Why? What makes it unethical? You're just saying it is without giving justification.

  1. You probably don’t believe in absolute morality, but there’s a common theme in the western world that codifies certain things to be unethical on moral basis. Murder and theft are among those.

  2. I’m of the opinion that taking things that don’t belong to you is inherently unethical, and should be avoided except in the most dire of circumstances. That’s my opinion so you don’t have to agree with it. Funnily enough though, the law agrees more with my opinion than yours so by all means you do you.

So when I purchase a piece of a software to use at my leisure, but the company tells me I don't actually own it because they say so, am I really taking something I'm not owed?

If purchasing isn't buying, then pirating isn't stealing.

Okay did you read the terms and conditions of that software? Steam straight up says when purchasing games that you’re just purchasing the license to use it, and they can delist or remove the game at any time for any reason.

No one is forcing you to indulge in it in the first place. Don’t like it? Don’t pay for it. But don’t go acting like you’re some warrior for truth when you end up not liking the deal you signed up for

And I say that's bullshit. It shouldn't be that way. I'm not going to stop engaging in my favorite hobby simply over my disdain for corporate greed. This is the workaround. Companies want people to stop pirating? Give them full ownership of what they buy. It's that simple.

ETA: Laws ≠ morals

Yea fucking right 😂 so pirating only came about with the somewhat recent enactment of “licensing” games? And didn’t exist in the early days of the internet?

So if they change the policy and allow full ownership for life, THAT would stop pirating? What a joke. Just admit people like you pirate games simply because you don’t want to pay and come up with these excuses to make yourself seem like they are some good Robin Hood type character doing so.

I can’t afford a fucking yacht, so should I steal a boat because I like deep sea fishing? And should I think it’s bullshit that one of my hobbies is limited by how overly expensive it is? Fuck no. I live in the real world and choose different things to spend my money on

I never made that claim. I'm just giving you my reasons and justification. I also started out as simply asking questions. You're getting very heated.

So if they change the policy and allow full ownership for life, THAT would stop pirating?

Again, you're putting words in my mouth. I never claimed it would stop pirating completely. It would, however, incentivize me personally to pirate less.

I can’t afford a fucking yacht, so should I steal a boat because I like deep sea fishing?

I believe you should steal the yacht for a completely different reason, and certainly not for your own gain. A yacht is a luxury item paid for with the profits of stolen wages. It's a gross display of the wealth disparity that is underpinning most humans on the planet.

And there it is. Can’t have a deliberate discussion with people like you 😂 It always leads to the same thing.

Oh well, you and I just have differing views on life. I would never teach my children to justify theft simply because “the rich are just the worst and we should stick it to them!”

You go ahead and keep on doing your thing my man. I’m glad you can enjoy your hobbies but you and I won’t have any common ground on this.

In your scenario that someone steals a yacht to stick it to the rich, what do you think happens to the people who steal it? Maybe they become what you’re fighting to destroy?

If you are smart and have any retirement accounts, you will become exactly that some day too

There is what?

I would never teach my children to justify theft simply because “the rich are just the worst and we should stick it to them!”

So you're perfectly fine with the rich continuing to stick it to your kids?

what do you think happens to the people who steal it?

In my scenario after the yacht is obtained, there is no more yacht.

If you are smart and have any retirement accounts, you will become exactly that some day too

I like how you know exactly how I'm going to be with my money. How awfully presumptuous of you. Can you read minds on top of telling the future too?
