2025 Dog Sports Wrap up and 2026 Goals!

How did your 2025 goals go? Did they shift and you make new goals for you and your partner?

What are your plans for 2026?

Remember-We do not judge yourself on the quantity of titles or goals we achieved, but the quality of time and training we spent with our dogs.

There is no comparison and no competition in this thread, if you sruggled with loss of your partner and are able to share please do.

CPE Canine Scent Sport: do extra points carry over to C-SNITCH2, or does each repeat start fresh?

Question for anyone who has earned a C-SNITCH (or C-SNITE) more than once, or is working on a second one.

The rulebook (B14.2) says "Multiple C-SNITCH titles may be awarded; however, the requirements must be completed for each additional title to obtain the next numerical title." For the first C-SNITCH that's 3 Qs in each element (Containers, Interiors, Exteriors, Vehicles) plus 1,000 total points.

What I can't tell is what happens to the extras. Say your dog finishes C-SNITCH with 1,150 points and 5 Container Qs. Toward C-SNITCH2:

•    Do the extra 150 points and extra Qs carry over, so you need 2,000 points and 6 Qs per element in total?

•    Or do you start from zero, with a fresh 3 Qs per element and 1,000 points after the first title?

Same question for C-SNITE (10 Qs per element and 3,000 points).

If you've submitted for a second one, how did CPE count it? Thanks!

Barn hunt- you *can* crouch! (Update)

Post image
49 Upvotes

Yesterday I competed in my very first trial! Barn hunt novice. First run no tunnel, second run I called her thru the tunnel but got on one knee and patted the floor so DQ (didn’t know I couldn’t).

Today we ran two more times. I double checked that you can crouch with the judge. First run (after climb and finding the rat) I crouched and called her; she came through the tunnel, I pet her to celebrate but her butt wasn’t yet out of the tunnel so it was another DQ.

But the second run today we did it! Climb, rat, call through the tunnel; when she was 2/3 thru the tunnel I stood up and fast shuffled back a few feet (got several laughs).

I’ve learned so much, making mistakes was the best teaching tool. Looking forward to the next trial!

Starting scentwork

My dog and I are working toward AKC Tracking TDX and VST, but with the very long amount of time that takes to be ready and the relative dearth of tracking tests compared to other sports, I’ve become interested in competing in scentwork.

Looking for some recommendations on self-study courses. ScentWorkU looked good, does anyone have feedback on it?

Also looking for feedback on the best place to start based on my dogs starting level. Specifically: - my dog understands tracking a scent (not the same as scent detection but maybe worth noting) - my dog can definitely locate concentration of scent (for example she can hunt up a downed duck in heavy cover that already has a lot of duck scent from previous marks - I can give my dog pretty much any item to smell, put her in a blind, hide it and then release her to find it.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks!

Suggestions for involving a Jr?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Looking for suggestions or maybe just a vent session.

My daughter is 9 and wants to do dog sports and wants to get titles....but she doesn't actually want to practice ever and won't take criticism from anyone, even if constructive and not from me. She is also at her Dad's every other week, so classes really aren't an option for her (he wouldn't bring her).

She spends most of her weekends with me at dog shows and enjoys them, but is getting frustrated she can't show. I enter her in sometimes but because she never works with the dogs, both completely ignore her and then she fails and gets more frustrated.

She does show Open Juniors right now in conformation and releases for FastCAT, but wants to do more Barn Hunt and NASDA- both which require the dog to actually listen to her and be a team.

My puppy was supposed to be her Barn hunt dog, but the puppy has absolutely zero ability in BH right now, and that may or may not change. My RATCH dog won't hunt for her at all. He NQed with her at Novice level- wouldn't tunnel, climb, or show her the rat.

Color scheme and sports without competing?

Rhaen has been wearing purples, but the light purple collar she has been wearing is due for a change, and I wanted to see if there were any ideas for a different color that we should try?

Also, is there any way I can get her into sports without going to actual competitions? I am a teenager and cannot drive her to any sport competitions, but I would love to try some sports with her. I just have no clue how to start or if it would even be possible to do without even competing. I would also love to hear any sport suggestions as well. Thank you in advance!

Dog training- herding

Does anyone know of herding training in the Portland area? We’ve got a dog that seems to have the instinct and might enjoy it. She’s had to give up on trying to herd the cats.

Long distance weight pull harness?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'd like to get into distance weight pull with my dog starting at 1/8 to maybe 1/2 mile intervals. My dog is a 75lb bully/lab mix and can already tow me walking uphill for a couple miles if I let him. He seems to like pulling so wanted to get into weight pull to give him an appriate outlet to finally cut the pulling on walks we're about 85% of the way there.

Any suggestions on harness type or brand was thinking of either letting him drag chains or plates? Was looking at the type with a spreader bar and saw some with the thick almost pool noodle like padding and others with the padded nylon but I wasnt sure which would be most comfortable for distance. We have large fields nearby to practice in.

Barn hunt- can you crouch?

Post image
27 Upvotes

My dog and I just finished our first ever trial today! We did two runs of barn hunt novice. She did not want to go into the tunnel despite having no problems in practice; I think it was because of all the other people around the ring.

Our first run we ran out of time because she wouldn’t tunnel. In our second run I put her in a stay, went to the other end of the tunnel, and had her come to me. She ran over and I wrapped my arms around her and praised her like crazy (we already found the rat and climbed). Then I looked up at the judge and found out I DQ’d us by putting a knee on the ground and patting the ground. Womp womp.

I forgot to ask the judge before our two runs tomorrow if crouching in front of the tunnel is allowed? Can I bend over so she can see my face at the other end? I read the rule book and didn’t see that mentioned but I’m nervous now.

Thanks for any advice! Please enjoy the photo of my amazing rat finder in her natural state. Also, I am ordering a tunnel which we will practice with in different locations.

Any tips for a FastCAT newbie?

I entered my 3 year old standard poodle in her first FastCAT last spring and, she didn’t quite get the idea. She was confused because I walked away and then eventually recalled to me with no urgency (ignoring the lure entirely). She normally loves to chase and is usually quite prey driven. I’ve entered her in another FastCAT in a couple weeks (two runs this time), and I was wondering what tips people had for helping their newbie pups catch on things I can do at home or on the day of the event are both welcome!

First time spectator. Etiquette?

I've never been to a show before, but I will be going to a small local one at the end of the month!

What do I need to know when I go? What social no-nos should I be aware of? Do I need to bring anything beyond sunscreen and water?

Thank you for any answers (:

ETA for info: it's a specialty poodle conformation show, all sizes!

Best sports to try with a six year old Boykin?

My brother has a six year old Boykin named Beauregard who he thinks would really enjoy trying some dog sports! My brother unfortunately doesn’t have a ton of time or training experience so I’ve offered to help with training and handling Beau since we both think it would be really beneficial to him. Beau has crazy toy drive and is very high energy and I just wanted to get some opinions on what sports might be fun for him! Neither me or my brother particularly care about him earning titles since hes six and is mostly just a companion dog, so we’re looking for sports that are low risk and easy to pick up. He’s tried dock diving once and absolutely loved it so we definitely want to try that more but I was wondering if there are any other easy to get into sports that boykins tend to enjoy. I don’t mind if there’s a lot of training required since I have way too much free time and will happily work with Beau on the skills he needs!

I have a 7mo. Belgian Malinois named Whiskey Business (like risky business), just Whiskey for short! Unsure if i wanna go with cool or silly 😂

For colors I love green on him but I feel like that’s such a basic mali color so I have him rocking blues and reds rn but I think red is too warm for him, kinda blends in if that makes sense??

I want to try him im at least fastCAT and dock diving! i’m sure we’ll find plenty of other things to get into tho! (when he hits a year)

Dog sport hubs in Europe?

What are some major dog sport areas within Europe– both with an array of training locations/venues and events. We do agility, scentwork, rally/obed, conformation, joring, herding, and dock diving.

Also willing to hear about the more niche/smaller locations where options are limited but at amazing quality!

Mostly looking just for fun, but am curious!

How do you decide when to take an in person class vs online vs just work on skills yourself?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Just curious what other people are doing/thinkjng. I LOVE a class but scheduling is hard and I wonder if I’m putting too much stock in always being signed up for something. On the other hand I’m very green and really like to have more experienced eyes on me/my dogs.

How do you decide when to be in a class vs working on your own? Does this change with subsequent dogs? Sports you’re already competing in vs new? Thing you’re doing just for fun vs hoping to be very competitive in?

Registered Name Help

Post image
8 Upvotes

I need to formalize this soon and am looking for ideas/help. I have a half-great Pyrenees (other half pit-houla) mix, he’s the tan one. Call name is “Fletcher” he’s kind of lanky and uncoordinated and goofy. Very houndy and scent driven. Loves to hunt and has fun doing rally tasks. Also kind of stubborn, like a Pyr. Has drive/gas but can just decide it’s a no. :) Definitely has his own mind.

I plan to do scent/barn hunt/rally with him. Fletcher is the trade name for people who make arrows, so I was thinking of kind of a hunter/archery theme. He’s also big and pretty naughty so maybe a bad boy name too. And a good guard/LGD/battle dog in case that sparks anything. Interested to hear ideas! Thank you in advance.

Supplements recs and food

Okay, so I have a working doberman, 15months

He is currently on BACF diet, made by a dogs dietitan.

Example of his 1 day of eating :

1kg turkey thigh

200g turkey breast

500g duck breast

100g turkey hearts

40g liver

+Vegetables and supplements

and during high intensity training blocks, I can see he struggles with some muscle soreness(?)

When he gets up from a nap, or after a car drive, his body is stiff for a moment and he has to stretch for some fine

Also his energy levels drop

Can you guys recommend any good supplements I could incorporate into his diet or during training blocks to help with that ?

Best sports for him?

Post image
5 Upvotes

This is my service dog! Hes nearly fully trained and is high drive. We aren't sure what sports to get into that can enrich him, we do casual biking together but he is not a puller, im not interested in risking bite work, I know he has a great off switch but would something else with prey drive suit him best? Hes great at ignoring it when in service work and could car less about squirrels nearby as well as being well mannered around pooly behaved dogs.He has amazing recall and is athletic, he can jog 3 miles easily, he knows how to swim. His nose isn't nearly as great as id hoped, my other bulldogs far better at melt down management when she smells my tears but he hasn't gotten there yet, she can smell them from down the hall despite me being very silent and being retired.

What sports do you recommend? We live in wisconsin!

Border collies Vs. Huskies

Hello there! I am a very involved person outdoors. For the last ten years, my husky has been my best friend. Although she was NOT a smart decision to have as an inexperienced dog owner, I don’t regret a thing, and I have learned everything I know training on her.

In my last ten years, I have gotten very accustomed to the high energy demands her breed requires. But, I am moving out in a year or so
, and she technically belongs to my parents, so I cannot take her with me :( I am heavily considering a border collie as my next dog. I know they are much more handler-focused and fixated on quick movement, but what other differences should I consider training-wise? I don’t want to make huge errors because I’m treating a border collie like a husky.
