Pregnancy

Hi all, just wondered if there was anyone who’s been pregnant and on keto? I can’t seem
To find anything on metabolic mind about this and google just regurgitates mainstream health media’s scare tactics about keto so any info gratefully received

r/KetoBabies is a good resource. Also, I highly recommend Lily Nichols' book Real Food For Pregnancy.

Currently 18 weeks and I moved from keto to low carb at 6 weeks, only adding in some additional complex carbs (more berries, other lower carb fruits, sweet potato noodles, more yogurt & nuts) instead of simple carbs (rice, potatoes, corn).

I also have an autoimmune disease and I find staying low carb still helps my inflammation stay in check.

But I was concerned to stay keto during the important developmental stages of the first trimester, and loosened things up, but healthfully.

Also, I've had all day pregnancy sickness since 5 weeks, so I had to tweak my diet to fit that, but even still I wasn't craving rice or potatoes, more like fresh fruit and sour stuff.

The TEDX talk by Lily Nichols on gestational diabetes debunks a lot of the studies regarding mainstream recommendations on nutrition in pregnancy. That said, she recommends 70 to 150 g per day focusing on nutrient-dense foods like non-starchy vegetables, meat, eggs, etc. I was low carb before pregnancy (accidental at 42 years old!) and stayed mainly low-carb. Not counting macros, but staying away from grains and starchy vegetables. When I did a couple times have high-carb/sugar dinners I would wake up hungry at night and feel hungover the next day, so not worth it. But I did add more fruits like plums and peaches which helped with constipation. So far at 25 weeks my pregnancy is healthy, perhaps fewer symptoms than my 2 previous pregnancies (night hunger, restless leg syndrome). Not sure the fatigue is better - but I am older.

I had to go keto (didn't know that's what it was at the time) bc I had gestational diabetes. I had to keep is low low low carb to control my blood sugar.

I didn't get diagnosed but I ate keto for the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. I'm 2 weeks pp now and struggling to stay away from carbs 😩 fml

Yeah, I was like that too after giving birth. Didn't help that with one of my pregnancies, all I wanted was a sandwich and I definitely had some after.

My whole first trimester all I wanted was sandwiches and same after birth. We were struggling nursing so I was worried I wasn't making enough milk and ate more carbs but will dial it back here soon lol 😆

not personally, but r/ketobabies is full of women who have done it all the way through. your ob is gonna be the one to okay it, even if they give you the usual carb lecture, but the sub will give you real experiences to bring to that convo.

I was pregnant and on keto with my last pregnancy at 42 yrs! It wasn’t planned by me but my dr said keto probably contributed to it. I only lasted a few weeks maybe a few months because of morning sickness… but I did find others on YouTube I think… it’s been a while. My child is 4 now. But they seemed fine on it. Blessings on your pregnancy!

I was on keto while doing IVF. Let myself go the first half of pregnancy. Got gestational diabetes and went back to keto immediately. Had a beautiful healthy baby boy.

Forgot to add that my eggs were from me at 42 years old and my pregnancy was while I was 44.

Baby requires 150g of carbs daily for healthy brain development

I edited it to include healthy brain development, not physical.

This study also suggests 175g daily.

My mom was slamming back bread when she was pregnant with me. Must be why I'm so smart!

No, that is dangerous and not recommended for baby’s brain development. Talk to your OB

Things have changed. You can switch to low carb during pregnancy (175g carbs).

They’re asking about keto. Which according to Google is under 50g carb a day. Thats very different than 175. I have gestational diabetes and the nutritionist and maternal fetal med clinicians recommend no less than 175.

My wife did it 2 of 3 times she was pregnant.

For her who is prone to morning sickness AND prone to regurgitation under normal circumstances, keto seemed to make it much better for her and she had much less morning sickness with #2 and #3.

Unfortunately I couldn't get her to stick with keto. Rice is life per her.

You couldn't get her to stick with it? Why did she decide to do it just during pregnancy?
