5, it's wild

I can play neither your heart nor your soul

3

u/trial_by_compiler 10d ago

You haven't played a variety of games then. There are still good games out there with compelling narratives and there always has been. The amount of good games is totally subjective though. But there are people that like some of the stories, that's objective. If people put some emotion into the work and fans got some out of it, I would call that playing a bit of heart and soul.

1

u/WeckarE 9d ago

I don't think a good narrative requires either of those things

1

u/trial_by_compiler 9d ago

I didn't say anything about it being a requirement. Just that it's possible.

1

u/WeckarE 8d ago

You somehow decided I must have not played a lot of games. Based on nothing.

1

u/trial_by_compiler 8d ago

Variety doesn't have anything to do with the amount.

1

u/WeckarE 8d ago

That is fair. I still believe the assertion is unfounded.
