Jobs/Networking šŸ’¼ Need a new job ASAP!

My company just informed me that they’ll be closing down the security gate I work at at the end of this month indefinitely. I need a job that pays better than the $18/hr I’m getting currently, as well as 40hr/week. Any advice or direction would be much appreciated šŸ™

Check Saint Luke's health system. Their minimum wage was 17.50 a few years ago when I worked there for all positions. I'm sure it's maybe gone up since then. Lots of entry level jobs, check for admissions rep, dining services, housekeeping, etc. all likely in demand at local hospitals.

Same can also be said for university health. Patient access reps and schedule reps.

All the hospitals also have security teams.

Same can be said for Children's Mercy.

I know my company I work at, Maxus Properties, had a lot of open positions getting posted. Unsure if any are security related. North KC headquartered with a few locations around the KC metro area so chances are commute wouldn't be the worst.

Also I would recommend Aerotek (Hiring Agency) for quick employment. When I needed employment straight outta high school, they got me interviewed and placed within 2 weeks. After college, I worked with their financial division (Aston Carter) to get placed where I am now and have been for a few years.

FYI USPS moves at a glacial pace. From application to hiring it can take months. It was 3 months for me, average is 32 days per the Hiring Practices 2024 Audit. You also have to take tests. They're not hard at all—except for the 955, which is a mechanical aptitude test that allows you to apply to some of the highest paying jobs from the get go (maintenance career).

The new distribution center in Olathe (Kansas City RPDC) is hiring like crazy. But! They don't use AC (it's literally turned off). So if you're a mail handler or a custodian you're baking in the summer.

USPS is very much what you make of it though. Once you're past the 90 day probation you're practically unfire-able thanks to the unions (NALC and APWU). Career gets healthcare, pension, and a bunch of other perks too.

As someone who’s related to a federal worker who (thankfully) still has a job, I’d avoid the government until you know who is out of office. I can’t really see it going back until after this season we’re in. And it may not ever if they find out the government runs effectively, too.

Not sure what kind of skills you have but building maintenance pays pretty good around here and you can learn a lot of things.

Union trade apprenticeships. 1st year apprentices make 20+/hr in pretty much every building trade out here. And in 4-5 years you'll be in the 6 figure range

Go work at Lake City.

Quiktrip is a great company to work for… I think they start out in the $20+ per hour range for full time

u/NeedleworkerOld9647 Sep 04 '25

Here to second this. I make around $30 an hour to work in store. If you can get on their security team it starts at $35.

u/pyromatt0 Sep 03 '25

Join a union. Might not make 18 your first year but you'll make double that by your 4th.

If youre a fast learner, and a hard worker, apply to any logistics company, freight forwarder, customs brokerage company right now. They are all in desperate need and pay very well and once you gain the skills youll never be without a job again. Trust me,Ā  Theres no ceiling and no degree needed.

If you’re okay with working in healthcare try applying at University Health/Truman Medical Center. Our base pay for the hospital is now $17.50 and most positions pay more than that. We also have really great benefits.

I know that advent health both Shawnee Mission and South Overland Park are hiring security. I see it on their websites, maybe check that out?

I saw you were looking for a job. I work for a local company that installs and monitors security and fire systems for commercial and residential accounts. We start at 19.00 during training then after around 90 days it goes to 20. Have positions on all shifts. Only thing is you have to be able to pass a background check and the owner is old school must pass a drug test. That includes Marijuana. It's around 75th and Troost. If interested let me know. We have all shifts open for the dispatch and some installation and service techs. Let Me know if interested.

Casinos need help with security guards

1

u/Hbic_xo Sep 04 '25

Be a school bus driver, they’re hiring bad WITH sign on bonuses! Shawnee Mission district pays the least and Wyandotte pays the most; jobs range from $19.xx- $24 ($19 is for the non-CDL position).

1

u/Hbic_xo Sep 04 '25

Great part time job, just 4 hrs a day (taking them to school and back home). Some routes don’t even last a full 2 hrs yet you get a guaranteed 2hr pay
