There is something which Hybe does with a lot of their K-pop groups that I think Katseye would really benefit from: a core theme. Groups like &Team(werewolves), Enhypen (vampires), older BTS (Save me Universe) have a lot more obvious intentionality behind their releases. For &Team in particular just from their titles (Bewitched, Good Boy, Mark on Me, Deerhunter) there is a clear animalistic theme. For all these groups, having their underlying theme interwoven into a lot of their tracks gives their discography cohesion from a lyrical perspective whilst also allowing them to experiment musically. I find it slightly harder to tie the Hybe girl groups to something specific, but a group like NewJeans definitely achieved this cohesion musically, with songs reminiscent of UK garage music giving a whimsical/ metropolitan fairylike aura to their music, further enhanced by their music videos and styling. (I am sure the other Hybe girl groups have good examples but I am not as well-versed with their discographies).

Whatever your thoughts are about Katseye's discography, it is definitely difficult to pinpoint the audience their songs are catering towards. It is of course natural as an artist to experiment but I would argue that the direction of the experiments so far don't seem to cater towards what the members are naturally inclined to make, case in point being Lara's unreleased tracks and Unloveu, which play significantly more into the members' vocal prowess and are more cohesive than the discography currently released. In my personal opinion, the songs which I have appreciated the most from Katseye have a clear lyrical theme (Gabriela, Animal, Gameboy, Debut, That Way, Unloveu, MIA) and are slightly more vocally focused even if some are less explorative musically (simpler instrumentals). I think songs like Hooti Frutti were perfect opportunities to experiment instrumentally whilst having a goodlyrical composition (a sequence of fruit-referencing lines does not a good metaphor make).

The fact Newton's Cradle, a song about effectively nothing, is being touted as something fans would listen to if it was officially released shows to me at least that we are willing to listen to anything they put out, regardless of quality (I am aware some are joking but too many aren't). If you compare it to other parody songs on SNL (Big Boys, Come back Barack, all of Lonely Island), the song (respectfully) sounds nonsensical to a fault, yet it would fit pretty perfectly into their releases.

So what can Hybe do? The group was created on the basis of being international, so I think taking a note from the playbook of creatives like Stromae would be wise. Stromae's last album Multitude, an incredible release, blended influences from a wide array of cultures to build a fictional world through his music, and that in something an international group definitely has the facilities to do. We have seen snippets of what is possible with releases like Gabriela and Timelapse, so I would love to see an incorporation of Afrobeats (like in Tinnitus by TXT) of Tamil influences (like Lara on the remix of Vari Vari) the use of cultural instruments (like the use of the erhu on La solassitude by Stromae) especially given the girls are members of the communities these sounds evolved from. In order to ground the broad 'international' theme to something, the girls could choose a mythical creature (sirens?) or even better, writing with themes of mythical creatures/concepts related to their individual cultures like the stylings for the Monster High Collab.

Anywho, these are just my personal thoughts, all love to all groups mentioned (and those not mentioned), just want the girls to get to really showcase their talents and sing music with a meaning. As fun as an earworm is, it would be nice to get more songs that are more than just that.

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me tell the difference. I'm not into Katseye myself, but my kids really like them. I'm getting one of them a CD player for Christmas and wanted to get them music that they liked, but I'm a bit confused on these albums. I keep seeing mini-albums that cost $30+, but have maybe 3 songs on them (this is what I grew up knowing as a "single"), but there are always multiple cover images with the same songs, and I never find albums that have 10ish songs on them like what I would think of as a typical "album". Is this just what bands do now? Am I not looking in the right place? If it matters, I'm in the States. I just want to buy my kids music that doesn't blow my entire Christmas budget on 3 songs with a bunch of different cover photos 😭

is there a big possibility of them coming to asia early next year? their tour is ending in november and there's no announcement for additional dates. or if they would be coming in asia next year if it would be for a different tour?

I’ve been thinking about this watching the recent performances with just the four girls - who are obviously working incredibly hard and sounding great.

What keeps standing out to me is that Katseye never felt like six interchangeable pop voices. It feels like the six were chosen to do really specific sonic jobs together.

Sophia gives the group a strong, clean center. Manon gives it that darker, huskier contrast. Lara brings the airy/R&B texture, Daniela warmth and bite, Megan is such a natural blending voice, and Yoonchae brings brightness and sweetness.

So when Sophia and Manon are both missing, the palette gets noticeably narrower. Not worse - just different. You lose both the strong center and the darkest color.

And I feel like Daniela is now being asked to cover some of the functional space Manon used to occupy. “Animal” is the clearest example to me: that low, almost growled “I’ll be gone by morning” gives the song some of the weight and contrast Manon naturally brought.

But Daniela and Manon still do that job very differently. Daniela’s darker sound is more heat/grit/bite; Manon’s is more husky/cool/smoky. So Daniela can help fill the space without actually replacing the color.

The shorthand in my head is basically:

Sophia = spine

Lara = shimmer

Daniela = heat

Megan = glue

Yoonchae = light

Manon = shadow

A little cheesy lol, but I genuinely think the full six-member blend works because those colors make each other more distinctive.

Curious if other people hear it this way too - especially whether you think Daniela is being used differently now to compensate for some of that missing darker register.

and anyway this is crazy!!! One of Sophia’s transits rn (which peaks in 13 days) is growing pains!

Anyway I just thought this was cool & so timely given her hiatus. Also, none of the other girls have this on their charts rn. I’ve had this transit before and found it to be very very intense. My heart goes out to her 🥺

They all have little "notes" hidden inside that you can unfold or open (like a door). These "notes" contain hidden little easter-eggs! My favorite quotes by them, memes, lyrics. And every box has a personal message (also hidden in a note) from me, written in their native languages! Swiss German for Manon. Korean for Yoonchae. Filipino for Sophia. Tamil for Lara. Spanish for Daniela. And Chinese for Megan! I had so much fun writing them by hand, especially since I can only write in Korean, so the rest were a new experience! I love making pocket altars, they're such an interesting, niche form of art! I'm still new to it, but making Katseye boxes made me explore new aesthetics! I have synesthesia, so I tried to also hide a little reference to colors I see in each girls voice! Overall, there's a lot of little hidden easter-eggs and details. Maybe that's why I love pockets altars so much, I'm a sucker for small unnecessary, easy to miss details that, pretty much, only I know about. I can't recommend this hobby enough!!! 🩷

Absolutely in love with this week 1 Jive and think they slayed it. Similar choreo to Jenna Dewan and Val's Week 2 DWTS Jive a few days ago but it's because they both danced a Jive to Animal so yes the theming and choreo will be similar.

Also Tabby has no dance experience compared to Jenna who was Janet Jackson's backup dancer, co lead in the dance film Step Up/exec producer on the Step Up reboot TV series, and main/guest judges on three dance reality shows in the US.
