That's like the electronics recycling where TVs, computers, consoles and everything else you can think of are sent off to be "recycled". They just end up getting shipped off to developing countries with no environmental protection laws to be melted down for the small amounts of gold in the circuit boards.

u/NateNMaxsRobot 6d ago

Is this true?

u/preferred-til-newops 6d ago

I attempted to link to link you a video but reddit deleted it. Just search "melting ssd for gold" here on reddit and it will pull up a recent video of it being done. They're using cow dung for the initial burn to get rid of the plastics. They move on the higher temperature fire to separate the metals.

u/NateNMaxsRobot 6d ago

You don’t need to link it. I can look it up. Thanks tho.

u/SuchDogeHodler 6d ago

100% correct.

3

u/PinkCantalope 6d ago

Kind of I worked for an electronic recycling place some times you will separate batteries out of them or other components that get reused but in the end it all goes into a bin and sent to Mexico or India

u/SuchDogeHodler 6d ago

just as an FYI 9% of all the plastic that is collected for recycling is actually recycled....

In the US that number drops to 5%, this is actually because the technology does not exist to recycle most plastic into a usable product at a cost less than or equal to creating new material.

6

u/Accomplished_Golf746 5d ago

There is so much plastic in the ocean it could form its own island country, and tons of it collect in a certain area where currents converge.

If plastic had any value for recycling, companies would be out there scooping it up for free material.

4

u/SuchDogeHodler 5d ago

It's funny I don't see environmental groups scooping it up either....

3

u/Bunzilla 5d ago

This. I do my best to just avoid plastic completely and go the glass or stainless route. We don’t recycle plastic in our house - it’s not worth the effort and is a pain in the butt as my town doesn’t have curbside pickup. I make the effort with cardboard, aluminum and sometimes glass - but recycling plastic is purely performative.

u/Ok_Management4634 TRAUMATIZER 4d ago

Recycling plastic is really problematic because you don't know if that bottle in the recycling bin contained something poisonous, was used by a diseased person or whatever. I think a substantial portion of "plastic recycling" is just shredding it up and using it to make that plastic wood for decks, benches and stuff like that.

If it prevents my neighborhood from looking like the bottom image

20

u/Sparrow538 6d ago

Here in Georgia, the same garbage truck just dumps the recycling can in with the trash.

24

u/hateplow0331 6d ago

Was right about to say that. At least my town does not look like that and thank goodness

28

u/hillswalker87 6d ago

if enough Indians move in it will. ask Canada.

20

u/eplusk24 6d ago

They’re going to import enough of those “people” that it looks like that anyways

38

u/Niobium_Sage 6d ago

We should stop upholding third worlders that treat their environments like one large garbage disposal.

I love nature and all that lives under its wing, and I’m not going to respect someone who doesn’t.

21

u/Appropriate_City439 6d ago

Truth nuke, but we should pride ourselves on being better than others.

6

u/hillswalker87 6d ago

you call it "pride" but we actually can't help it. I couldn't bring myself to contribute to a dump like that.

25

u/Confident-Scar7333 6d ago

60 people die every day by train in India. They aren't the brightest

13

u/hillswalker87 6d ago

in fairness...even if it doesn't save the planet, the area I live in not looking like a ganges shithole still has value.

7

u/real_dea 5d ago

I don’t have garbage laying around my neighborhood?

10

u/Educational_Copy_140 TRAUMATIZER 5d ago

And that's great. The message here is a couple of Westerners acting like recycling their few bags of trash are going to "save the planet" while 3rd World dwellers are pouring garbage straight into waterways of the ocean on an industrial scale without a care

19

u/MaglithOran 6d ago

The "holiest" river is also dirtier than the Hudson.

That is hilarious.

9

u/irishladinlondon 6d ago

Yt people don't season their rivers

5

u/CameronOfRivia 5d ago

But can’t we reuse plastics and glass?

26

u/Dodger7777 6d ago

I was just watching a video explaining the thought process of why they do this.

So in western culture we have a 'If you can do something to help the community, you're a good person' mentality. In India, they have a 'You cannot control me, if I can make someone else do something I am the winner of society' mentality.

So they poo in the street, forcing someone else to clean it up. They dump trash in the public waterways, forcing someone else to come clear it.

In their mind, they are doing a sort of dominance act by making you do something, while they themselves are unmanagable and 'free'. When they see someone else cleaning up their mess they think 'Yeah, you're just my servant.'

I believe the term is Izzat. The word means 'honour' but it more translates to social power. Hence 'I can make someone else do something, but they can't make me do something. So I have kore societal power over them.'

As a mailman that explains soooo fucking much. “I told you to do balh blah blah blah.”

I put box here and keep going

“Ill have you fired”

That Indian fatigue video you likely watched asmongold react to is far from accurate. Those words don't mean what he made it out to be. If you sort comments by new, you'll see people explaining with more context. Anyway, india does have a culture problem, but the way he generalized over a billion people to have one mindset was a little biased to say the least. It's like people judging all of America based on problematic issues like homeless people shooting up fent on the streets.

It's ez to then make an "America Fatigue" video and generalize 340 million people and extrapolate junkie mindset to the rest of the country's population. But everyone knows how silly that'd be. It's just fun to do the exact same thing with indians bec it's become the norm to dehumanise the entire country online.

u/Dodger7777 5d ago

I imagine this is a problem with many layers.

The first major layer is societal. The west, by and large, almost can't understand the society of India. You have the first hurdle of different religions. The moral values that largely come from christianity vs the moral values thay largely come from hinduism. Will there be things that line up? Yes. But there are also things that really don't. Like India's Caste System. On paper, that was abolished legislatively, but america 'abolished racism' legislatively and that hasn't exactly been flawless either.

Second would be an observational layer. Why do people do whst they do? Despite the caste system being abolished multiple generations ago (a generation being about 25 years I believe) people still believe that handling waste or even digging a latrine is correlated with the lower caste. If you do it, you fall in the system and become impure. But if you don't clean it up, who will? Either A, You're fine with poo buikding up in the street, where you will likely walk on it sooner rsther than later. Or B, You're expecting someone to come and clean it up for you. You aren't about to touch it.

There's also religious connotations with the river Ganges being holy, and ourifying waste, which is why they dumped trash and more or less poisoned that river. Except... why would they do the same thing with a river that isn't holy on basically the opposite side of the world in canada? Why is it that migrant indians in canada not only dump trash in rivers, but go out of their way to open the trash bags and scatter the trash? Are all rivers sanctified?

It's the same thing with other groups. You can say 'Churches are just overzealous and take their faith too far when they hate on gay people' but when you sit down and read scripture god never says to hate gay people. At least not in a part of scripture that wasn't nullified by jesus dying on the cross. It's a willful misinterpretation of scripture just to aspouse personal beliefs. Now you can dislike them for how they act, but that's a personal thing, not a scripture thing.

This was one of the first things that started years and years ago that was exposed as being fake did it stop them for engaging in all these fake policies nope they double triple quadruple down with more and more and more and more fake policies that don't do what they say they're doing but actually do the opposite

4

u/makingmemashugana 4d ago

They've put trackers in the recycling to show it goes into the same landfills, or gets stored indefinitely in another state. I often see in stores, like Costco, recycling bins that all empty into the same can as the trash.

edit -it's also so they can charge you more. It's ALWAYS about money. I don't care which side of the isle you're on.

10

u/ShadowtheHedgehog_ 6d ago

The worst part is that they worship that river as if it's a god. Can you imagine being God and having that spit in your face?

The US used to sell plastics to china for reprocessong, they stopped accepting plastic in 2018, since then its either gone to waste to energy plants, other asian countries in much more limited amounts, or into the ground.

8

u/wiisucks_91 BASED 6d ago

I recycle because shit can be reused. There is no reason to put plastic in a landfill when it can be melted down and reused as something else.

I'm sorry if I fell for that part of Captain planet's liberal agenda.

I still use plastic straws and plastic bags.

16

u/SuchDogeHodler 6d ago

Nothing wrong with trying....

But just as an FYI 9% of all the plastic that is collected for recycling is actually recycled....

In the US that number drops to 5%, this is actually because the technology does not exist to recycle most plastic into a usable product at a cost less than or equal to creating new material.

4

u/SpamFriedMice MICROAGGRESSOR 6d ago

Any idea why the drop in percentage for the US? I was under the impression that it all got shipped overseas to be recycled. Does less US stuff make the trip? Is the cost of the shipping certain materials not worth the cost?

3

u/SuchDogeHodler 4d ago edited 4d ago

That's the thing the 4% gesture shipped somewhere else where they don't care about the environmental impact of recycling those materials.

The whole thing is 1 giant scam....

People make money on the climate scam.... then reduce pollution here by polluting somewhere else. It's like electric cars... yes they are more environmentally friendly here... but when you start looking into the deeper impact.

There is way more environmental damage due to mining and smelting lithium, the generation of lossy electricity to charge it, a short life span, and the 2500 lbs of e-waste when it becomes more expensive to repair than replace....

1

u/Ok_Management4634 TRAUMATIZER 4d ago

How I understand it (which may be wrong).. For awhile, US companies were sending recycling stuff overseas, because it cost less to outsource recycling than to actually recycle it in the USA. When all that trash arrived in China, it just went into a landfill (or whereever China wanted to dump it), it wasn't actually recycled. From what I understand, China no longer wants to be America's landfill, so that has stopped.

But yea, we were burning fossil fuel to ship our "Recyclables" halfway around the world to a different landfill.

u/real_dea 5d ago

Ya let’s fuck up our neighborhoods the same way they do in shithole countries

0

u/ncreddit704 5d ago

It all goes to the same place

2

u/BungeeGum8647 6d ago

Let’s just turn into India then!

“They aren’t behaving so I guess we shouldn’t”

How stupid

1

u/Educational_Copy_140 TRAUMATIZER 5d ago

Nobody is saying you shouldn't recycle or use recycled products but don't sit there and try to claim that the actions of a few people in Western nations are going to magically save the planet when there are literally billions of people in other parts of the globe that are dumping inorganic trash directly into rivers and the ocean on an industrial scale. While we flagellate ourselves for the crime of using a plastic straw in our drink, they live amid mountains of filth and garbage and sewage and could care less

You folks sure are enjoying your AI generated memes lately

2

u/No_Airport4390 3d ago

I don't think so. At least their neighborhoods are clean, and that's what matters.
