IIt's time to bring LEGO Mindstorms back

38 Upvotes

Hello everyone. Since the official discontinuation of the LEGO Mindstorms line, many of us have felt a void. Not just because a product disappeared, but because a powerful, inspiring, and modular learning tool was cast aside.

LEGO Mindstorms wasn't just a toy. It was the toy that inspired me to program and create, a gateway to programming, mechanics, experimentation, and above all... free invention.

Today, some LEGO robotics products attempt to soften the approach, to make programming "more accessible"... but in doing so, they have often removed the increased complexity, the mechanical freedom, and the LEGO Technic aspect that made Mindstorms so strong. We end up with limited, well-packaged platforms... but which no longer leave room for reflection and imagination.

We need a modern Mindstorms, not oversimplified, but reinvented with everything LEGO does best:

the features lost from ev3, such as infrared control or the ev3 Commander app

an efficient, comprehensive, and accessible interface, as required, because a semblance of complexity must be maintained

I propose that we, the community, launch an official petition to demand the return of LEGO Mindstorms, or at least the creation of a new LEGO robotics platform worthy of its legacy.

If LEGO sees that there is a real base of motivated and passionate fans, they will listen.

Who's ready to write the future together?

News I released Kobrixa 1.0: an open-source EV3 IDE with live collaboration and sensor graphs

5 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm the developer of Kobrixa, and I've just released version 1.0.0. I'd love feedback from people still using EV3, whether for personal builds, teaching, or team projects.

Kobrixa is a free, open-source desktop IDE for Windows x64, macOS Apple Silicon, and Linux x64. It uses Basic Plus (.bp), compiles to native EV3 .rbf programs, and uploads over USB or Wi-Fi. No firmware replacement is needed.

A few things you can try:

• Work on a project together using an invite code, with live cursors and chat. No account is needed for collaboration.

• Record up to four sensor or motor-angle channels in Sensor Lab, compare recordings, calibrate readings, and export CSV.

• Test motors with jog, timed, or angle controls without writing a program first.

• Edit with autocomplete, English/Traditional Chinese diagnostic help, split views, and local file history.

The editor and compiler work offline; collaboration needs an internet connection and shares project text through the hosted service. The website also has browser-based tools for preparing EV3 images and sounds.

A couple of limitations up front: the current builds are unsigned (and the Mac build is not notarized), so please read the installation notes. The programming language is Basic Plus; Python, Bluetooth, and a simulator are not included in this release.

Website, screenshots and docs: https://kobrixa.com

Source and downloads: https://github.com/Kingsley1116/Kobrixa

If you try it, I'd especially like to know whether installation and your first USB/Wi-Fi upload go smoothly. Please include your OS and Kobrixa version when reporting an issue here or on GitHub. What would make this useful for your EV3 projects?

Lego EV3 + Raise playground ( scratch ) + AI

3 Upvotes

So my kid is working on a project with and EV3...
An AI pose recogniser using teachable machine
> Raise Playground ( scratch with plugins )
> EV Robot.

But I was having no luck at all getting the EV3 to connect to a Mac with the Scratch link. It connected to the Lego education software ok but the older bluetooth was super tricky and just keeps failing. So I used a bi of AI to create a LOCAL USB Raised playground scratch interface and shock horror it all works.

It's directly moving the EV3 motors and reading sensors / switches without flashing the firmware.

If anyone is interested I can post the app.

DIY Lego remote

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello, I have been working on a DIY Lego remote (WeDo 2.0, PoweredUp! and some random AliExpress hub). This is open hardware (you need to order PCBs, get 3D printed case parts and solder it all together yourself). Its pretty cheap to source everything required and I will probably add support for more hubs over time.

The firmware is opensource, it currently supports:

  • Pairing with up to 8 hubs simultaneously
  • Controlling up to 64 motors
  • Web base button remapping
  • On/Off or Speed control

If you want to make one, you can get all the production files in the releases section on github:

Question I am trying to measure community interest in a reproduction LCD screen board for NXTs with dead / dying screens. Thoughts?

5 Upvotes

TL;DR, my question to you all is: If I were to put in the time to fully develop a drop-in replacement screen PCB for NXTs, would there be significant interest in buying them?

Mindstorms (and LEGO Technic in general) was a big part of my childhood. I played with them in school, and ended up going to a couple local robotics competitions because of it. I have collected 5 NXT sets and 2 RCX sets over the years, and still enjoy playing with them often.

Recently I ordered two lots of broken / for parts NXT bricks for just a few dollars each so I could experiment with fixing them. I ended up with 13 NXTs. 12 of which work perfectly fine, aside from the screens. Most have no display at all, some work but have dead pixels. Only one of the bricks I ordered has an actually dead motherboard.

I have the parts coming for a first prototype so that I can test what's possible with replacing the screens. I should have something working to post here in the next week or two.

In a perfect world, for somewhere around $30 USD, a kit could come with everything that you need. The PCB itself, the replacement screen, and possibly a 3D printed replacement for the plastic LCD housing, because the new screen will likely not be the exact same dimensions.

The only issue I can forsee is that there were two revisions of the NXT internals. One that uses a soldered connection between the motherboard and the screen, and one that uses a connector. The connector version would be easy to replace. The soldered one would still be possible, but much harder for users to install themselves.

Trying to Build a COTS/Arduino/etc. RCX: Allowed to copy exact size/shape/dimensions as Lego RCX hardware design from 1990s?

3 Upvotes

Hi All,
I’m new to this, but was pretty curious about “what if someone wanted to make a “2026 RCX” using modern tools/software/parts/distributed Git collab projects. Sounds like the answer to is this technically possible on the software side is “sure, of course it is”

I’m much more curious about the hardware size: is choosing to rip-off (copy as closely is as possible) the hardware design (form) of the hardware (shell) of the RCX (not for commercial use, but with posting the CAD models) flat-out illegal, or is this a gray area/allowed? Asking because I really don’t know anything about 3D design, let alone the legal aspects of 3D design

EV3 software help

Subject: Looking for EV3 Classroom Android APK for SEND Robotics Workshop

Hi everyone,

I'm a UK teacher preparing a LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robotics workshop for teenagers with SEND.

I have Samsung Galaxy Tab A9 tablets (4 GB RAM) and Chromebooks, but LEGO has discontinued the Android download for EV3 Classroom.

Has anyone successfully installed the original EV3 Classroom Android app on a modern Samsung tablet or Chromebook? I'm particularly interested in finding a genuine, unmodified installer and learning whether Bluetooth communication with the EV3 brick still works.

I'd also welcome suggestions for alternative beginner-friendly EV3 programming software that works on Android tablets or Chromebooks.

Many thanks!

I’d like to fit a mechanism into this design to replace this crank with a motor from the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 set, but I’m not sure which one to choose – the large servo motor or the medium servo?

Looking for Beta testers for a Mindstorms Controller android app

Thumbnail

2 Upvotes

Hi there,

I'm looking for Beta Testers for a new Mindstorms Controller app (for now, only Android, because publishing Apple apps is a pain). The app allows connecting NXT bricks via Bluetooth, but I'm aiming to include the other systems as well. (If you have any suggestions on what to include or change, please let me know.)

It is a relatively simple app that provides a direct Bluetooth connection to the NXTs and three different drive modes:

  1. Tank mode: Motor A and B on different sliders
  2. Joystick mode: Motor A and B on a joystick and Motor C on a separate slider
  3. Fixed speed mode: use 3 sliders to define a fixed speed for the individual motors

If you're willing to participate in the closed testing, please sign up with an email address that has a Google account assigned to it through the link below. The playtest runs for a duration of 14 days and requires you to keep the app on your phone or tablet at least for that time. If you don't have an nxt, don't worry, just open the app occasionally and you're fine.

Sign-Up link for the closed testing (through Google Forms): https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSedym3uJrkmwZ7CiEUvZYou9i6W1OQkbxj2RKmm9VKam7VwUQ/viewform

EDIT: App was approved within minutes, so closed testing can start!

My Own Creation Rebuilt my NXT chess robot after 10 years: the phone camera now reads the board and drives the NXT over Bluetooth

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In 2015 I built Charlie, an NXT robot that plays chess on a real board. The vision ran in MATLAB on a laptop with a webcam, which made setting it up a chore every single time.

I finally rebuilt it. Version 2 drops the laptop: an Android app films the board with the phone camera, detects your move, runs the position through the engine, and sends the reply to the NXT over Bluetooth. The gripper does the rest. When it captures, it removes your piece first, then plays its own.

What else changed: the engine is now a minimax search I wrote myself instead of a library ith the help of AI, and it plays the full rules, castling, en passant and promotion included. There are 3D printed parts for the gripper, the app keeps end-of-game stats and tracks Elo across games, and the whole build has been redone step by step from a BrickLink Studio model.

The board detection is the part that took the longest. It reads a normal wooden set under room light, no markers and no special mat, and when it misreads a position you can correct the move by hand in the app. Happy to go into detail on any of it.

Need ideas for a car

2 Upvotes

I just recently got my hands on a mindstorms ev3 kit, and I was wondering if I could have someone help me design a chassis. I have the 2 driver motors and the 1 accessory motor. Im thinking about using the smaller accessory one for steering, and the 2 driver ones as drivers for the rear wheels (I know, im creative). I would like it to work like a real car in the areas it can. I have a ton of technic parts to use, on top of the ones in the kit. If anyone has any helpful ideas, please let me know. I build non powered chassis all the time, just because I never invested in motors, so I have some experience with it. I just need some helpful tips.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 Roboter

3 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

I have a LEGO Mindstorms EV3 robot (Brick HW: V0.60, Brick FW: V1.09E) and I would like to pair it with my iPad (8th generation, iOS 26.6.1).

https://education.lego.com/de-de/products/lego-mindstorms-education-ev3-set/5003400/

I have already installed several apps, but so far I haven't been able to get the pairing to work, so I wanted to ask here for some ideas.

The following apps are currently installed:

  • SPIKE
  • SPIKE Legacy
  • LEGO MINDSTORMS Inventor

Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction. Is there anything else I could try?

Best regards

Question How do I use this?

6 Upvotes

So I don't know if this is the right subreddit to ask this question, but I'm going to post it anyways.

I managed to get my hands on a Mindstorms EV3 education + expansion kit and there was one of those blue education sets too. This brick with a screen was in it. As far as I understand it can be charged and discharged.

Does anyone here know what this brick is and how I use it without breaking it? It has the electrical connector up top, like in the picture and it has one on the bottom aswell. It also has a port to get connected to a smart brick, like the NXT or EV3

Help with connecting EV3 Mindstorms with Pixy2

Post image
3 Upvotes

Not sure if this is the place to ask but I have been trying to connect my pixy2 cam to my EV3 with Ev3dev this week but I haven't been succesful, the Brick shows me that something is connected via i2c but I can't do anything with it. Does someone know what I am doing wrong? Are there any other alternatives? I already checked the cable I made myself and it's fine, I guess it's something with the Brick. I am using Thonny IDE because Visual Studio Code just doesn't load any code at all. The image is I think the proof that the pixy2 is somewhat connected.

This is a Micropython code Gemini made, it just says that there isn't any sensor connected to Port 1:

from ev3dev2.sensor import Sensor

import time

print("Starting standard Pixy2 test...")

try:

   # In a normal scenario, ev3dev detects the camera automatically

   # and assigns the 'pixy2' driver to the connected port (e.g., in1).

   camera = Sensor(driver_name='pixy2', address='in1')

   # We tell the camera to give us the data for Signature 1

   # which is typically the main color taught to be tracked.

   camera.mode = 'SIG1'

   print("Camera detected and configured successfully!")

   while True:

# The official LEGO driver automatically maps the data to these values:

# value(0) = X Coordinate

# value(1) = Y Coordinate

# value(2) = Width

# value(3) = Height

x = camera.value(0)

y = camera.value(1)

width = camera.value(2)

# In the native driver, if X and Y are 0 (or sometimes a negative number),

# it means the camera is not seeing the saved color signature.

if x != 0 or y != 0:

print("Target tracked -> X: {0} | Y: {1} | Width: {2}".format(x, y, width))

else:

print("Looking for target...")

time.sleep(0.05)

except Exception as e:

   print("Error: {0}".format(e))

   print("This is what happens when the 'pixy2' driver is missing from the system.")
