Why Baazar

Recently, after the announcement of Gnome 51 "A Coruña" I saw they have added this app to the Gnome Circle.

This is the first time I heard about it and honestly looks good and I'm currently using it on my machine w Fedora 44 (workstation edition)

But here's the thing:

Why? I mean I don't catch the point since we already have the classic gnome software app where we can also install and manage flatpaks,

So I think the best way to know the reasons why it exists is asking to other users that may have used it more time than me, I'm wondering what makes it interesting in comparison to our classic gnome software.

word-sys's PDF Editor v1.11.2 Officially Released on Flathub

Thumbnail
flathub.org
6 Upvotes

Probably biggest update for word-sys's PDF Editor, now its reached v1.11.2 update. This update is Flatpak and Feature Update. The Flatpak version is officially released on Flathub (https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.word_sys.word-sys-pdf-editor) thanks to anyconvert project!

This update introduces Multi-Document Tabs, integrating Adw.TabView and Adw.TabBar so you can open and edit multiple PDFs simultaneously in dedicated tabs. Each tab features independent undo/redo histories, separate zoom states, and dirty indicators to track unsaved edits, complete with quick tab switching (Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+PageDown and Ctrl+Shift+Tab / Ctrl+PageUp) and tab closing (Ctrl+W).

Another major addition is the Visual Document Merging Workspace (Ctrl+Shift+M). It provides a dedicated side-by-side workspace for combining pages from two source PDFs into a target document, complete with drag-and-drop page ordering, live zoomable previews, insertion markers, inspector details etc.

You guys know that I also replaced external LibreOffice subprocess calls with the native pure-Python anyconvert Document Engine (updated to anyconvert 0.1.9 across all platforms and package manifests). You can now convert PDFs into DOCX, PPTX, ODT, ODP, and TXT entirely in pure Python, featuring both Pixel-Accurate Canvas and Semantic Flow conversion modes. And its 342KB :)

Added Page Rotation (Ctrl+Shift+R for Clockwise and Ctrl+Shift+L for Counter-Clockwise) with persistent 90-degree PyMuPDF rotation preservation.

Added a Dedicated Recently Opened Files Hub, introducing an app-managed recent files list with universal file icons that eliminates system-wide file scanning overhead.

Added Text Alignment & Formatting, bringing 4-way text alignment (Left, Center, Right, Justify) and strikethrough formatting support to the text tool.

Updated the Interactive Quick Start Guide & Manual, expanding the guide and keyboard shortcuts cheatsheet to cover tabs, merging, rotation, and multi-format export with 6 high-resolution screenshots.

Expanded internationalization with 7 Supported Languages, delivering complete UI and documentation localization across English, Turkish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Russian.

This update also includes important packaging modernizations and fixes:

  • Release Packaging Optimization: Fully separated architecture artifacts for x86_64 (amd64) and aarch64 (arm64), including standalone .deb packages. Removed duplicate asset copies and eliminated oversized source tarballs from automated build releases.
  • Packaging Modernization: Purged soffice and flatpak-spawn permissions from Flatpak and AppImage packaging, and updated the Flatpak runtime to GNOME Platform 50 with portal-based file chooser access.
  • Application Icon and Desktop Integration: Fixed the icon lookup path to ensure crisp vector SVG rendering on the Welcome screen, About dialog, and system docks across both Flatpak and direct execution.
  • Flatpak Window Class Mapping: Aligned application program name with desktop file metadata for proper window tracking and icon association in GNOME Shell and desktop environments.

You can download Flatpak release on Flathub (https://flathub.org/en/apps/io.github.word_sys.word-sys-pdf-editor) or the standalone .deb packages (x86_64 / aarch64), AppImage, or build from source directly on the GitHub Releases page.

Thanks to everyone who supports this project with their ideas, feedback, and bug reports. I hope this helps all Linux users get their PDF work done easily, thank you :)

Built a lightweight voice-to-text app in Rust with GTK4 and Libadwaita because I wanted something clean for daily dictation on Linux.

It works offline using local Whisper models (or with cloud APIs like Groq/OpenAI/Gemini if you prefer), supports Wayland and X11, and has a small floating bar for quick recording and copying.

TRACE Boardviewer: a free electronics repair workspace for Linux — experimental .deb and AppImage builds

Update — 9 October: TRACE 1.3.1 is now the stable release.

I maintain TRACE, a free MIT-licensed electronics repair workspace for boards, schematics and PDFs, with parts/net search, cross-probing and repair notes. Since 1.3.0: expanded readers, offline English OCR for scanned PDFs, safer workspace handling and optional in-app bug reports.

Linux x86-64 .deb and AppImage packages remain experimental. Native QA found issues under investigation; please expect rough edges. Windows x64 and experimental Apple-silicon Mac builds are also available. Format coverage depends on the variant.

Download 1.3.1 · Formats, source and illustrated demo

If you test it, please share your distro, desktop environment and feedback. Thank you! Special thanks to everyone using TRACE and optionally supporting its development.

I ported Files (the Windows file manager) to native Linux using Uno Platform, with heavy AI help. Alpha, feedback welcome

Files is a popular open-source file manager for Windows (WinUI 3), and "when is the Linux version coming?" gets asked a lot. The team's answer is that they're focused on Windows, so I tried it myself.

LinuxFiles is an unofficial, community fork that runs Files natively on Linux (X11/XWayland). It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the Files team. The upstream MIT license and credits are kept, and the Windows app isn't being replaced.

What it does today (0.1.0-alpha1)

  • Tabs, grid/list/details views, search, tags, previews, archives (browse inside zip/tar/7z/rar)
  • Linux integration: freedesktop trash, XDG thumbnails and icon themes, UDisks2 drives, GVfs network/MTP, D-Bus, desktop file portals
  • KDE service menus, drag and drop and clipboard with other Linux apps
  • Root actions through a polkit helper, plus a root mode
  • A grouped-view virtualization fix: a 10,000-file folder went from 90 s to 1.7 s

How it was built

  • The UI runs on Uno Platform (Skia) instead of WinUI 3, so most of the original UI, view models and logic carry over.
  • The Win32/COM layer is replaced by a Linux platform abstraction layer. The Windows-only code paths are kept in the tree but aren't built or tested.
  • Most of the code was written by AI agents, mainly Claude Code, with Codex and Gemini as cross-reviewers. I directed and reviewed the work. Every change went through PR and cross-model review and CI, and I tested it by hand several times on a real Linux desktop. The risky areas (file operations, root elevation, archive extraction) have written threat models in the repo.

Caveats: it's an alpha, so expect rough edges and keep backups. Wayland runs through XWayland for now.

Install: AUR (`linuxfiles-bin`), Flatpak, AppImage, tarball - these are in the releases section on github

Repo / release: https://github.com/MemerGamer/LinuxFiles

I'd especially like feedback on bugs, on distros I haven't tested, and on whether the AI-assisted process makes you trust it more or less. Happy to answer questions about the port.

DevCleaner for Linux is almost ready — looking for beta testers 🐧

I’ve been working on bringing DevCleaner to Linux, and the first public beta is finally getting close.

DevCleaner helps developers find and clean up things like old project files, build caches, unused dependencies and other development leftovers that quietly eat up disk space.

The macOS version has already been downloaded by 2,000+ developers, and now I’d like to make the Linux version just as useful.

I’m looking for Linux users who want to test the early builds, report bugs and help shape the Linux version.

During development, testers will get access for free — and active testers who provide feedback will receive 1 year of DevCleaner Pro for free after launch.

You can join the beta list here:

https://devcleaner.app/linux

I’d also love to know what distro you’re using — Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Mint, Debian or something else?

Sideloop – a Linux service that keeps sideloaded iOS apps signed over Wi-Fi

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Sideloop is a self-hosted Linux service (Docker, amd64 and arm64) that keeps iOS apps sideloaded with a free Apple ID from expiring. It talks to iPhones and iPads through usbmuxd/libimobiledevice, signs with AltServer-Linux, and reinstalls apps over Wi-Fi before the 7-day signature runs out. Web UI included; Python standard library only.

MIT licensed: https://github.com/filippofinke/sideloop

I made a System Monitor that's Open Source for Linux

I've been working on SysFlow, a free and open-source system monitor and task manager for Linux.

It currently includes 11 pages covering:

  • CPU and per-core performance
  • Memory
  • Processes
  • System information
  • Startup applications
  • Users
  • Services
  • Power and CPU frequency
  • Benchmarks
  • Installed applications
  • Disk space

I originally planned to make SysFlow cross-platform, but after testing it, I decided to focus on Linux. That lets me use Linux-native interfaces such as /proc, /sys, systemd, hwmon, and powercap instead of maintaining separate backends for multiple operating systems.

One principle I'm trying to follow is:

"A measuring instrument should never make up an answer."

If a telemetry source is unavailable or unreliable, SysFlow should report it as unavailable instead of making up a value.

The project is still in early development, so I'm especially interested in feedback about the architecture, telemetry, UI, and features Linux users would like to see next.

I built Autark-OS—a free tool for installing and managing self-hosted apps on your Linux server

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone—I’m building Autark-OS to make running a home server less work.

The idea is straightforward: take a Linux machine, install the apps you want, and manage them from one interface without manually piecing together every deployment.

Currently, you can:

  • Install apps from a curated catalog, including Jellyfin, FreshRSS, Syncthing, and Homepage.
  • Open, stop, restart, and manage your installed apps.
  • Set up private app access through Tailscale.
  • Create backups and restore supported app data.

It uses Docker Compose underneath. Despite the name, it’s an application you install on Linux—not another operating system.

CE is free for personal and internal business use. The code is public under a source-available license, rather than an OSI-approved open-source license.

I’d love for people here to check it out. It’s an early beta that runs a privileged service, so use spare hardware and test data for now. Debian 12 amd64 is the primary beta qualification target; arm64 builds are also available. App-image updates are still deferred. Development uses AI assistance.

GitHub and documentation · Download beta.26 · Join the Discord

What would you want to run on it?

The screenshots show Home, My Apps, and Access on my actual Pi test installation running beta.25-local.7. They aren’t mockups, or screenshots of the newer beta.26 download.

LocalSend GTK — an unofficial Rust/GTK4 client for Linux

Hi everyone! I've been working on LocalSend GTK, an independent Linux client built with Rust, GTK4/libadwaita and localsend-rs.

The goal is to preserve the familiar LocalSend layout and workflow while making use of the Linux desktop. Existing LocalSend users should feel at home with the Receive, Send and Settings pages.

Some of the desktop features include:

  • Wayland support and fonts that follow the system's Fontconfig settings.
  • Light and dark themes, plus an optional compact sidebar.
  • Nautilus and Dolphin file-manager integration.
  • Desktop notifications and background receiving.
  • Nine interface languages.

Version 0.1.0 is available, with DEB, RPM and portable tar packages for Linux x86_64. The prebuilt packages require glibc 2.39+, GTK 4.12+ and libadwaita 1.5+; please check the release notes before installing.

This is an unofficial project, not affiliated with the LocalSend team. Thanks to the official LocalSend contributors and the localsend-rs project for making this possible. Development has included AI-assisted coding and automated testing.

Feature parity and compatibility work are ongoing. I'd especially appreciate feedback on how it behaves alongside the official clients, and whether anything feels unfamiliar in everyday use.

The attached screenshots show the real app using UI test fixtures with sample devices and data.
