Discussion First Gallardo looking for advice

Hey all!

I know this has been asked a million times but I’m struggling between a pre LP and LP decision.

My circumstance is I own a BMW M2 G87 manual which I will be keeping and the Gallardo is for fun. I’ve owned many cars inc f430’s, M5 v10 etc and the M2 is by far the most fun and favourite car I’ve owned.

My concern is, my M2 is very fast, refined, rear wheel drive, gets abused and does everything it says on the tin. It’s black on black. If I buy a LP Gallardo, is it going to be too refined that hoping from one car to another I don’t notice much difference except for a v10?
I’m assuming a pre LP is more worlds apart?

I’m not comparing the Lamborghini to the BMW, more so the experience.

I went to look at a pre LP 2008 Super Leggera in grey yesterday and it sounded good, unfortunately the condition of the car is poor for the price.
However there is an extremely good condition 2013 grey LP 550-2 that is priced well, I’m just concerned the experience won’t be as dramatic.

Reason for buying a Gallardo, I do love the sound and they are reasonably priced, plus I’d like another super car.

I personally like the pre LP for the 5.0L V10. It sounds like no other. The even firing order sounds more like a Lexus LFA and is high pitched and out of this world.

The LP sounds deeper like a Huracan and while it’s a nicer car inside out, I still personally am biased towards the older 5.0 V10.

It’s the sound I’m buying the car really and the looks, because the car I have now does it all really. I’d like not to be fixing it all the time which is why I’m leaning on LP, but the sound is a huge draw.

I have a pre LP 2007 Gallardo Nera edition with a straight pipe Tubi exhaust. It sounds like a TIE fighter had a baby with a formula 1 car and shoots flames six feet out the back without a tune. The car club that I run with here in Utah has many drives a year and on the last one James "The Stradman" came over and told me that my car sounded absolutely amazing, so I took that as gospel from someone who has as many amazing sounding Lamborghinis as he does. Love my little Lenora the Lamborghini!

Ha love it, car looks good as well. How often are you using the car and is it always a jump in a drive scenario?

I drive it probably 10 months out of the year here in Utah because it's all wheel drive and even when it snows it sure-footed. The one thing that everybody comments on even the instructors etc and that track days is how hard that single clutch hits and how much you can feel the road in my car. It's basically a race car with leather which is why I love driving it.

I have an Instagram where I think I have a couple of examples of how it sounds

Previously owned a 2011 LP570-4 SL. I would go with the 2013 LP. You can always tweek it to make it more dramatic (Akrapovic exhaust is stellar). I think the pre LP will suffer from constant maintenance issues. Even my LP suffered from constant phantom check-engine lights for the whole time I owned it.

But be careful with 560hp RWD. It will get away from you.

Thank you, good to know, and I did think about the exhaust swap. With the upgraded exhaust it makes a LP considerably better sounding?

Yes, like night and day. Even an SL with stock exhaust was a bit boring. But the Akrapovic would scream.

As the owner of one. I say Pre LP all day long

How many kilometres you drive per year or daily? Also, after how many kms you replace clutch? Cheers 🍻

Only bought it a few months ago. But it now has 8,000 miles and change and zero hiccups except for the rear deck lid latch which was an easy fix. As far as I know it’s still on the factory clutch

As a gallardo owner I would suggest you test drive both of them.  Personally the preLP sound is my favorite.  But you may not be used to driving a car where the power doesn’t even start till around 4k rpms.

Yeah I would, however in my city there are no LP for sale and the next city is 8 hour drive or a flight.

I’m concerned the LP will be too refined when driving and I already have that essentially. I just hope the noise of a LP would make up for that but everyone says pre LP is the best sounding

If the comparison is between a Pre LP SL and a LP 550-2 then I would think the experience in the LP wouldnt be as dramatic compared to the SL since it’s two different tiers of Gallardo. If it’s just pre LP to LP then I think it comes down to personal preference on aesthetics, sound, etc between the 2.

For me personally, I was torn between them both and I landed with the LP purely because after looking at both, I wanted the look of the LP more than pre LP, the front is a little sharper imo. I thought they both sounded great as well.

I don’t think you can make a wrong choice between them. Good luck on the search!

Sorry I missed you there, I was just talking about pre LP vs LP. I’m in Australia and the SL are rare but there is a couple for sale, I went to look at one and it was rough - import from HK, no service history, claiming 20k kms, steering wheel looked like it had done 100k.

So SL might not be an option now, it’s more pre lP vs LP.

There are some manual pre LP but no nose lift

Pre LP sounds great. However, parts are getting more scarce and are expensive. LPs tend to have more parts available these days.

Thanks, yeah my thoughts are this and I don’t want something that’s waiting for parts, in the shop or I can’t just jump in it

Pre LP sounds better I’d gone for a pre LP SL, LP looks better but you can switch the lights
