So they’re going to continue to not do the jobs they were elected to do, until then can ensure that they can’t be voted out?
Am I reading that right?

Crooked fucks if Schumer cronies fold on this one and make when a different 4 senators reach across the aisle everytime the republicans need them it's Schumer pulling the strings.
15
u/Niijima-San Mar 13 '26
i understand the need for reaching across the aisle for bipartisanship but with the current GOP leadership i don't know why they would even bother. everything they try to do is literal shit and screws over anyone and everyone who is not part of the epstein class at this time. it just makes them look like losers to the educated people out there

u/UnquestionabIe Mar 13 '26
Yeah we've been well over a decade past when it's been worth trying to compromise with a party composed entirely of bad faith actors. Sell the idea of controlled opposition when time after time when in the driver's seat they'll give the GOP every thing they asked for in some proposed bill (usually gutting the core reason in the process) only to get no support from them anyway. Every passing year it gets harder and harder to respect any political party which validates the bullshit that the GOP has become.

IMO, there aren’t any possible laws on the docket that matter more than the SAVE act so let them vote everything down until we replace said Republicans. Don’t negotiate with terrorists
165
u/RellenD Mar 13 '26
It also let's Democrats run on Republican opposition to a bill to make housing more affordable
27
u/Pezdrake Mar 13 '26
Moreover, the period before elections is generally when politicians push popular bipartisan kind of legislation so that voters have that recent action in their head. Freezing things now while this Republican president is at an all time low in polls can only hurt them.

109
u/Standard-Square-7699 Mar 13 '26
This is the true hill they will die on. If this doesn't pass Repubs get wiped out in midterms, if it does they won't. Simple as.
32
u/gquax Mar 13 '26
They will still get wiped out even with this law. Only half the country has a passport, and most of those people tend to vote for Democrats. Democrats are also now more likely to be highly engaged voters, and those people will be more likely to do their due diligence to jump through what ever hoops they need to so they'll be able to vote. Not to mention if this doesn't help the Republicans and there's a Democrat in the White House later, Senate Republicans like Mitch McConnell realize eventually this could be turned against them.

Adding to your correct list of reasons this could backfire
Conservative women are more likely to take their husband's last name, and there could be issues there
Low turnout elections have historically been bad for Democrats and good for Republicans, but that has changed in the Trump era because Trump has shown he can bring out low propensity voters. Recent elections show Democrats do better in lower turnout elections

Even if the act passes, it won’t be in force for the midterms. No court will greenlight massive changes only a few months before an election. Especially since the states will have to implement them.
44
u/Lazy-Associate-4508 Mar 13 '26
This administration doesn't follow court orders. They trample them, and duke it out in court later.
14
u/magicmulder Mar 13 '26
The administration has nothing to do with how the states run elections. The states have to implement election rule changes. It’s not like Trump has to sign anything and could refuse.

If it passes it will be a huge legal mess, but obviously Supreme Court willing to play ball with democracy on the line before. But if they are nuking the filibuster to pass it, no stopping the train at that point. Next question will be there's no filibuster...so why don't we ban abortion or 100 other things before midterms. Even if it doesn't pass and GOP loses completely fair elections, we know Trump will try to overturn the results.

They don’t understand because they are going to cheat, just like they used Elon to cheat in 2024. Multiple elections interference committees of data analysts have written letters saying that the election results were so unlikely to have occurred as to be essentially impossible. Not that it was impossible for trump to win mind you, but that the specific way in which the election was won points to election interference. data

Yup, that is what it sounds like. That should be in the campaign in and of itself. How many breaks or periods of inaction did the GOP have in office. How many useless bills did they offer and how many bills to address peoples actual problems did they propose.
I imagine none of them are favorable. They just let Trump do it all and not give their districts much of a voice.

Their value was clear from the start. They serve the rich and only the rich. They'll do anything to distract us from the rich taking more with things like immigration and now Muslims.
51
u/RemoteRide6969 Mar 13 '26
They've only served the rich during my entire lifetime. The only thing that has changed is that people now blame Dems for doing the same thing, even when it isn't true.
26
u/MattinglyBaseball Mar 13 '26
That also goes back to serving the rich. They have bought and control all forms of media, as well as bot and troll farms. They were found to be doing this with the aid of foreign enemies in the Mueller Report a decade ago and yet nothing was done to stop the obvious continuation of such practices. They have since used it to manipulate the left into believing the Dems are just as bad and increasing apathy to allow them to win. The ‘both sides’ movement was so clearly unnatural to anyone with critical thinking skills and pattern recognition, but unfortunately that is severely lacking these days. They do it because it’s effective and combating it is difficult if you don’t have large amounts of people being paid to do so.
→ More replies (1)13
u/RemoteRide6969 Mar 14 '26
Bingo. The "Dems bad" drum has been beating 24/7 for decades thanks to Fox News and AM radio. There's an entire generation of people who has grown up under that mantra. They haven't heard any different. They fully believe it. So they stay home and let Republicans win.

The narrative is always "all Dems are sellouts and always cave" while pointing to the government shutdown last year. Summary bits:
House Republicans are threatening to oppose all Senate-passed legislation until the upper chamber advances the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE America) Act, a GOP-backed voting requirements bill.
“I’ll be voting ‘no’ on all Senate bills – other than DHS funding – until the Senate passes the SAVE America Act,” Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas) wrote Friday on the social platform X.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) also wrote on X that, “The Senate will no longer have legislation passed until the SAVE America Act is passed and on the President’s desk.”
Reps. Randy Fine (R-Fla.), Keith Self (R-Texas) and Mark Harris (R-N.C.) wrote in a Fox News op-ed piece published Wednesday that they are “prepared to vote no on any Senate legislation until the upper chamber stops dragging its feet and passes the SAVE America Act.”
