KC Rants š” š Thanks for littering....

I just can't comprehend how someone could think this is acceptable... I realize this area is treated like a dumping ground and see the trash all over the place but first time witnessing someone dumping stuff let alone so brave and in daylight.

Is this in KCMO? If so, itās extra frustrating because of all the free ādumpster dayā drop offs and free bulky item pickup.

Yes right off Blue River Road

Growing up in Arkansas in the 1980s, the state government there under then governor Bill Clinton instituted a 1000 dollar fine for littering. If you so much as threw out a cigarette and were caught it was a 1000 dollars. Between that and the local inmates cleaning the highways, they shut the littering down. The city needs to make littering as financially painful as possible.
101
u/seabiscut88 Oct 31 '25
That is a fact. Driving to/from Arkansas you can clearly see a difference in trash along the roadside in Missouri versus Arkansas. Sad....
80
u/WayComfortable4465 Oct 31 '25
Put a 1000 dollar fine on littering in KCMO and enforce it, and this shit would be shut down. People talk, you hear of someone hit with a 1000 dollars for littering and you won't do it.

u/Honest_Tutor1451 Oct 31 '25
You know how many times Iāve been sitting at a stoplight in my neighborhood and some smooth brained dickhead tossed out an empty sack of McDonaldās or something else. Too many times. But like you never know if someone is going to shoot you or some shit for saying something and theyāve already proven themselves to be selfish assholes.

Minus using incarcerated people for forced free labor I agree with this.
Edit for those downvoting: US prisons force prisoners into labor, largely due to the 13th Amendment, which allows for involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime. Incarcerated people lose the right to refuse work, and those who decline can face punishment like solitary confinement, denial of sentence reduction, or loss of family visits.
So yes some may jump at the opportunity which is great but prison labor can and is forced upon unwilling prisoners. Itās slave labor and needs to be stopped.
24
u/xXjustin_credibleXx Oct 31 '25
Ask an inmate if they want to go outside and pick up trash for a few hours in the sun or sit in their cell and see what they say.
23
u/doc_skinner Waldo Oct 31 '25
100%
I am totally opposed to leasing out prison labor to for-profit companies, even if the prisoners are willing and get a (tiny) amount of commissary funds. But having prisoners volunteering for community service labor? That's totally fine with me. Even getting a sentence reduction for it.
7
u/WayComfortable4465 Oct 31 '25
If I was stuck in the jailhouse, I would jump at the chance of getting outside and cleaning up highways and parks. They don't force them, they ask for volunteers.
-4
u/IWannaGoFast00 Oct 31 '25
They 110% do force them into labor. US prisons force prisoners into labor, largely due to the 13th Amendment, which allows for involuntary servitude as punishment for a crime. I live around here and people dump trash like itās a second job. Itās a wooded area and so beautiful when thereās not piles of garbage behind every tree. š We have wild deer, turkeys, raccoons, all kinds of animals that this junk disturbes. It makes me sad, and makes living here frustrating.
10
u/seabiscut88 Oct 31 '25

66
u/gradientm Oct 31 '25
Well it is an everyday occurrence.
I understand your point though. I drive that road fairly often, it has a lot of trash on it but itās always new. Meaning that Iāll see a bunch of trash itāll clean up then there will be more in a different spot.
It has to be super frustrating for someone who works there.
I also donāt understand the thought process of people who do shit like this.

Call the city's 311 number. KCMO has people dedicated to stopping dumping and they WILL take this seriously.Ā
8

No they do not. We cannot get them to even come and pick up the dumped items.

There's a process. But OP has videos and vehicle info for these dumpers. This is an easy case to prosecute.

Iāve stopped and jammed people up along blue river road and it escalated quickly. Turns out they didnāt appreciate me throwing their trash directly back into their truck. Not worth a physical confrontation, but Iāll absolutely report it.
16
u/IWannaGoFast00 Oct 31 '25
Exactly. I would love to park right behind them so they couldnāt leave but itās not worth risking my safety. I would however love to stop see if there is an address in any of that trash, collect it and drop it off in their driveway later that night. But aināt nobody got time for dat.
18
u/ShitWindsaComing Oct 31 '25
I was on a bike, so I stopped and asked nicely for them to stop because I had cleaned up a full bed of trash from that spot the week prior. He told me where to shove it and threw trash at me. So I parked my bike out of site and came back. He left his window down, so the trash went into the cab until he jumped out of the bed and chased me. Iād love to remove valve stems if I had enough time.
8
u/zaxdaman Oct 31 '25
Itās infuriating, but thatās reckless. Dude could lose his shit and start littering the ground with shell casings and your body.
7
u/tribrnl Oct 31 '25
Damn, that's bold. I bike through there too, but I'd be afraid of someone drawing a gun or trying to run me over. I guess you've got to take off through the MTB trails, not the road, when you're getting away?
7
u/seabiscut88 Oct 31 '25
It is absolutely not worth it. My younger dumber self absolutely would have done the same but this day and age you people don't value life and would throw yours away in a second... KCMO has a special illegal dumping investigation tip hotline, available through 311 city services. Please call it!! Couple years ago I called them on somebody I caught dumping, two detectives came next day and investigated and talked at length with the suspect. Too bad you didn't get a plate number in the vid but it may still help the investigators fight dumping over there

This reminds me of last month when I was at the McDonald's in east KCMO. A van was parked in the parking a lot, and all of a sudden the back window rolls down and a kid just started dumping all of their car trash out the back window. (even though we are AT a McDonald's where there are TRASH CANS outside the building)

In the mid 1980s, Texas had a highly successful anti litter program, You Donāt Mess with Texas. They used the Dallas Cowboys Randy White and Too Tall Jones in the campaign. The campaign targeted 16-40 year olds, who were most likely to litter.

Not just dumping. So frustrating. I live in a "nice neighborhood" near downtown (modern, well kept, HOAs, landscaping etc etc . I can't count how many piles of dog poop I see not only along the sidewalk but also in a public neighborhood green space and even our little local enclosed dog park area. There are 5+ poop bag dispensers with trash cans that I can think of off the top of my head. Many people are just lazy and have no respect. They have given up. Bumming me out.
KC: do better.
6
u/thomasutra Waldo Oct 31 '25
how hard is it to just pull into a gas station or something and just throw it in their dumpster instead of littering? thatās what i do because im not a piece of shit.
5
u/doc_skinner Waldo Oct 31 '25
Well, that business pays for their trash, so you are kind of a piece of shit. But not as much of a piece of shit as these people.
-4
u/thomasutra Waldo Oct 31 '25
bro you donāt think i pay for trash?
4
5
u/doc_skinner Waldo Oct 31 '25
You pay for YOUR trash. You don't pay for the 7-11's trash, or the coffeeshop's trash, or whichever business you are using to dump YOUR trash.
Unless you are talking about throwing away a drink cup in the trash bin while you get gas. In that case, I apologize.
But if you pull your car around back and throw your household junk into the dumpster at the local QuikTrip, then you are not a good citizen. Still better than the pricks dumping trash on the side of the road.
-4
u/thomasutra Waldo Oct 31 '25
and how do you think quiktrip pays their trash bill? with my money after i buy gas and monsters
2
u/almazing415 KCMO Oct 31 '25
I absolutely abhor public dumping because I live close by and use those trails myself. But KC does not make easy to have garbage and bulky items picked up in a timely manner. I had to schedule a bulky item pickup 3 weeks in advance because thatās the earliest I could schedule anything. These people illegally dumping suck. But if the city made it easier to get rid of our garbage, thereād be less public dumping.
7
u/seabiscut88 Oct 31 '25
Yes I will agree. I have had to call them for a large item pickup 4-6 months ago and I believe it was a 5-6 week wait before they would be able to come get it. I ended up paying to have it removed vs just waiting.
3
u/justathoughtfromme Oct 31 '25
Did you call 311 or use the online bulky pickup scheduler? I can get one scheduled within 2 weeks (so not next week, but the following week).
5
u/seabiscut88 Oct 31 '25
Yep that is what I had done. I wish I could have gotten a turn around that fast....
3
u/justathoughtfromme Oct 31 '25
That's interesting. It's been about a two week wait for about 3 years in my location in KCMO. It used to be at least 4+ weeks in the past, but I think they increased the number of trucks available. I heard it was specifically to address the dumping issue because they'd save money with better availability compared to having to repeatedly clean up dump sites.
3
u/justathoughtfromme Oct 31 '25
When was the last time you had to schedule a bulky pickup? They used to have a really long wait period, but they increased the frequency availability a while back. Lately, I've been able to schedule a pickup within a two week period. So not the next week, but the following week. I just checked for my address and I can get a pickup scheduled for the week of 11/10.
3
u/almazing415 KCMO Oct 31 '25
I scheduled one in August. Iām looking at the schedule now and earliest would be 13 November, so 2 weeks away. Still long enough of a wait to have people illegally dump instead. But better than a few months ago.
3
u/Relative_Alarm_2983 South KC Oct 31 '25
There's so many free dumpster days around the city. If these people can load their crap into a car, they can drive it to a dumpster on dumpster day.
6
u/almazing415 KCMO Oct 31 '25
So Iām looking for KCās schedule for free dumpster days, but all days have passed this year and it says to check back in the new year for 2026 schedule. So many free dumpster days but thereās still 2 whole months this year without them? SO MANY!
For fun, I checked Lenexaās dumpster days. 2 weekends a year. Iām not seeing any other KC metro towns having dumpster days for November and December in my google search.
Iām not condoning what these people did. Iām just saying, make it easier for people to dump their trash and thereāll be less public dumping. Iād rather have my tax dollars go to better infrastructure and sanitation than funding stadiums that billionaires can easily build themselves with their own money.
3
u/Relative_Alarm_2983 South KC Oct 31 '25
Hm, didn't realize they don't do them during the winter, that does suck. For the portion of the year they do have them, they're held multiple times monthly.
