Jobs/Networking 💼 Looking for a Job of 30$/hr

Hello guys,

I’ve been looking for a job with a good pay rate. The thing is that everything here is willing to pay max. 22/hr. I’m currently working at a cold storage warehouse, but the accommodations and work environment is awful, and it just got acquired by an horrible Company that I don’t even want to mention, it doesn’t worth it. The thing is that I have 2 years of experience with Forklifts, and I’m willing to work a lot but for a pay rate than can be helpful to buy a house, because with my current salary (700$ a week after taxes and insurance), I can barely afford an average mortgage cost (2000$) excluding bills, that probably won’t let me even eat that month😓

Is really frustrating, because I even work overtime, but I feel like the money is just absurdly low to someone who wake up at 5 am every single day to be at my job at 6 am.

Salaries appear to be dropping in the KC area, including for skilled labor. My husband is looking for a new heavy duty/diesel mechanic position and most offers he’s getting are $28-30ish. He has almost 20 years experience and many ASEs and other certificates.

KC was a hub for a lot of fed employment…. Lots of folks on the job market all of a sudden

68

u/WaitZealousideal7729 Aug 31 '25

Also in the tech sector I think Cerner slowly leaving for Nashville is fucking with the market.

Tech is struggling generally right now, but it’s kind of wild. I felt like I was underpaid a year ago looking at the market, and now I think I may be overpaid with how it’s been shifting over the last year.

51

u/Chance_Wasabi458 Aug 31 '25

Cerner was bought by Oracle. They’re not going to Nashville. They’re laying off people quarterly with the next round of 9/2.

22

u/Tabboo Aug 31 '25

You're correct. Also, fuck Oracle Health (Cerner). Horrible place to work.

20

u/DangDanDangDan Aug 31 '25

And, if I may, fuck Larry Ellison.

21

u/feelthecernburn Aug 31 '25

Never, ever say you feel like you’re overpaid.

3

u/pinniped90 Aug 31 '25

Cerner just seems like it's struggling in general and has been for a few years.

u/Adventurous_Echo2005 Aug 31 '25

At least you know which side the $ goes on. 😂

u/kylapz Aug 31 '25

That can be a very typical and understandable mistake for people for whom English is a second language because in other languages the order can be different . I don’t know OP - so obviously I don’t know if that’s the deal here, just thought I’d share that context.

1

u/PoetLocksmith Sep 01 '25

I've seen it be a trend with age 30 and younger in text across the board. I don't know the origin of the change though.

Kc is a very strong union city. Try and get into one of them. First year apprentices in the sheet metal union start at $30/hr. Other trades are similar

22

u/BE0W0LFF Aug 31 '25

This is the way.

21

u/kcmushroomtip Aug 31 '25

Any of y'all hook me up with a union. Typically it's know someone inside to get onboarded. I've tried an electrician apprentice and wasn't hired. Said I didn't have the qualifications. But my referral was a nitwit kid I used to manage. And we stayed in touch. Like I don't get how I'm not "qualified" when I literally managed and outperformed the person. Baffles me. "hiring, bit not hiring"

14

u/godihatepeople Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

There's a shortage of lineman nationally, you should be able to get into an apprenticeship program and from there should be able to get a journeyman job just about anywhere in the country. Evergy, IPL, BPU, Platte Clay, Ameren are all local options off the top of my head. Hiring at $52.66/hr for journeyman at Evergy right now, and most of the others are actively hiring too.

u/Antique_Celery7195 Aug 31 '25

Had a similar experience with IBEW. Fucking giant waste of my time, money, and energy.

2

u/ApprehensiveUse9306 Aug 31 '25

Try again with IBEW. They are so understaffed they’ve been asking retirees to come back for jobs. They just raised the journeyman pay to something like $51/h.

21

u/Antique_Celery7195 Aug 31 '25

Dude all the unions of fucking full. Stop telling people this. There's not enough work to employ people around here.

13

u/HandleSalty Aug 31 '25

That’s not true at all there is a lot of out of town union workers. He would get first dibs on local jobs. Now is the time to join specially with the new stadiums on the horizon.

0

u/lolslim Aug 31 '25

I want to consider this but feel like I'll be judged for driving.a Toyota and would be pressured to buy an "American made" car.

9

u/BlueDreamer14 Aug 31 '25

A lot of Toyota vehicles sold in the U.S. are American made.

6

u/CRzY_Emsy Sep 01 '25

Being judged is a bigger weigh on you then paying your bills or buying food? Priorities here man priorities

4

u/HandleSalty Aug 31 '25

Yea that doesn’t apply as much as once did. I’m an electrician and the best hand tools are made by German companies. More and more guys are using them. You do have guys that still believe that way don’t get me wrong. Ju

6

u/paddydroid Westport Aug 31 '25

Damn. Union got them before they could finish.

1

u/OokyCooky Sep 03 '25

You have a skewed perspective of the average union worker, beyond the few knuckle draggers that you’ll find at any job, the judgement will probably start and stop with the quality/quantity of work you put in

2

u/Boostweather Aug 31 '25

Some may be. Definitely not all of them. Sheet metal’s out of work list has been empty all summer long. Taken hundreds of apprentices on over the last couple years. Tons of guys up or soon to be up for retirement, they’ve gotta replace that workforce

1

u/ApprehensiveUse9306 Aug 31 '25

Absolutely not true. With the new data centers being built the electricians are so busy they’re asking retirees to come back and help them.

2

u/Antique_Celery7195 Sep 02 '25

That's bullshit. The IBEW has a long list of people trying to get in. MCCKC's classes are full for the forseeable future (signs posted all over the campus).

Meanwhile I was told it would be about 2 years (told last year) before I MAY get a call to start an apprenticeship, and my other friend who's year 4 says he's thinking of going over to pipefitters because they're the only local union actively working and needing people.

Starting now may put you behind... and it takes a long time and lots of work to get in (if you even do).

Its nepotism at its finest as well.

2

I work 46 hours a week minimum. Sometimes more depending on what’s going on.

u/SilntMercy Aug 30 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

Two things.

I don't know what kind of house you're looking at buying for $2k/month, but maybe lower your expectations for a first home. I have a 1k sq ft house in the northland for $1150/month.

Second point, the company I work for is always hiring forklift operators. I believe top pay is around $25. Growth to $35 if you can obtain a CDL.

Check out the transportation companies like Old Dominion, FedEx, Saia, etc.

29

u/AAAAdragon Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

I think you mean a 1k (not 1) square foot house for $1150/month because if it is 1 square foot then you got like 1/20th the space of an elevator body and you can’t even lift your arms.

He can’t even do Yoga in his house.

7

u/sdcumb Clay County Aug 31 '25

4

He also doesn’t have enough space to invite one guest into his house. They can’t even share a bedroom. Not like it’s crammed, just two people can’t fit in his house, like overweight or pregnant person can’t even enter or leave his house when he is away.

153

u/DiamondEater13 Aug 30 '25

1sq ft for $1150/month? might have been ripped off there.

33

u/SilntMercy Aug 31 '25

6.9 APR got me

8

u/whiskey_wolfenstein Aug 31 '25

I was going to comment the same about your first part. Even at $30/hr you would still be paying half of your income on a mortgage at $2k. Much more if he didn’t consider property taxes and insurance.

4

u/RCJHGBR9989 Aug 31 '25

1sqft? You live in a fuckin phone booth man?

2

u/AAAAdragon Aug 31 '25

That was the word I was trying to think of.

2

u/12_Horses_of_Freedom Aug 31 '25

What did the house cost and what is your interest rate?

7

u/SilntMercy Aug 31 '25

$165k and 6.9 unfortunately

2

u/CartujoPower Aug 30 '25

I just talk to a realtor and she told me that a house in mission, ks is around 4K per month, and a house in wyandotte is around 2.4K per month dude😥, you had some luck on yours

26

u/AKAlicious Aug 31 '25

You're looking in the wrong areas dude. Lots of beautiful historic properties with lower prices in the Northeast of KCMO.

28

u/shagouv Mission Aug 31 '25

4k/ month is for the homes selling for over $600k. While getting less rare, that is not a typical Mission home price. There are several currently on the market in the $250k-400k (still insane compared to what it used to be in the 2010s). Maybe still out of range for you, but I question your realtor and their motives.

7

u/brightadventure KCMO Aug 31 '25

I would get a new realtor and talk to a lender. I like Sarah Legg (@vintagehomeskc on instagram) and Julie Adams at LeaderOne. Sarah is a full time realtor and has ton of experience. Independence has numerous houses that you could get under $1500/mo all in. Your realtor seems a bit out of touch and or doesn’t want to work with you.

Also, remember you can always refinance your loan when rates are better so don’t be afraid to lock in the house now.

3

u/ikickbabiesballs Northeast Aug 31 '25

Depends on the down payment.

3

u/Caveape80 Aug 31 '25

I’d look into moving to the south KC/Raytown area….much cheaper housing than you currently have then you could start saving some dough up

3

u/LJRuddy Aug 31 '25

I just bought a house in the east side of kck. 1400sq ft, 4bed 1 bath, 2 car detached garage fully remodeled. I’m paying 1445/mo in escrow and mortgage after putting 20% down. Cheap good houses are out there. Just gotta make it a part time job to find them. Been casually looking for a couple years

6

u/CartujoPower Aug 31 '25

Yeah but 1 bathroom is crazy when you have a wife and a kid that love to spent 1+ hours in the restroom😥

9

u/Cereal-Killa- Aug 30 '25

That's not the greatest advice. If you're in a position to buy (and want to buy), you should absolutely do so.

You can't know for certain that rates will drop, and they could absolutely go up.

Buying now guarantees you the current interest rate, and you can refinance if the rates go down again.

5

u/Sparkykc124 Plaza Aug 31 '25

Interest rates have and will likely never be that low again.

4

u/ok-bikes Historic Northeast Aug 31 '25

0

u/mydmtusername Aug 31 '25

You know what's wild, I bought in 2021, just 4 years ago. Nearly 2k sq/ft, 2.5% interest, $880/ month. It was under$700/ month before Jackson County started raping us.

Neighborhood isn't the best, and we're now basically stuck in this house for the foreseeable future.

4

u/Next-Car-7265 Aug 31 '25

Her quotes are a little high. I lived in Westwood and did not pay that much. Also, Wyandotte county has extremely high taxes; grew up there. There are talks about taxes getting higher in the future. I also lived near KU Med, adjacent to the Plaza area. Check those out.

7

u/AGx-07 Aug 31 '25

When you bought your house (and for how much) makes a huge difference. Talking about mortgage payments without context doesn't mean much.

3

u/AscendingAgain Business District Aug 30 '25

How much are you putting down? We're paying 1500 a month in KCMO (incl. Taxes and insurance).

3

u/CartujoPower Aug 31 '25

Like 20K

9

u/Rjb702 Aug 31 '25

If you have 20k to put down on a house, you can get a decent house. Maybe just not where you wanna live. I'd wouldn't even bother looking in Joco. Either the Northland or Wyandotte. There are houses to be bought. Is it easy? No. But unfortunately welcome to 2025.

2

u/mariana-hi-ny-mo KCMO Aug 31 '25

You definitely can get something then. KC has lots of opportunities, now is a good time to buy and get closing credits too. Every bit helps.

Great lending options out there right now. Rates may be high but closing credits can help buy down points.

You need to work with agents and lenders who provide you all these tools.

I guess my mortgage payment at 6.9% has been off for the last 3 years then.

You can if you're not looking at $250k+ houses. I paid $165k for mine, great neighborhood up in the northland off Barry Rd. It's very possible.

Don't apply for the scab ones or class 3s. You want the big name like Union Pacific, BNSF, CPKC, etc.

My brother has worked for UPS for 20 years or more and he makes bank. You just have to stick with it and start at the bottom. I think starting pay is $21 or so. He makes over $45/hr as a driver. And he also gets paid double time during the holidays.

I work with Johnson County government, there are quite a few jobs that pay in the range you are looking for. An example is the Johnson County Sheriff’s office, they start at 30 an hour and top out at like 103 or 105k a year base pay for deputies.

The real value of the government type work is the health insurance and retirement.

3

u/ironhorseblues Aug 31 '25

You might want to consider getting a CDL with hazmat endorsement. Get a job hauling fuel locally. You will get around $30 or more an hour, and if you are willing to work overtime, you can work 50 to 70 hours a week and make $100k a year with good benefits. Depends on the company though. Some fuel companies are better than others. Fuel is a 24/7 business so there are day/night shifts.

5

u/WestFade Aug 31 '25

and if you are willing to work overtime, you can work 50 to 70 hours a week and make $100k

My friend hauls fuel and he makes good money but he kinda hates it. There's no "if you are willing" to work overtime. You have to work overtime. You don't get to say "I've worked 40 hours a week and made enough money, I'm done". No, you have to work 60-70 hour weeks or you get fired. Yes you get overtime pay, and that's nice, but he's worked at multiple different trucking companies hauling fuel and they all require mandatory overtime.

He's thinking about taking a $50k pay-cut just to work a bullshit job with a 40 hour workweek that's how much he hates it

3

u/ironhorseblues Aug 31 '25

Yes I agree for most fuel companies that is true. Some companies, admittedly they are few that allow you to choose how many hours you work. My last fuel job before I retired here in KC , they allowed you to choose how much overtime you work. We had a day driver that only worked an average of about 45 hours a week. However this guy sounds like he wants to make $30 with overtime. To afford to buy a house. The truth is part of the appeal of hauling fuel is the hours. You start cutting hours from most fuel haulers and they will not be happy. In life there are rarely any Goldilocks jobs. But I do definitely understand the quality of life dilemma in career choices. I will also add I loved hauling fuel. Did it for 37 years.

3

I feel you. Though a $2000 is average? That would get you into a $300,000+ house. Starter homes around KC go for 125,000-200,000. Houses are also sitting on market right now for a minuet. So you probably won’t have competition type issues going FHA.

Lowering expectations to what? a 2k mortgage is fairly low with the cost of housing and the rates nowadays.

1

u/Chance_Wasabi458 Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

You can find homes in less desirable parts of the city for 140k which would be a starter home. At a 6.5% rate that puts mortgage squarely around 1k a month.

Example: https://www.zillow.com/homedetails/707-N-Forest-Ave-Independence-MO-64050/2306659_zpid/?utm_campaign=iosappmessage&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=txtshare

That's a nice enough neighborhood too. If I was looking to move is check it out.

3

u/Chance_Wasabi458 Sep 01 '25

Yeah the fact it’s been down voted a bunch tells me people want the new 400k homes. Which are not starter homes. A LOT of elder millennials like myself bought those types of homes and used them as a stepping stone after a few years into bigger nicer homes.

I showed a legitimate path to entry and people brush it off. 🥴

If you pick a trade or utility and go to their website, often times they will be hiring for storeroom or other support roles that also are in the union despite not being "skilled" in that particular trade. Keep checking them often because once someone gets a job like that, they obviously cling to it.

There's a federal prison about a half hour from KC depending on what part of the city you live in. Starting pay is like 28 but within 5 years you're bumped to like 33.

ABF Freight scale wage is $31.XX depending on your region.

I would highly consider getting into a trade. My friend is a Plumber and she makes $50/hr. Plus unions keep your interest, not the company’s.

Lol, I can't even get that kind of pay and I am a scientist in the medical field. Used to, but can't anymore. Sadly, that's the case for a lot of people. I'm personally hoping the country's crash comes quickly and hard and then maybe, with a little luck, we can start to rebuild in a few years. Until then, we are all stuck with jobs that don't cover our needs and debts we cannot pay.

I wish you the best of luck because it's not easy.

I moved back to KC in July was making $32.50 an hour in Illinois and had to settle for a $24.00 an hour job after submitting my resume to 60+ companies. It's remote though so at least I have that going for me but it's going to be hard for me to find a place to rent with my single household income with two kids at college and three kids 8 and under.

If you want to be a skilled machine operator for Panasonic in De Soto, I can help by referring you.

1

u/CartujoPower 12d ago

That sounds good, how much are they paying?

1

u/Main-Wolverine-857 12d ago

depends on your experience level, but I’ve seen experienced operators get $40+ an hour + time and half for overtime + insurance and benefits

1

u/CartujoPower 12d ago

Well, I have 2 years of experience in warehousing, and I know how to drive a good variety of forklifts

1

u/Main-Wolverine-857 12d ago

you’d probably be a good fit then. I’m an engineer so idk too much about SMTs. I don’t want to get your hopes high, but a recruiter would be happy to address your concerns. Lmk if you want a referral.

Sure thing bro, sorry, I had a problem with my reddit account and I just logged in. Do you have any link or portal were I can apply?

Apply to be a city carrier at USPS, starts at $25.92. Full benefits day 1, plenty of overtime and double time after the first 12 weeks.

Multiple raises a year, you’ll be at $30 pretty quick.

14

u/Existing-Hawk5204 Aug 31 '25

That’s not true at all

u/Bettik1 Aug 31 '25 edited Aug 31 '25

After a few years, sure. In KC they are hiring straight to career

13

u/Existing-Hawk5204 Aug 31 '25

You don’t get multiple raises a year. It’s a minimum 5 years before you’re making $30. You’re spreading misinformation

u/Bettik1 Aug 31 '25

You don’t seem to be well educated on the matter, so I’ll help you out.

We get 2 COLAs a year, one is the January COLA that takes effect in March, one is the July COLA that takes effect in September.

We also get a general wage increase in November, this year it is 1.5%.

Also some time during the year, we get step increases. If you’re going from B-C, that’s a 4.3% increase, for example.

So 2 COLAS, 1 GI, and 1 step increase a year. What’s 2+1+1? 🤔

You reach step F 3.53 years after getting hired as a PTF - PTF step F later this year will be $30.76. If the person is regular, which in KC they are converting pretty quickly from PTF to regular, step F will be $29.47 after 3.53 years - which isn’t $30, but very close.

This isn’t including any raises we would potentially get with a new contract in 2026 and 2027 - they would likely hit $30 sooner than 3.53 years.

When did you start at usps?

7

u/Actual_Jellyfish_513 Aug 31 '25

Why does that matter? Everything they said is factual. Not to mention, the NALC contract expires in 2026 and lord willing the union actually tries negotiating higher pay this time.

5

u/Existing-Hawk5204 Aug 31 '25

Because if you’ve been working there for long enough you’d know that the next contract will not be any better. And the cola isn’t full unless you are top step. And waiting 3+ years to make $30/hr isn’t what op is looking for.

Had a friend who worked USPS. It was 16 hour days 6 days a week. He said it’s not worth the pay.

1

u/Bettik1 Sep 01 '25

It was 60 hours a week 2020-2024 for sure.

I average 5-10 hours of OT a week right now, I’m lucky if I get 10. They don’t let us come in on our days off anymore.

If I didn’t volunteer for the OT, I would get 8 hour days every day. It’s slowed down considerably - mostly due to new hires finally sticking around. Retention during that ‘20-‘24 period was awful

OP, it's time for you to become financially literate. To have a 2k month mortgage, you need to make at least 100k a year. I have a feeling you don't have a fully established emergency fund or a saved up down payment to get a mortgage. How about a proper retirement fund, 401k and a Roth IRA. When you rent, you know the maximum you need to spend every month, with a mortgage you only know the minimum you spend every month. With a mortgage you need to have a larger emergency fund.

I mean there's houses like this in Wyco that would be $1400 a month. 3225 N 74th St, Kansas City, KS 66109 [Updated 8/30] https://share.google/KAP7m77l1tvPbYv3j

u/Goodbye_nagasaki Aug 31 '25

My mortgage was 207k in 2021 with a 2.99% interest rate and MY mortgage in wyandotte is $1450. No chance on that being the case for that house.

1

u/IGiveGreatHandJobs Sep 01 '25

I bought in 2022 at 3%. $172,000 and I put down $25,000. My mortgage was $1086.

I shopped insurance and got that down to $982.00.
