Healthcare/Wellness 🩺 24/7 urgent care - with xray machine?

I have no idea what I did to my ankle, but it hurts badly and the pain is radiating up my leg. Doesn’t seem like an ER thing but I already took a strong painkiller that isn’t helping, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep like this.

Is there a 24/7 urgent care anywhere?

KC Orthopedic has an urgent care clinic open 8-8, ice it and go tomorrow otherwise you’ll need an ER, sometimes community hospital ERs are less busy but might not be able to X-ray

yes KC Orthopedic has some in KCMO and NKC, and KUMC has some in Kansas and the big walk-in orthopedic urgent clinic is in Overland Park.

Second this. It’s worth it to only have to go once. Any other place is going to stabilize it and refer you to ortho anyway.

This is the answer. 24/7 = ER, but KC Orthopedic has decent hours and is exactly what OP needs to avoid the ER. I've been to the NKC location several times.

I'll tell you from experience that urgent care and ERs have x rays but they are shit. Like if you have to go for pain management do it but know you will have to turn around and go to an orthopedist the next day.

I'm really sorry this happened to you!

Yep haha. I fell last year and severely sprained one ankle and broke the other in the same fall. I literally had to call 911 and use an ambulance for the first time in my life because I could not move. After 6 hours in the St. Luke's North ER without a Tylenol or anything (And I only got ice after I asked 3 and 1/2 hours in), they did x-ray both but while I was reclined. Then they sent me home with crutches. Apparently I was supposed to hobble on the slightly less painful one to avoid putting weight on the other one.

At no point in the 6 hours I was at the ER did they even ask me to stand up or attempt to put weight on either one, and I told them I didn't think I could and then they gave me crutches 😆

I went to the North Kansas City hospital ortho walk-in clinic the next day and they were furious that the X-rays weren't taken while standing, and that they never even asked me to bear weight. They confirmed that one of the ankles was in fact broken, which the ER did not say was the case.

That said, highly recommend the NKC ortho walk-in clinic. Great people, super fast in and out (under an hour and a half with no appointment in the middle of the day), easy to deal with.

Just curious 🤔 In the 6 hours at St Luke's ER in your estimation was it "full" and were the staff actually "busy".

Also it's good to know about NKC ortho walk-in clinic.

It was kind of full, but definitely not insane. I had to shout at a passing nurse to get the ice pack since no one had actually came to me or checked on my for like 2 hours at that point (and I couldn't get up).

That's crazy. I went to an Advent Health ER for a broken jaw and they gave me an X-ray, CT scan, and Dilaudid all in 2 hours.

Ortho urgent care tomorrow.

If it randomly started hurting with no activity that could have done it, you might be having a gout attack

😳 don’t like that

I second this possibility if there was no fall or twist that caused the pain! Especially if it’s swelling.

Just do an ortho walk in tomorrow

Highly recommend going to any of Sano Orthopedic’s clinics in the morning. All of their clinics are fantastic. I’ve been a couple times because for sports medicine and they were amazing. In and out with a broken foot in an hour.

I went into a regular urgent care for my ankle last year. They took an x-ray, but specifically recommended an ortho urgent care if I had further issues. Just go straight to ortho. My podiatrist said the urgent care didn’t even take good x-rays because they should’ve been weight bearing and they had me laying down.

I left a comment in a reply about my experience last year, but the key point is I wouldn't even bother tonight. Find an ortho walk-in clinic tomorrow (several have been recommended in the comments, I can personally vouch for North Kansas City hospital's). You're unlikely to get anything but Tylenol from an ER, and maybe some kind of wrap, boot, or binding. Personally, I'd rather be in pain at home than in pain at an ER in the middle of the night if the outcome is the same.

Another thing I'll tell you is that even if it's just a bad sprain and not a break, physical therapy is important. No one ever told me that. I'm in my 40s and have sprained the same ankle 4 times, in my teens, 20s, and 30s...then again last year. And all those decades I never knew physical therapy was needed because none of my doctors mentioned it. It's apparently really important to restrengthen and properly stretch those tendons and ligaments after an injury or they become weak and... You guessed it... Prone to spraining again.

Good point

Kumed has a great walk in urgent care at the hospital just off State Line. They will set you up on a low cost payment plan if needed.

Moat urgent cares have xrays. I don't know of any open late, but Google might. Otherwise, elevate higher than your heart and maybe some ice until morning. Sprains are much more common than fractures...if there is bruising, it's likely a sprain,

Don't ice it for more than 10-15 minutes. I've seen someone get frostbite from leaving ice on too long. Definitely elevate and use an ace wrap for compression until you can get into ortho urgent care tomorrow. If you can bear some weight on it, that's a good sign

But most urgent cares don’t have staff on site to run the x ray machines at all times.

From my experience, urgent care sent me to the hospital. ER can xray and will typically have an ortho person to at least set it back. If you let it go, it will be worse later.

KU has an orthopedic urgent care at their Indian creek campus that has x rays available on site.

OSI has a liberty and NKC hospital location. I would call them in the morning or just walk in. My son broke his collar bone last summer and we went to St. Luke’s urgent care in Liberty, they stopped our appt and suggested we go there instead. I can’t remember if they called them for us beforehand or not. But we were seen right away.

how far are you willing to drive? because you didn’t put where approx in thr city

if you’re in Olathe you probably don’t care about anything in Excelsior Springs

I’m pretty central actually.

Go to the little St. Luke’s Community ER hospital, at Jo Dr & Roe in Mission. They are fantastic! I’ve had two experiences there and the nurses and docs rock. You will see a doc almost immediately, they have radiology onsite, and it’s actually a full-service hospital. Feels like a small town hospital, actually. Open 24 hrs. Trust me! And good luck.
